Optical clarity generally refers to the view looking out. I means that you will detect little to no distortion while looking through the film. To answer the question regarding darkness, it depends on the shade chosen. The darker the film the more of an adjustment it will be looking out depending on the time of day. The dark look from the outside looking in is an illusion depending on the light, glass shape and color of the interior of the vehicle.
