Thanks for sharing this video, I remember watching it as a kid and admiring everything, can't believe that I actually work at Caterpillar now but on the digital products, not the actual machines. Mad respect to everyone that works with the machines, these are really jobs like no other!

Thanks for the upload. I work at the Caterpillar Decatur plant. I'm a welder on the large wheel loader line but get back near the 797 line often. It really is an awesome engineering accomplishment. Great video!

I was a trucker and was in that Decatur plant everyday for about 5 years and hauled most of the parts for the dumps, scrapers and graders. Also hauled monster engine blocks from Mapleton Illinois to Lafayette engine plant. Also took parts of dumps to mines for assembly. Up the side of mountains and all. A on open platform and rolling tarp trailers. It was amazing work.

Not sure when this video was actually recorded, but the twin 3512 (equaling 24 cyl) powerpack set up is No longer used. The newer 797F trucks are powered by the Cat. C175-20 engine that is a single block, Quad-Turbocharged and rated for 4,000hp (conservative)@1,800rpm (max) and yields 6,830ft lbs of torque @ 1,500rpm. It has a bore & stroke of 6.9in X 8.7in x 20 = 6,469ci. However it can be de-rated to 3,550hp for mining operations on flatter terrain. In Marine applications and locomotive conversions, the C175-20 can be rated up to 5,364hp and water-cooled quad-turbocharging as well.... water-cooled turbo's can generate higher boost levels using cold outside water (fresh or sea water). Just a few FYI's for the "gearheads" out there..... The C1750-20 capacities (US) are - Cooling System = 306 gal. - Crankcase Oil = 84.0 gals (Not counting the filters) - Steering System including its tank = 94 gals. - Brake Hoist System including its tank = 441.0 gals. - Torque Converter and Trans. including the sump = 166.0gals - Torque converter sump alone = 80 gals - Differentials = 311.0 gals - Each Front wheel hub = 16 gals - Each Rear wheel final drive = 40 gals. Actual tire size for the current model 797F is 59/80R63. The brake discs are 42in outside diameter and there are 10 discs with Each front wheel and 15 discs at Each rear wheel. The differential ratio is 1.276:1, the Planetary drive ratio is 16.67:1 (Yes! - this is a Mechanical drive, Not diesel/electric like all the other brands out there in this weight class), for a total reduction ratio of 21.26:1 and the top speed (Loaded!) is up to 42 mph on level ground. If anyone is confused with the specs regarding the "Brake Hoist System".... the Brakes are continuous Forced oil cooled using a water to oil heat exchanger and the oil, is sourced from the Hoist oil tank.

This is a great documentary, thanks for posting. The specs of the 797 kept blowing my mind. 4 metre high tyres, each weighing 5 tons. 3,500hp engine with two 500kg crankshafts???? It's an engineering marvel, and a logistical marvel having so many manufacturing and assembly plants all over North America. Caterpillar is truly an awe inspiring company. I'm so glad I watched this.

my dad is a mining engineer and once he let us tour in one of the pits he is working. i heard a sound like a jet airplane coming but to my amazement it's this house size truck that came towards us.

This will be my daily driver when I win the lottery.

Watched one of a bit smaller size roll backwards at the edge of a spoil storage area. It was too close to the edge and when it tipped up to dump, the weight transfer caused it to sink into some loose fill and over it went when the ground slid out from under it. I didn't watch them get it out of the dump area but did see it off to the side of the site a week or so later, with the bed bent all over to one side. Replaced the dump bed and hydraulics and back to work it went. No injuries to the driver.

Nice and strong piece of structural frame to hold all this load. Haven't seen cracks on cat chassis in over 15 years of my experience. Shock to see the bucket pins not lubricated or freeze before fixing. In all great team work.

When i was in diapers my dad went to work for the Duval copper mine in pima county Arizona. He had pictures of the truck he drove. That was in the 70's. Different model, same purpose. It was BETTER than the best military grade tanks of the time.

I haul heavy equipment to job sites and am always amazed by the technology of these earth movers. I haul Superloads on occasion but nothing like this! The pucker factor would be off the chart! Of course when it comes to final assembly,the driver doesn’t have to worry about overpasses. Still,Kudos to all those who make this technology possible!

I had one like that in my sandbox when I was a kid... although a bit smaller ... the other kids slipped in their poop when they saw it.

797 truck started off with 2 engines bolted together, just find that amazing, now it has a single bigger engine.

I work with heavy equipment, granted, NOTHING this big. The biggest things I work on are like 500 excavators, or maybe 50 ton dump trucks. But even they are crazy. Being behind the wheel of one is one of the coolest things. Couldn’t imagine driving one of these.

Customer I work for buys the new D11T2 dozers for this mine, great job, great money, great days off... The change in technology and emission systems at best can be mind boggling especially when a multimillion dollar unit goes down thanks to a $20 pos sensor that looks like a 8 year old kid made it out of chewing gum .

Looks like the frames been sandblasted as well. Painters work hand in hand with sandblasters.

My father in-law is a tire tech at the Kennecott copper mine in Utah and changes these tires all the time. About a year ago a guy had fallen asleep coming down a hill and wrecked the truck. He did between 1 and 2 million dollars worth of damage to the truck.

Weight! When loaded.... is more than 600 tons! That's more than a Boeing 747!!! Maybe because airplanes are designed to fly not carry rocks. That's like saying: My pickup truck, when loaded...weighs more than an ENTIRE ROWBOAT!!!!!

I think you meant 9.6 Ford explorers. That bed is huge, but 96 Ford explorers is a lot different. Maybe if you took all the parts and basically disassembled it down to the screw, 96 Ford explorers would fit?
