It would allow the devs instant access to any fighter without having to play through the rest of the game to get to that fighter. I also assume the 2P mode is for testing animation and attack frames in practice.

Bizarre they left out a feature like this. Surely it would be a great selling feature? But it's eerierly similar to the hidden 2 player mode in the NES Tetris. But you need a Game Genic to access that.

This is the greatest thing I've seen in a long time. Gotta bit emotional tbh. Me and my father played Super Punch Out when I was a boy. He disliked most video games but really enjoyed this, GB Tetris and Operation Thunderbolt Arcade. We really bonded when he played SPO. I enjoyed his reactions and he would always dream up strategies that were mostly silly but funny to try and execute. I never really connected with my Dad in most subjects and in a lot of ways we are very different people. SPO was something that gave us both something special. I really felt good about my hobby around my Dad. I remember for years he would always ask if there was a versus mode or game like SNES Punch Out but two players. He didn't like any other fighting game, EA sports boxing game or otherwise. Just SPO. It was weird. Anyway sorry for the story just really stoked about this find. Nothing but respect to the folks who dedicate their lives to finding this stuff.

Eventually a hacker will create a patch to make this mode a standard soon, that way we don't have to enter the code every time we want to fight an opponent. This and the playable Shin Akuma code (without using Game Genie) for Street Fighter Alpha 2 SNES was a good find that weren't found back then. I'm still waiting to see if anyone found a way to play as Krang's Android in TMNT Tournament Fighters for the Sega Genesis. He's in the game just not playable.

I used to play the hell out of super punch out with my little brother back when it was released, commonly holding the second controller while he played. As soon as I saw that this secret was discovered, I immediately recognized the character select screen. We had accidentally stumbled upon it one or two times while playing the game. We didn’t really know what to make of it as kids. I just thought it was some weird mode built into the game. We never explored enough to find that it actually contained a two-player mode. I’m pretty excited to find out that this was hidden in the game all along.

I suppose Super Punch-Out is probably a more obscure Nintendo game in an already more niche series. People usually go for the NES-Game or the Wii entry and not the one game in between, there just wasn't anyone who really bothered digging through the code once it was possible. Besides that there are (seemingly) no hidden sprites, sounds or whatnot associated to this which would usually garner the most attention, not even hidden text. What you would find are probably only a few lines of code which can easily be overlooked.
