Hey everyone - lot of you digging this lesson :) Thanks! But did you know I just released an updated and improved super HD version of this course - and it's still free :) Just go to www.justinguitar.com/begin - as well as the lessons, I learned to play left handed using my own course, and filmed my journey, so you can watch me struggle along with you! I really hope it's the best beginner guitar course that's ever been made, and it's free (but I do appreciate donations if you enjoy it and can afford to!). Go check it out, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

To everyone that is just starting to learn now, I just wanted to tell you to keep trying and trying to practice everyday, And DO NOT to give up. This was my first KZfaq video I watched when I got my first guitar around 8 months ago. I can now say that I can play like 30 different chords and a whole bunch of songs. It all just takes time and a little bit of effort. At first I know your fingers will hurt and that is completely normal. I know that you just want to give up and never touch your guitar ever again. But please don't give up. You will get better, I promise you. It is 8 months later going through the same struggle when I am learning how to solo, And learning to play the solo in "One" by Metallica. Playing Guitar is now my favorite thing to do, And has completely changed my life. I just recently joined a band with a few dudes I know lol... But at this point I'm just babbling. And again please do not give up. You will get better and WILL thank me in the long run.

Keep going! I loved music through my whole childhood but we didn't have enough money for instruments. When I turned 8 my parents finally could afford an old second-hand guitar. I loved that thing, but it hurt too much and I think I was too young, after 2 years I gave it up, have regretted it ever since. 10 years later, I'm trying to learn again, but it gets harder with age! It used to come to me so naturally and I'll never have that again.

For those concerned about finger pain: when I first began guitar, my fingers hurt a little. But not much. The trick, atleast for me, was to practice -- (without pressing down on the strings overly much) -- until my fingers began to hurt. This would be about fifteen or twenty minutes. Then practice the next day for the same about the same time. Some days they hurt a little more than others, but nothing like what I'm reading in the comments. It really doesn't take all that long to build up calluses - about 1.5 to 2 weeks. After that, it takes a lot of playing to get, "Blisters on me fingers!"

In what way? The fingers struggle bad to get into this unnatural position and the E string is near impossible not to mute even after 10 days. I know YT 'instructors' never want to hear about someone having fat fingers, but when that is truly the case, what's the solution?

Reacting to this about 2 years later of my on and off guitar learning, learning consistently has been a pain with pandemic (couldn't get strings for months!), thesis work, moving to a new country and all. I have probably played only 1 year of those 2 years! However, my playing has improved miles and I can kinda play the stuff I want to play now! And it's all thanks to Justin! Keep the faith and keep learning! Also I honestly find this old beginner's course a way better fit for me than the new one! I don't really follow Justin anymore now that I am trying to develop my own stuff and get better at the stuff I personally want to play on guitar! But it was a terrific journey and I can't thank you enough Justin for teaching me guitar.

oh my gosh I remember this was the first chord I learned and definitely the hardest for me, but I did get it after a week and have no trouble with it at all so don't give up! It just takes your hand and fingers getting used to it is all:)

my first was A. Then I learned a bunch of others and after 3 days I can play a lot of the ones I learned without thinking about it. But this D chord is making me so mad, I just can't get it, I find myself playing a Dsus4 most of the time, just because I can't play the D Major.

Guys something that helped me (because my hands are too small) is that since I couldn't stretch my finger far enough, I use my pinky finger instead of my ring finger. It may make switching chords a bit harder but at least you can play the note.

I recently started playing guitar to challenge myself and the d cord has really held me back When you mentioned about putting the thumb behind the fret board and not on top it blew my mind Instantly i could set my fingers right for the D chord without my 3rd finger slipping towards the others and improved the other chords too , its mad how even the thumb posistion makes the difference

Bought a Guitar a couple days ago. The Yamaha F800. Glad to have discovered JustinGuitar! My fingers hurt, my muscle memory for my fingers definitely are not developed yet. Strumming is difficult, I mess up consistently on strumming. I'm using a pick, it slides out of my fingers, but after a few days I've gotten better at keeping it in my hand. Looking forward to the day I can play guitar comfortably! Thank you JustinGuitar for this free content, this is an amazing generosity to all us who are wanting to learn. An incredible resource! Good luck all you beginners! I am determined to learn, and it's more than just a feeling, it's a choice I have made. Through better and through worse haha :] God bless, Jesus Christ loves you.

As long as you make that a big deal it is unlikely you gonna surprise yourself by playing it clean. And whatever anyway, you can still sing. You should be rather enjoying playing and singing and not focus on such thing. You just blocking yourself this way. It's a normal thing and soon it gonna be hard to block that string.
