There isn't much the costumes can do in terms of buffs as there's no environmental damage in Mario Odyssey. Really the only benifits I can think of is things like giving him better traction on icy surfaces or better swimming with the swim suit, Things like that.

Galaxy 1/2 are more linear takes on the formula that focus on making the challenge come from platforming and tighter level design. 3D Land and World are more concurrent to the 2D Mario games' structure, too, but they both have fucking *3D* in their names. That's not exclusive to the Mario 64 outfit though. There's multiple points in the game where you need specific costumes to enter an area/get a moon. In fact, every kingdom requires you wear one of it's costumes to either get in a room, get a moon, or impress a Bonneton resident (or the mermaids from Lake Lamode).

PastleConch 3D land and 3D world were even confirmed by shigeru miyamoto to not be "TRUE" 3D Mario titles because of the nature of true 3D marios, the idea of collecting a certain amount of stars, moons, shines, etc. to progress. The gameplay of the "3d movement but linear stage" marios focused on world-based level progression is more akin to 2D Mario, and 3d world even has terribly shoe-horned multiplayer which is just 1-3 players trying to keep up to the fastest one running through the stage. True 3d Mario games are single player (and "helper" co-op) with the camera located firmly behind the player and revolving around them rather than moving along the stage, which is the main thing people find different but can't put their finger on. I'd argue that only the 3ds was able to pull off a stationary cam only moving as you entered the next area due to the depth perception you had with the 3D effect enabledwhile Mario moved about the stage without you or the camera.
