"Gloria" was sung by Laura Branigan but the Original was by Van Morrison. "Gloria" is a rock song and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964. It was released as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go".

As already mentioned, the Van Morrison Gloria is entirely different from what Wizard sang(?), but it's been covered a lot. It's the one with the chorus that sings out the letters G-L-O-R-I-A, followed by Gloria! Wizard's Gloria on the other hand is by the St Louis Blues, circa 2019

Gloria, you're always on the run now Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow I think you've got to slow down before you start to blow it I think you're headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it You really don't remember, was it something that he said? Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria? Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'? If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'? You don't have to answer Leave them hangin' on the line, oh oh oh, calling Gloria Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria) I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria) But you really don't remember, was it something that they said? Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria? A ha ha, a ha ha, Gloria, how's it gonna go down? Will you meet him on the main line, or will you catch him on the rebound? Will you marry for the money, take a lover in the afternoon? Feel your innocence slipping away, don't believe it's comin' back soon And you really don't remember, was it something that he said? Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria? Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'? If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'? You don't have to answer Leave them hangin' on the line, oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria) I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria) But you really don't remember, was it something that they said? The Japanese voice when you turned over the ignition wasn't the car actually speaking, but the ETC. ETC is an automated system for toll roads that uses a card connected to your bank account that you insert into a card holder ETC unit somewhere in the car. It is an aftermarket addition that allows you to drive through tolls without stopping to pay. It was just saying that your ETC card was not inserted. Also, in case you didn't know, the number plates are fake. The top is Hiroshima prefecture, 1945 is the date, and the numbers are Aug 9th, the date the bomb was dropped in Nagasaki. I think they meant Aug 6th, the date the bomb was dropped in Hiroshima. Kinda messed up.

GT's were the sporty ones and Bourghams tend to have my gandpa features like buttons on the steering wheel. I own a 93 GTU and love daily driving it. All cars are just made up of a collection of Nissan parts so with a little work, they can be easily maintained in the US.

I used to own a grey-import Mitsubishi L300 Delica. Only 15 years old to come to Canada. Delica-specific parts had to come from Japan, but the importer had the connections to make it happen. If you had a Mitsubishi part number you could get parts through the usual channels, but if a Mitubishi dealer asked what kind of car it was for you either changed the subject or lied. The Super Exceed trim level meant soft mohair upholstery. None of this leather rubbish.

Unlike the US where leather is considered the premium for seat material, in Japan cloth is usually preferred for executive level cars like this Gloria, and even higher level vehicles like the Toyota Century. Cloth doesn't make anywhere near as much noise as leather when you sit on it or move around on it, and that is what gives it a premium status.

I've been doing work on my own vehicles for like 7 years, but only been working in a shop environment for a little over a year. Well, it seems like my passion is fading away because my work isn't being appreciated anywhere I go, just always seems like I'm rushed and I get that it's the name of the game to get cars done quick but, imo I feel like these places just want sub par work done that gets the customer in and out and... That's just not my mentality. I like doing quality work, not just "git er done"! Not sure if anyone else in comments has felt this way but at this point I'm just ready to get out of the automotive industry, I like doing it at my own pace on my own stuff but when it comes to being rushed, that's when I start messing things up.

Japanese imports are still popular here in the UK, but during the boom years in the 90's you could find some highly desirable cars. Most have failed the very strict "Shaken" inspection which is expensive, this like the MOT test in the UK is done at 3 years old from new, but it is very strict, hence you can find some excellent examples in the Japan car auctions where cars are inspected and graded. I bought a grade 4.5 Mitsubishi FTO via an importer, it only required some paintwork to bring it up to a grade 5. Spare parts can be a problem as a lot of these cars were not intended to be sold outside Japan, Mitsubishi imported about 200 FTO's hence you could order parts via dealers but they have now gone from the UK. Good luck to The Wizard or the owner in finding the spare parts, if you know anyone that can read and speak Japanese it will be a big help.

I was only thinking a few weeks ago, “what happened to all of the FTOs?”. There was a period about 20 years ago where they were really common in the UK, but they all just seemed to vanish overnight. Must’ve all rusted away. Cracking looking car.
@Barbarapape
@Barbarapape 8 ай бұрын
FTO's were a common sight in the 2000's due to the high number that were imported, but cars intended only for the Japanese market have no rustproofing and if you didn't have them treated they just rusted away failing the MOT. I had mine rustproofed and all the paintwork issues rectified before i used it it was still rust free when i sold it, sadly many importers didn't bother.@@siwynjones

My Dad had an Impreza WRX from Japan back in the late 90s. As you say a combination of RHD and the Shaken test provided a steady supply of fun Japanese cars to the UK. He's still got a DC5 Integra Type-R that he's had restored to a good condition. There was some tax benefit to importing them via Northern Ireland, so they had NI plates.
@Barbarapape
@Barbarapape 8 ай бұрын
There were a number of importers that used to ship then to NI and then to the UK. My FTO was shipped directly to the UK, you had to check what grade they were lower graded cars needed a lot of work to make them worth owning. Today the high cost of shipping has made them expensive, at least we enjoyed them whilst we could.@@jamesweatherley9215

This era can be hard to work on but its my favorite.

The Gloria is a pretty interesting and quirky car. it's sibling Cedric got the very ingenious toroidal CVT at the next, and last, generation. although they were basically the same car, only the Cedric got the toroidal, not the Gloria.

Cloth seats in my 13 year old Astra, perfect condition. Leather seats in my MX5 after one year (only pleasure mileage) have marks etc. plus the other issue when warm (has heated seats so no problem when it is cold). So though I love my MX5, yes, would prefer cloth seats if possible.

Would be fun to see more videos on this car, fun fact up here in Canada you can import cars that are 15 years or older, so you see alot "newer" imported cars up here. They did introduce this car to North America in the 11th Gen as it was imported as the 2nd Gen Infiniti M45 which only on sale for 2 years before they released the 3rd Gen Infiniti M. This car also had a larger engine from the standard Glorias when it was imported to be sold as an Infiniti.

Looks like Nissan was panicking to capture some Lexus LS sales with that model. I've never heard or seen one of these, how cool is that with such an early infotainment system! It's wild seeing an old style square screen in the car. Thanks for sharing Wizard fam!

Still, in a way it looks even cooler than Lexus LS (which takes too much in design from Mercedes) and have its own style, reminding, but not copying from, Volvo or even Jaguar. Should be VERY cool in black.

It certainly has the early 1990-94 LS400 shifter, it looks identical in both shape and buttons, I wonder if they used the same 4 speed Aisin transmission as well which had 3 speeds plus manual overdrive hence the switch button on the shifter.

In the late 1990's I bought a used '82 Datsun Nissan Maxima as an airport car, and it had the famous talking dashboard. Turns out that it used a tiny plastic phonograph to play various phrases, such as "Door Is Open". It didn't work all the time, but nowadays that part is a collectors item. "Betty the Brown Beater" was being sold from airline pilot to airline pilot in Indianapolis until around 2005 when it finally disappeared. THAT CAR ALWAYS STARTED! I walked up to it after it sat for two months in the employee lot unused. It was covered with a foot of Indiana snow. I climbed in, turned the key, and get this: It started right up! Great video!

I remember the Prince Gloria 6 that was sold here in Australia in the late 60s before Prince was taken over by Nissan. The engine I believe was a slightly de-tuned version of the 2 litre six cylinder engine used in the Prince Skyline GT.

Just in case, nobody else has told Mrs. Wizard yet, cloth seats are considered to be more of a luxury in japan than leather so you don't see leather seats often in the nicest high-end cars...

No they rested their thumb a lot on that steering wheel spoke, as I have seen that wear pattern a lot on a few vehicles. Basically they had their hand below that spoke grabbing, so that tells me they must of done a lot of highway or straight road ways over there. Might also be the pinky bottom of the hand resting there, but it is hand and finger wear that caused it.

There were left-hand drive Glorias (IIRC, in the middle east), just as an FYI. EDIT: Also, cloth seats seemed to be pretty popular in 90's Japan even with luxury cars (see: the Toyota Century often having cloth seats in spite of being a Rolls-Royce competitor)

Cool. The voice on start is asking you to put in the ETC card which is Japan's version of EZPass or electronic highway payment. The front plate shows that the car was from Hiroshima. And one of the radiation sessions was 'FM Horse Racing ' I think.

The engine is relatively small and HP is modest for such a large car. I owned a 1997 Infiniti Q45 (Nissan Cima in Japan) in the U.S. It had a 4.1 liter engine with 266 HP. (I now have been driving an '03 Q45 for eight years; it has a 4.5 l. engine with 340 HP. And a somewhat harsher ride compared to the '97, because I think after 2000 Nissan thought everybody wants a sport-tuned suspension, even in a luxury sedan.)

0:56 LHD versions of the Y33 Gloria & Cedric did exist. With the Gloria being sold in the Middle East/GCC while Cedric in some Asian countries (e.g China i believe?). They only came with a VQ30DE V6 and lacked some fancy and quirky features that JDM equivalent received (as usual).
