One of the earliest known tool-assisted speedruns and an internet phenomenon back in 2004.
TODO: write about this run and why it's important.
Here is the run description on TASVideos: tasvideos.org/668M.html
----
This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004. It was inserted into the database for a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.
When this video was first released on the Internet in mid-2003, its incredible quality of play became a phenomenon; since few people knew how the video was made, it was widely believed that it was played in real-time by an extremely skilled player. When Morimoto detailed the making of the run on his website (which can still be read here), many felt deceived and turned to criticizing the video's "illegitimacy" instead. During this time, the concept of tool-assistance was still mostly unknown, and people even went as far as claiming that Morimoto had constructed the movie in several years' time by performing video editing on every single frame of the WMV.
While this video was not the first of its kind, it was the first to gain widespread interest, and contributed greatly to the popularity of speedruns in general.

Watched this back in '04 or so when it was bouncing around the pre-KZfaq internet. This is what got me interested in speedruns.

In 2003, a video of a Japanese player called Morimoto beating the NES game Super Mario Bros. 3 in 11 minutes and performing some other incredible stunts as well started floating around the Internet. It was a very controversial video because not many people knew about tool-assisted speedruns at the time, especially for the NES. Many people felt like they had been cheated when they found out it was done using an emulator. The video, however, gave the inspiration to Joel "Bisqwit" Yliluoma to start a website called NESvideos

And yet, they didn't realize the very obvious sloppy emulation sound.

Old emulator quirks are always just so interesting to me. Plus I can't believe this TAS will be 20 years old this year. This was one of the first TASes I've seen as a child, learning about them back in 2010

I think it can be done like that, but usually it's when they use certain hacks to achieve advantages that a regular player could not using a computer tool. I do not know how Morimoto made his videos but it was probably that way. There's a Wikipedia page on it (believe it or not) if you wanna know more.

Wait, so a tool-assisted speed run doesn't have anyone play it at all?

WTF min 01:07 score 100,200,4000?
@SuperNickid
@SuperNickid 3 жыл бұрын
@Gumisiek2003: that would happen even in the non-Japanese version, for example if they are 5 bommerag brother in a row and you jump all on their head without touching the ground, it his 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 1-up, while normal enemies are 100, 200, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 1-up. Since he jump on two regular enemies without touching the ground making 100 and then 200, then the next one that he jump on his a bommerag brother without touching the ground, his 4000, because the bommerag his on the 3rd jump without touching the ground gives 4000. If he would have continued the chain after that 4000, since he would have hit a regular enemies next it would give 800, it would have skip the 400, because if the bommerag brother was considered a normal enemies it would have give the 400 points instead of 4000 points. So that his why despite the 400 points not showing up the next hit in the chain would have been 800 points.

@dada78641: Why does the sound his very diffrent, it sound like it his being played on the Commodore 64, and the only other reason why it could sound like that, his he could be playing the rare Family computer disk system version of hit. I did already compare the sound and music diffrence with the NES, and Family computer cartridge version by playing on the Nintendo switch NES app and Family computer app, and both of them sound different, but the family computer version does not sound like the one up, in this video.

This was made in 2004 on an emulator that isn't as accurate as today's emulators, especially in sound emulation. You'll notice the colors are also quite "off" looking

@@dada78641: I might have found the reason why the music and sound so weird, he either used an emulation of an old clone of the console, take a look at this video when this guy play Super mario bros.3 on the NES and Family clone system, it sound the same as the one shown above. I put the time stamp already kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8CYicunzpy-hqM.html

@@SuperNickid That's a nice find, but it's definitely not why the sound is bad in this video. The emulator used in this video (Famtasia) attempts to copy the original NES, but it simply does a poor job. The people who made that Famiclone probably made similar mistakes when implementing their version. There are other old emulators that have similarly poor audio. Emulator developers sometimes end up making the same implementation shortcuts that lead to similar problems despite having no connection to one another. Famtasia also precedes that clone you linked to by a few years. It stopped development in 2001.

@@dada78641 : I did not imply that I'm right you wrong, and you can't question it, because if I behave like this I would be extremely immature for my age. I never said that I'm right about this, I just found it strange that a clone console sound just as bad, as the bad emulator.

What do you mean what do I mean? This guy obviously used a computer tool to generate this video. He didn't ACTUALLY do all that. And if you don't believe me, check the description, it says very clearly "One of the earliest known tool-assisted speedruns and an internet phenomenon back in 2004."
