13:03 you totally can do Koopa the quick as Yoshi, you don't need to leave the level, cause a little further into the level there's a Goomba with a Mario hat, which you can grab and have Yoshi turn into Mario and then race Koopa the Quick, everyone can race him as long as they're wearing Mario's hat

@@MoonGhostDoodles yeah, and it's even available before you unlock Mario, there is a few levels like that that has a Mario or Luigi or a Wario hat available even tho you not unlocked them yet, for Luigi it's Big Boo's Haunt, for Wario, I think it was the snowy level by the Wario painting, (which can only be entered by Luigi when using the flower) I think if I remember it correctly

In fact the Koopa the Quick level is meant to be THE tutorial for how hats work in the game Maybe they should have increased the other doors to 2 instead of 1 so you had to learn this without just heading off to Whomp's Secret Cool Mountain Slide Fortress

A few little things I like in the DS version is that you can charge your run if you hold the run button for two seconds and then start moving, and doing a dive will save you from fall damage no matter how high you do the dive (diving would not save you in the original).

I first got this game in 2014 on my original blue 3DS. It was my first time experiencing Super Mario 64, and at first, I found its segmented nature to be jarring. But now, I appreciate it much more. I've gotten much better at games. The controls are not as easy as the analog stick, but the different characters and the way they designed levels are very unique, adding a different twist to it. Crazy that 2024 will be the DS's 20th anniversary.

SM64DS was a good title; some negatives would be D-Pad movement and you start out restricted compared to original SM64 which is full freedom. I would love to see a re-release/remaster onto a proper Nintendo console (with a few tweaks of course). Maybe a 3D All Stars 2: SMG2, SM64DS, SM3DL

@@JosuhKid Icarus just uses the pointer controls for the flight segments and camera controls for the land segments for the stylus while you control Pit with the circle pad, and so it could easily be replaced with another analog stick. While I think the flight segments control fine due to being on-rails, the land segments are a large chore due to constantly having to drag the camera around. Not to mention that it gets cumbersome after a while to have to hold the DS with one hand and use the stylus with the other one, which also isn’t friendly to left-handed people at all.

I played 64 in 2020 with Super Mario 3D All Stars but it is a lot smaller but still fun. However, having played 64 DS I do really love the amount of content and I remember asking my cousin how to unlock the power ups by looking at the castle skylight and it blew my MIND because that "Mario takes to the Sky" star had been torturing me for at least months! The DS didn't even enter my radar. I was prepared and waiting for the release of the PSP as well. I went with a group of three other friends to wait in line for the midnight release of the PSP. Turning the PSP on for the first time and seeing that beautiful screen light up, being able to browse the internet, wireless multiplayer and the UMDs were so neat to me. I still play my PSP. Have the same one since launch 2005! We all bought Untold Legends, Twisted Metal and Ridge Racer to start. In highschool we would play over the wireless or ad-hoc wireless worked really long range surprisingly we could play from classrooms across from each other. We had the same study hall, lunch and computer class together as a group. We all did our best to match up our schedules just for the launch of the PSP! Back in 2005 it was pretty cool to watch people's reactions when they saw the browser load up myspace right in class. We were able to get on the schools wifi since they simply didn't bother with security back then lol. It was open at our tiny rural school. Smartphones weren't a thing yet remember so the PSP was like the first smartphone to me basically. I'll never forget when we had a substitute in math and they just gave us a free day so I hooked up the PSP to the tv (it has a component video to 3.5mm output) and we all watched Predator during our class since study hall was in that same room. Our substitute was awesome and loved the movie too. I still remember everyone freaking out when Predator removed his mask for the first time haha. It's pretty cool it was so easy to output to a TV from the PSP! Something the Vita stupidly lacked! Probably because the pstv existed.

I remember at launch, I nicknamed the DS the Game Boy DS. The controls took me some getting used to holding the Y button to run and making use of the 8 way D-pad while occasionally moving my thumb from the face buttons to the touch screen to move the camera or using the L button to center it behind me not unlike how the Z button did with Zelda on the N64. As for the multiplayer aspect having all 4 characters playing on-screen, I believe that was the original plan when we got that teaser trailer showing us all four characters flying around with the wing cap around and above the castle when it was tentatively titled as "Super Mario 64 x 4". The minigames... The majority of them were already available from the get-go in New Super Mario Bros as well, so no bunny-hunting for that at least.

My experience was very similar to Jon. I was in highschool when the GBA came out, and I was a huge fan of my SP. But by the time the DS came along I wasn’t all that interested after seeing pictures and specs of the upcoming PSP which was way ahead of its time imo. It wasn’t until I seen a friend playing Super Mario 64 DS around ‘07 that I became interested, and eventually picked up a white DS lite for myself and my girlfriend at the time, along with the Wi-Fi cart and an R4 card. If I had to be honest, I enjoyed the mini games more than the actual game and swinging Bowser by the tail was a huge PITA with the d-pad.

As a fun fact, the Mario model in DS is actually lower-poly than its counterpart. The 3D art direction had just had time to mature in the ensuing years. Another fun fact that isn't as related to the video, in Mario Kart DS's balloon battle mode you can blow up your reserve balloons by blowing into the microphone...or by *_holding the Select button!_* The latter was never mentioned, iirc!

I think a lot of people that complain about the controls with the D-Pad just cannot separate the originals to this remake. SM64DS is NOT intended to play the same, the physics aren't really the same, just look at Mario jumping in the Castle Gardens. These controls are completely serviceable and in other aspects better, like the Camera. Sure, you can't do cool speedrunner stuff but trust me, nobody who isn't a speedrunner ain't doing that. When people mention how in the original "you could jump around at your heart's content and find your own shortcuts" or whatever, they don't really know what they're talking about. They're only talking about side flipping into a wall jump to get Whomp's Fortress Star 3, and basically only that. The original is really hard to control optimally, only a speedrunner understands everything about the movement. SM64DS is a better GAME, and this is coming from someone for whom Mario 64 was his FIRST game ever, I played and 100% on my own by asking for translation help from cousins while I was in Kindergarten and later Elementary School, when I was little and I had to wake up very early to put on a Oxygen mask for Asthma (I don't know the name of the device), during those 10 minutes or so I would sit down and play Mario 64 for a bit. Maybe I'll get a new Star, maybe I have a chance of advancing in this new world and doing some reconnaissance, maybe I'll finally get how to get the Eel to come out to play.

So back when I was in elementary school, (I want to say 3rd grade?), my teacher had a rule that after we take a test, we weren't allowed to just sit and wait for everyone to finish. We had to either read or write after we were done. Didn't matter what we wrote as long as we were writing. And I was so into Mario 64 DS back then, I decided to write down all my experiences with the game. I'd write about finding the secret stars and how I found them, unlocking characters and mini games, I basically wrote a walk through about my entire first time experience playing the game. Unfortunately the old notebook I wrote all that in is lost to time now, but I'll always have such fond memories of 64 DS because of it.

Yes, it is very good. In fact it surpasses the original in almost every way, including, hot take incoming: the controls. The controls are just much more approachable than the original is nowadays, and that's mostly due to the camera. But also, just in general, the characters are much less wonky. If you play it on a d-pad, sure it doesn't feel perfect, but by the end of the first star I was used to it. If you play it on a circle pad, it is MUCH more erganomic, and thus any complaint agaisnt then becomes negligable. Yes, they still only move in 8 directions, but they knew that and made accommodations for it, and it feels great. Granted, I did not grow up playing this game on the N64 hardware, so when it re-released for the 3D All-Stars collection, I got a huge shock. And people complain about Sunshine's controls and camera! The original Mario 64 is barely payable from certain camera angles and the camera is just as notoriously frustrating as Sunshine's. And you can't manipulate the camera hardly at all. It's legitimately very frustrating. And don't get me started on the collision bugs and glitches. I'd miss a very simple jump several times or clip through a platform simply because I hit it at specific angle that should have been solid. For as many glitches as Sunshine has, 64 has far, FAR more. But of course this never gets brought up because Sunshine ruined 3D Mario by making Mario feel the most versatile, fluid, and responsive that he has ever been. I know I'm going on a Sunshine rant and being snarky about it (Sunshine is in my top 5 games ever, I think its problems are blown out of proportion), but honestly, people just need to admit the 64 is just as janky... even MORE janky I'd argue. How you guys felt going from 64 to Sunshine is how I felt going from Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey to 64. 64 is a fun game, but it's easily the weakest of the four from a casual standpoint. You wanna enjoy the game, you have to tame the beast that is the controls. And we should see this as a good thing, it just means Mario is continuing to grow and becoming more accessible as time goes on. Overall, the updated models, textures, and controls make the game far superior to the original in almost every way, and that's just what was in the base 64. Taking into account the staggering amount of super fun extra content, it's a no-brainer to me. The only thing I will give to the original is the unique physics engine and the breakability of it. You can do some amazing stuff if you've been playing it every day since its release in 96. But if not, you're better off starting with 64DS, even if you have to use a d-pad with a run button. It's just much more polished than the original, which is only a victim of time and advancement in technology. Disclaimer: Not saying base 64 is a bad game, I'm just saying there would be absolutely no way I would have played through the entire game if I hadn't first played through and loved 64DS so much. DS will always be the version I think of and look back on with fond memories, playing the multilayer with my cousins

The character models are better for sure, but the textures? Lol no. The textures are inferior. I just don't get why people keep insisting pixel texture puke is superior looking to bilinear texture filtering. I get the feeling none of you who prefer the pixel look have played PC games in the late 90s with a Voodoo graphics card installed in your PC.

@@ironinquisitor3656 you look at the sand in base 64 and tell me that it's better. It's not. It legitimately gave me a headache and is disorienting. The DS sand texture is leagues better. The coloration is muted, but the textures themselves are so much more pleasant and readable. Edit: Also your main concern with the filtering is just the trade off you get with the DS hardware. The flickering doesn't take away from the fact that the textures are higher quality and generally more appealing. And they may not look good when they're blown up, but they look great on a handheld screen.
@ironinquisitor3656
@ironinquisitor3656 Жыл бұрын
@@bctalicorn809 Yeah they did look ok on a smaller screen. For the textures in the DS version such as the sand yeah, it just depends on the area in the game we are talking about. Plus this is 2004 vs 1996. By then when they were making the DS version of Mario 64 they knew how to use textures on 3D polygons in certain areas more effectively, even if it used the inferior texture filtering method on it due to the DS hardware limitations. The N64 had a harder time drawing textures on larger surfaces due to cartridge space and small cache, it's why the sand in that one level you described doesn't look that great. I definitely agree that the character models are superior in the DS version, by then they knew how to make 3D models look great.

I feel like people who grew up with the original SM64 don’t realize that it doesn’t control well either. Yes, it controls *slightly* better than SM64DS, but there’s not a huge difference. Both are fine once you get used to them. All the extra features in the DS version make it the definitive version of the game, in my opinion.

I adored Mario 64 DS at the time. It was a ton of fun, and did a lot of interesting tweaks to the original. Also, the launch DS honestly still looks good to me. It has a certain...Industrial-ness that appeals on some primal level. I never bothered upgrading, and still have mine.

I got this game at launch. What I seem to remember is that the d pad on the og DS felt different from the Lite. Once I switched to the DS Lite I remember not liking to play Mario 64 DS anymore just because I didn’t like the Lite’s d pad.

My first ever DS was that first silver blocky model and a family member gave it to me becasue they didn’t want it anymore (I was shocked) and one day I was like I wonder how much this system can bend and I snapped the top half off 😭

I can look past the control scheme of this game. It’s awkward, sure, but if you can get used to it, then Super Mario 64 DS is a great game, I love it with so much of my heart. There’s so much to this game that it’s honestly insane. Multiple characters with different strengths and weaknesses, extra missions to each world, more levels to play, new powerups, and side content with the multiplayer mode and the rec room

Loved this game growing up. An issue I have with it now that wasn't brought up in this discussion is the colors. I think in some cases, the DS version looks a lot less vibrant and saturated. This is especially noticeable in Bob-omb Battlefield, if you do a side-by-side comparison you'll get what I mean. Whether or not it looks worse is up to the player, but I don't like it as much.

It's an amazing game despite its shortcomings. It has all the content from Super Mario 64 and a few more levels. It has 4 playable characters. It had better looking models despite the lower poly count. Yeah, the d-pad controls were pretty bad, but... the rest was pretty great! I'd so take a rerelease where the only change was giving full 360 joystick controls. And, well, finagling the second screen info back on the first screen, of course.

There's a hack that allows for analogue controls on the 3DS, even with ZL/ZR and nub support to move the camera. It plays great.

If Nintendo had bothered to port Super Mario 64 DS to Switch as an OPTION (keep the original too) in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, I might have actually plonked the $60 for it. Playing this game with actual control sticks and on the big screen would be wonderful, because that would absolutely make this the definitive version of this game in my book. Of course, adding Super Mario Galaxy 2 and actually interesting extras would have helped make Super Mario 3d All-Stars not seem like the bare minimum, soulless cash grab it was too. And it still sold like hotcakes...sigh...

I played the original, I played 64DS when it launched and I never had a problem with the D-Pad. Right now I'm replaying 64DS on the Wii U and I like it more than 64 on Switch, which has analog controls. I don't mind it one bit. 64DS is just the cooler game with more stars, levels, characters.

14:04 Okay, but it's not like Mario could the the propeller thing in Super Mario 64 in the first place. It's one thing to argue that the Cap powers shouldn't have been divided by the 4 playable characters (and I still personally think it's a logical decision and not a big deal), but it's another thing to argue that all the characters should play the same. Why even have multiple playable characters, then? One thing I do agree on - the wall jump should have been universal. It's especially a pain to play as Wario without it (in fact, I'd have personally given Wario a completely different moveset akin to Wario Land and Wario World, like how they did in Render96).

I remember getting my DS at the European launch and nobody I knew cared at the time. Then going into school on the PSP launch day and some guy had a PSP with I think the racing game fired up and a couple of overpriced UMD movies and people were crowded round him, and it was a novelty in school for a good 2 weeks after.

I'll be honest, If the clunky controls were fixed and they made it so that all Characters can Wall Jump as Mario is still technically the only one able to fight and beat Bowser meaning he is unique in that aspect then this version would have been the Superior Version.

My pet peeve about M64 DS was the run button. 99% of the time you want to be running full speed. It should have been a toggle or hold B to walk. My hand would hurt eventually. Edit: there is a custom desmume build that adds control stick but its honestly not quite as good as n64 controls.

SO I'm here for this video especially it being Mario 64 DS. I love Mario 64 it's one of my favorites. While DS was an courageous remake it had many of issues. The one thing like about it was it included Yoshi, Luigi and, Wario. Who I never expected Wario cause Anti-Hero but the fact he was there made this feel whole. The game has new characters that's fine. They all played similar to Mario but had unique moves and characteristics. Sad cause I would have loved to see peach be the unlock during the post game. The additional 30 stars being added was only due to others being added, new bosses and, new world was okay but I feel like the devs might have bit off more than they can chew. What I mean by that is some felt rushed others felt untested and some very buggy. We get the fact it's the first game for the system and it's a remake of a classic 64 title but you had enough time to make things right do it. Also the controls was not good at all. Even on my 3ds I still had issues. 64ds was all over the place yet it tried and I give it that. Mini games and them being a marathon to get I could have done without. Lucky that new super Mario Bros did away with that. Plus we got Casino Luigi who looks amazing. While some many games are amazing some didn't need to be there at all. Let's be happy they didn't include that as part of completing the game. Overall 64 DS is a good game and a great start to remakes Nintendo did for 64 games but if they do move it to the VC via NSO "hopefully" they work the controls and layout out.
