A fan project would do any combination of the following: Try to make it photorealistic. Completely change the art style to something unrecognizable. Change it to what THEY want, not what fans would want.

It was one of the most graphically advanced/complex games on the snes, along with titles like donkey Kong country 3, which if they’d come out even a year or two later would have been marketed toward the n64

Paper Mario 64 is Mario RPG 2, they just couldn't name it that because Nintendo didn't own the rights to the name, so it was named Mario Story (Paper Mario in the West) instead.

Nintendo and Square worked together twice in the past with an all-star lineup of developers for 2 unique games. This is one of those games. The other one is Chrono Trigger. Both games are standouts among RPGS.

By this time in the SNES lifecycle, Nintendo was experimenting with 3D Prerendered sprites that approached more closely what next generation (for the time) of 3D consoles were capable of.
