I bet he could land shorter just landing it . It will fly slower then when the wheels are in water! None the less this is good flying from a decent pilot! Great job!

I am the pilot in these video. 1) You lose the bet. I have 4000+ landings in SuperCub. There's no chance of doing it slower from the air than a water-assisted landing; 2) You are wrong by a long shot. The tires on the water allows you to arrive on the shore substantially below stall speed. This technique is not for show - it provides a way of doing something you couldn't do otherwise.

@@MarkAJaegerVideo on the video it looks like you are coming in pretty fast then i read the comment. The only time we used the water was ther was no other room. In alaska the water is usually glacial and you never know the bottom. Awesome job, i dont fly but my father did he had over 24000hr in a j3 , pa11, and super cub! So all i can say is great job! We never drove on the water like you did at least not with me in the plane ! But we have used the water for extra room on approach . Thanks for the reply !

what's the point? they're not landing any shorter than a correctly flown stol approach, but are adding a whole lot of risk

I just started doing this in my plane. The tricky part is figuring out when to start pulling off the throttle when approaching the shore. The timing is critical so penetration happens just short of hitting dry land. Too soon and your upside down.

What factors do you use when judging these landings? Presumably sipped is crucial but also point of contact with the water. Can you hold on the power if you get too slow on the water?

Hey Guys I was landing on the Water 35 years ago even with the old 29 inch tires worked good >> but the 31 Airstreaks works better >> but a good cub rigged properly is the key >>> and also taking off water can add needed room for take off >>

Do you need to brake the tires for this or do they just roll on the water?

Hello; I was just wondering if you were able to do frequent beach landings while exploring wilderness areas. What a great way to travel to remote locations. I’m no pilot, but it just seems that landing a light aircraft on a water concealed surface might risk encountering a hidden rut or two. But you pulled it off beautifully. Were you able to do this in a variety of beach areas?

I use this technique sparingly because, while you can land short you still must be able to takeoff. It is best suited to dropping off heavy gear and then taking off light. The water is unlikely to have obstacles. Careful pre-landing observation from the air is vital. I have used the water-assisted technique many times in many places.

9 times out of 10 you can stop MUCH shorter if you dont use the water and touch down right on the edge . The water makes the brakes slick and reduces the friction by almost half . Braking with dry brakes will always be much faster than water assisted . FACTS !
@MarkAJaegerVideo
@MarkAJaegerVideo 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you are speaking from armchair theory or actual practice but your concern about dry brakes misses more important considerations. When you arrive by air you are at flying speed. This is is somewhere in the 38-42 mph range in a light SuperCub with VG's. Maybe you can get to 36-37 but the Cub is all-done in the flying department. On the water, with the support given by skiing the tires you can arrive at the shoreline in the very low 30's. The kinetic energy at 30 vs 40 is almost half. Obviously kinetic energy is very important to stopping distance. Then there's the point in the landing where you go to idle power and raise the flaps. On the water the power can be cut 1-2 lengths before the shoreline. Same with the flaps if you're quick with the handle. This is not possible if you're arriving on the dry side from the air. Thus, the effective runway is longer starting on the water. If you are arriving by air at 40mph, you're moving at ~60 fps. It only takes missing the "spot" by 1-2 seconds to use more runway than a completed landing from the water. When you arrive on land from the water the brakes may have some spray but they are not soaked. The tundra tires are fat and divert water outward not inward. At 30 mph with low pressure in the tundra tires, wet or dry brakes gets the job done. I challenge you: Go out and try a water-assisted arrival and see how much land it requires. Then put a mark at that point and repeat the process from the air. I would expect you to run over the mark every time. BTW: putting FACTS in all caps doesn't make your point any more persuasive.

so can a plane hydroplane slower than its normal stall speed?
@MarkAJaegerVideo
@MarkAJaegerVideo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. My Supercub, when Mr Piper built it, had a 42 mph rated stall. With VG's (wing vortex generators) this could go down to 38-39 mph. With skiing you can arrive at the waters edge somewhere in the 32 mph neighborhood.
@lucywucyyy
@lucywucyyy 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarkAJaegerVideo cool, funnily enough tho kevin quin told me the opposite, is it dangerous to go below the planes stall speed?
@MarkAJaegerVideo
@MarkAJaegerVideo 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucywucyyy Not dangerous if you're "held up" by the skiing. Go back to the video - the last shot - here I purposely allowed the speed to go below the support speed. It splashed pretty big but I knew the water depth and it was not enough to cause a crash. Basically, I wanted to find out where the edge of the envelope was. This is pretty "sporty" as there is genuine risk.

@@MarkAJaegerVideo nice, thanks for explaining, im trying to figure out the physics of the whole maneuver, im familiar with loads of other bush flying techniques from messing around in fight sims but sadly threres no sim out there currently that simulates waterskiing
@MarkAJaegerVideo
@MarkAJaegerVideo 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucywucyyy When it comes to real "slow flight" a sim won't teach you how. You need to start at pretty slow and then go slower and slower - cautiously. This is hundreds or thousands of landings (seriously !!). All the while the airplane is talking to you. You need to learn it's language with all the nuances. If you don't perceive what it is telling you a problem is near. A sim won't communicate in the same way as a real airplane (IMO) but I've only flown a 747 sim for a few hours. I did get the Hong Kong "Kai Tak" landing done without splashing in the bay!

It makes Zero sense to climb a mountain, same with sky diving, or any sport for that matter. It's for the challenge Ray. Its another tool, a skill that when practiced and honed can be used to get into more remote and smaller places. Just like for building any skill. A fighter doesn't go into the ring with a champion. A mountain climber does not practice his skill on Everest. Same for the bush pilot. He practices the easy places to build his skill, and that is 80% of the fun.And Ray. If that still doesn't make sense to you, you're watching the wrong videos.

mark you know the manufacture does not recommend any kind of water assists landings? in fact you posting materials that could kill dumb pilots?
@MarkAJaegerVideo
@MarkAJaegerVideo 2 жыл бұрын
I think you're imagining things - Piper (the 'manufacturer' - not 'manufacture') has no recommendations about bush-flying techniques. All of bush flying is done under the premise that it is done within the capability of the airplane and its pilot. Showing a pilot using an airplane competently is not an invitation to every yahoo to go out and duplicate the technique. The movies, the internet and television all show highly skilled people doing amazing things that would easily hurt the unskilled or stupid. It's not just aviation that has danger. For example, you could run toward a vaulting horse, like Simone Biles, and try to do a double back flip with double twist but you'd be very likely to end up in a pile on the floor needing medical attention.
