Super Metroid’s Weirdest Unused Enemy - Bang

Hey, everyone! It’s time to discuss the 3rd (and weirdest) unused enemy in Super Metroid - Bang. This lil guy is practically harmless - as long as you leave it alone. It only deals 4/2/1 damage to suitless/Varia/Gravity Samus, respectively. Should you decide to attack it, be careful...
The Bang enemy keeps track of how much damage you’ve dealt to it. When it dies, it fires a charged shot in your direction, and the shot’s appearance depends on which beams you have equipped when the shot is generated. The shot will deal 100%/50%/25% of the total damage that you dealt to the Bang to suitless/Varia/Gravity Samus, respectively. For example, at the beginning of the video, Samus dealt 300 + 900 + 100 + 300 + 300 = 1,900 damage to the Bang, and thus the Bang’s shot dealt 475 damage to Samus (since Gravity was equipped).
Bang will take 5 (at minimum) beam/Missile/Super Missile shots (or Bombs) to kill. This is because it has 4 “expansions” to progress through - then, the next shot/Bomb will kill it. If you shoot the Bang DURING an expansion, it won’t trigger the following expansion, but it WILL add to the total damage dealt. You can see this at ~1:20 in the video, when I shoot the Bang with Hyper Beam twice in quick succession. This was done so that the Bang’s shot would deal just enough damage to kill Samus (1,000 damage per shot*6 shots*0.25[Gravity Suit] = 1,500).
For this video, I kept the Bangs immobile, which was convenient for demonstration purposes and for the setup to kill Stoke at the end of the video. If you'd like to see a mobile Bang, check out my "Part 2" video: • Super Metroid Unused E... . :)
If you’re wondering what happened at the end of the video... Bang and Reflec don’t really know how to handle Hyper Beam. If Hyper Beam is equipped when Bang generates its “death shot”, that shot will take the form of a charged Ice + Wave + Plasma [cIWP] shot (with Hyper Beam’s colors). Then, when the Reflecs "reflect" the beam, its damage value is reset to the standard value for the beam type being reflected - in this case, 900 for cIWP. So, although the shots that hit the Stoke near the end of the video had Hyper Beam’s colors, in the game’s mind, they were basically cIWP shots. As with standard cIWP shots, you can freeze enemies without killing them, even if they have well under 900 HP. And the colors of the frozen enemy depend on the colors of your beam - for example, try freezing an enemy and then equipping Murder Beam, or freezing an enemy after acquiring a shinespark suit (when your beam is gray). That’s why the Stoke froze and had Hyper Beam’s colors. :)
If you want to create your own Bang in the Etecoon Energy Tank Room, as seen in the video, enter the following 21 “cheat codes” in your emulator:
B484E5 3F

A19795 BB
A19798 3F
A19799 DB
A197A1 28
A197A4 4A
A197A5 BB
If you want your Bang to be mobile, add this code: A1978E 01.
Finally, here’s the code for Hyper Beam: 7E0A76 01.
Once again, thank you VERY much to PJ Boy (and everyone else involved in disassembly over the years) for making your Bank Logs publicly available. Would never have figured out how to do this otherwise. :)
Thanks for watching, everyone! :)

there’s so much detail and animation put into this enemy only for to not be used probably because a reflecting beam enemy that takes a lot of hits to kill isn’t that fun considering there was probably gonna be multiple in the rooms it was used in

Yeah. It looks like it'd need to be toned down in a few regards, like taking one or two fewer hits to pop, and maybe a damage cap. It looks like a great mapmaker tool for any challenge-style ROM hacks, though. I could see this being placed behind other enemies to emphasize accuracy or even pacifist rooms where you're meant to just avoid contact with anything. It could also be used for evasion/reflection puzzles like the demonstration at the end, just with an otherwise unreachable target like a switch for a door pre-wave. I can see why this wound up on the cutting room floor in the end; it's quite cruel in the state they left it in, and I could see a lot of players just getting tripped up by that kind of puzzle.

Holy crap it's so cool to finally see these unused assets in a controlled environment. I've always seen snipits of them in ROM hacks or on TCRF but never proper videos documenting them. This is sick, please keep these up! Also its insane to think that the Gravity Suit mitigates 75% damage, and yet most of those combos left you at a chunk of health gone or dead. Really makes you appreciate how powerful Samus is in SM.

Do you know how the damage is calculated? Is it just the sum of the damage values of the used attacks? Getting oneshot by it seems a little extreme. Also, stacking Bangs like you did is a cool idea, I think.
@GoldenChorizoCode
@GoldenChorizoCode 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Artey! Yup - it's just a sum, as you said. For example, starting at ~1:20 in the video, I shot the Bang with 6 Hyper Beam shots. Each shot deals 1,000 damage, and so the beam fired back at Samus dealt 6,000 * 0.25 (because of Gravity Suit) = 1,500 damage, which was just enough to kill Samus (14 full E-Tanks + 99 = 1,499 HP). For more details, check out the video description! :)

@GoldenChorizoCode
@GoldenChorizoCode 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for watching! :) Great question. Regardless of what weapon you use to attack the Bang, its "death shot" will take the form of the charged version of whatever beam(s) you have equipped. And the damage will always equal the total damage you dealt to the Bang (divided by 2 if Varia is equipped, and divided by 4 if Gravity is equipped). Missiles do 100 damage, Super Missiles do 300, and Bombs do 30. For example, if I had Gravity Suit and only Spazer equipped and killed the Bang with 2 Bombs, 1 Missile, and 2 Super Missiles, its "death shot" would appear as a charged Spazer shot and deal (30 + 30 + 100 + 300 + 300) / 4 = 190 damage to Samus. :)

At the beginning of the hyper beam shot you did two shots in quick burst and it only grew once. So does it only store 5 shots of damage, or can it store more? For example if you spammed missiles at it would it just store 5 missiles of damage or a crap ton? Any chance you could test this? What happens if you shine spark into it? Does the X-ray scope do anything when you look at it in the different forms? Why did the baby krocomire freeze the second time he got hit by the hyper beam vs just dying the first? Thanks if you get time to answer questions or test these.

In some ways I'm glad this enemy set went unused. They could have made some AMAZING puzzles with them but it may have bumped the difficulty up to unacceptable levels.

The energy-absorbing capabilities make me believe this might have been some sort of primitive form, perhaps a progenitor species, of Metroid. Both the visual and movement-AI similarities would support this theory.
