The tiny interior is typical of a 1950's British sports car. The Cobra was developed from the AC Ace after all.

7:41 funny story in regards to the spacers, I bought an '87 Foxbody that was advertised as "stock" recently, the whole drive home, it sounded like the valvetrain was falling apart and it had a horrible misfire. I pulled a valve cover and realized that this "stock" engine actually had an E303 cam, Cobra 1.7:1 roller rockers, and GT40 heads. Whatever dumbass installed everything didn't realize that the huge roller rockers were rubbing on an oil baffle inside the valve cover, resulting in a bent pushrod and a lot of noise. I went through the whole top end and replaced all the other shit they did wrong, car runs fantastic now.

We've built a few of those. The 427 cubic inch version is based on the 350 Windsor block design, however the blocks we use are made by Dart in Michigan. The Dart block permits a cylinder bore diameter of 4.125" and that bore size, coupled up with a 4" stroke crankshaft will yield 427 cubes.

The Superformance is one great car. I bought mine 23 years ago and have well over 100,000 miles on it. It still looks almost new (fit and finish is incredible) but it does have some road rash from about a billion tiny rocks banging away on the front over the years. Their resale is the best of the replica world. The only other Cobra that is as good is the actual Shelby…..they have a very similar resale value (and no….I am not talking about one of the 900+ originals built in the 60’s). Actually, the Shelby’s are built in the same factory as the Superformance and the Superformance is the only replica licensed by Shelby. Some things to look at on this car to make it better are the rear upper shock mounts. The old shock mounts should be replaced with the R/T upper mounts for safety. If you look at them closely, you will likely find that the mounting holes are being deformed at the frames by the shear force and there is a much beefier upper shock mount that we (Superformance Cobra Owners Geoup) recommend that is available from Cobra Valley. There are stock rear upper shock mounts from the manufacturer today which are stronger than the old ones and use a stronger set of bolts as well and I have not heard of any issues with the newer brackets but I would still change them out for safety. A broken mount is nothing anyone wants to mess with at any speed. I am unsure when this car was built but I am guessing it may have the better factory mounts but not the best mounts. If it was built after 2012 it surely has the better mounts. I would have to look to be certain when the new mounts began being manufactured…..maybe as early as 2006 but I don’t think so. As for the amp meter……that can be fixed in 5 mins with a 5 inch piece of wire. There is nothing wrong with the gauge most likely. It is simply some interference. It would be too difficult to explain here…..for me anyway….but it’s an easy fix of a quirky meter. If the bouncing doesn’t bother someone I’d say you could leave it alone since it is not faulty…..just aggravating. But a new original equipment gauge is going to do the same thing. That thing appears to have the original yellow shocks and they are less than desirable on this car. The manufacturer changed to Billsteins many years ago. Once again, Cobra Valley has some much better shocks designed specifically for this car along with far better sway bars, springs and ball joints. They make this car a much better safer driving / handling car…..and NO I do not work for or have any association with Cobra Valley. It is simply that the owner of Cobra Valley is very plugged into Superformance and the factory and has done a lot of research and design on these cars…..he also owns five or six of them and is probably the most knowledgeable mechanic on the planet when it comes to these cars. Like I said, the manufacturer (Hi-Tech out of South Africa) comes to him for input. Check out what is available at Cobra Valley for these cars as well as their GT40, Coupe and Corvette. You can make that car a whole different beast.

@garyosborne8906
@garyosborne8906 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnszwede8516 John….if you are even a little serious about being on a track….especially competitively…..you need to follow up on the Cobra Valley upgrades. Unless you are racing other Cobras, you will have difficulty being competitive on the track. The cars come from the factory for those of us who drive them on the street and drive them a lot. Now, with the proper upgrades they can be transformed into absolute track beasts. For a guy like me, even though I have well over 100,000 miles in the seat, my lack of skills will never allow me to run with the big boys who track a lot. But that is even a bigger reason to get the suspension tuned up. Drying hard on the roads can put us in situations where everything needs to be balanced and work together. My car is like it is on rails. The stock shocks will have you all over the place. The upgraded shocks will keep you planted but still give you a great ride. The sway bars really make a big seat of the pants improvement in handling. You can take the stock ball joints out and to move them much you will have to put them in a vice and beat them with a hammer. The upgraded ball joints move like silk. I don’t know how much that will help on the track (probably a lot) but it totally removes that pesky steering will shake you probably get beginning around 55 MPH on up to about 70. The originals are good quality but they are a standard off the shelf part made for much heavier cars and so don’t move much. There is also a safety issue with the rear upper shock mounts. Not as bad as the older cars (the manufacturer made some improvements back in the 90’s after a few broke with devastating outcomes. But the R/T upper mounts from Cobra Valley are way over engineered to take that issue totally out of our minds. The R/T shocks and springs also make a tremendous difference. The old 90’s shocks are horrible. They have made them better over the years but the Cobra Valley shocks and springs are light years ahead in performance. If you get springs, get at least 400 lb (probably the best for combination street and track use) and 450 is arguably even better. The stock springs are only around 300 lbs. I went to the 350’s which was recommended way back when they came out and I wish I had gone to 400 lbs and I am strictly a street guy other than getting out on the track once in a blue moon for fun with no one close by. Of course, Randy Thomas at Cobra Valley can and will give you great advice if you give him a call. He engineered and produced all this stuff (plus much more including oils etc) and knows more about the SPF Cobra than ANYBODY. Even the factory comes to him for advice on the Cobra, GT 40, and Shelby Coupe. He has 4 SPF Cobras he experiments with plus a GT40 and their new Grand Sport Vette. Good luck in improving your car. It’s worth every dime and while not cheap it’s not all that expensive to do. You might also consider joining SCOF (Superformance Cobra Owners Forum) also owned and operated by Randy Thomas. It has a tech library that will blow your mind. You will make life long friends on there as well and enjoy BSing with the guys and a few gals not to mention getting any tech question answered by the best minds in the Cobra world. It is at least as incredible as the car. As a matter of fact, now that I am getting older and not driving as much, I keep my car more because of SCOF than because of the enjoyment I get from driving the darned thing. You must be a verified SPF Cobra owner to be a member. Check it out.

For Cobras less is nearly always more. The 289 Cobras (AC or Shelby) are nicer to drive, albeit slower, than the big engined ones. I have driven one of the Lubinsky Cobras in South Africa, with a 6.6L Roush engine and it was not nearly as nice as the 1965 289 Thames Ditton built AC Cobra, I have driven quite a lot. The '65 car has just the right amount of power (290 BHP) for its handling and its surprisingly light non-assisted steering is a delight.

For a period of time there was a person living in my condominium building that had one of these Shelby Cobra Replica cars. These cars have a unique appearance. Since I was born in 1951 I am very familiar with the old fashioned method of starting a carburetor car when the engine is cold and the carburetor had an automatic choke. This was the same way I started my parents 1964 Ford Station Wagon when the engine was cold. The method demonstrated in this video was the same method explained in the 1964 Ford Station Wagon owners manual.

He ended up having us build install a 351 with a t5 transmission, steering was for a Thunderbird. That car was incredibly fast! Customer knew someone and had it weighed at the airport, it was like 1950lbs. Thing read like peak 445hp/496ft/lbs of torque on the dyno. Idk the coolest thing about that car for me, for some reason, was the one huge nut for the wheels!

Beautiful car! Some might take issue with it not being a "true" Cobra, but just look at it and listen to that 427! I never really thought about how starting a carbureted car is a lost art, but I suppose just one more arcane skill us old boomers have 😀 And as others have mentioned, the ammeter measures whether the battery is being charged or discharged, with the ideal being right in the middle. I had a '77 Dodge that had that instead of a volt meter (or warning light), except it never moved. So... it didn't warn me when the alternator died or later when the voltage regulator (not built into the alternator like later cars) got stuck on full charge all the time.

I would add two black chrome quality mesh grills at the front of the car to protect the radiators from road rocks and sad to say,I know it would be ugly but I would put secondary leg protection where your legs can contact those great sounding side mufflers getting out. That kind of burn,when you just got off the interstate gunning it ,is instantaneous and very painful. But what a wonderful car. Not a kit car at all. The Superformance is a quality special manufactured high performance classic that is many ways better then the original Shelby. Especially since those original Shelbys are now going for several million dollars each. That box frame looks ridiculously strong as does the x braced rear a arms on the rear suspension. The entire car is built like a frikken tank. A very very very fast wonderful sounding and looking tank. Yea,definitely on my lottery list ,for sure.

Just to clarify, the ammeter doesn't show how many amps the battery has left; it shows the total current draw on the electrical system. If it's negative when the car is running, it means either your alternator isn't working or something is drawing too much power. Modern cars use a voltmeter instead.

If thinking of building one, consider the Kirkham Cobra. Beautiful all aluminum body (made at the old MIG factory in Poland, and a round tube frame. They also make the 289 "slab side" original, equally stunning. (yea thats the one I want) You can basically get a car that matches the original exactly down to the Girling brakes if you want them. Pretty cool...

Nicely engineered car. I don't get why they went to a square tube frame, though. The originals had a far lighter, stronger 4" round tube main frame rails. I know Factory Five (the biggest Cobra replica maker in the world) uses 4" round tubes. I suppose it's cheaper and easier to do the square tubing.

Only the Mark 3 cars had the 4" tubes. This was an improvement designed by Brian Waite (ex Aston Martin and Lister). The Mark 1 and 2 cars have 3" diameter main tubes. It was found with the sole experimental 427 Mk.2, that these were hopelessly inadequate to handle the torque. That car was quickly changed back to a 289. Brian designed and built the tubular chassis for our 1970 "Fraud" Morgan modsports car 4/4 with a Martin 2L engine.

A friends dad got a Cobra kit car which he built with the Jag suspension option over the Toyota Crown one. He's a welder by trade and took one look at the chassis as it was shipped and cut it up and put it back together again because the welds were shoddy. He put a 427 in it and had the same colour paint scheme. It looked just like this car. The paint job he had put on won awards at local car shows and he took out car of the year for the local Ford show. I loved that car.

Also you could consider replacing it with a normal camera that has decent video quality and mic inputs. I recommend Panasonic. Sony makes good stuff too.

WIzard, DJI Osmo Action 1 (original) will not overheat. Like the GoPro you don't have to focus it either. Picture is decent but not quite as good as the new GoPros, probably on par with a Hero 8. You need the CYNOVA audio adapter for it which is cheap and works well. Very cheap and reliable combo for an action cam.

I hate to tell ya Wiz, but that's not a 427 from the real Cobra days. That's a Windsor based 427 stroker engine. I built one of these 'kit cars' a little over 10yrs ago. It was powered by a mildly built 03 Cobra engine, with the parts car being a wrecked Cobra. It got all the parts from the drivetrain, 6sp Tremec and the IRS. The car kept everything from the donor car, except a/c. With a custom wiring harness, the stock 03 Cobra computer ran everything as it did in the Cobra.That means computer controlled engine and active traction control and anti-lock brakes. With using the stock computer and the safety features functioning, this was about the safest Superformance MKIII Shelby Cobra you could build. You could still easily get in trouble with the car! It was way faster than an 03 Cobra and could stop MUCH quicker. It was as pretty as it was quick. It was painted with 04 Cobra Mystic paint.....STU PID expensive! It was a very fun , but frustrating build. I'd build another, but I'd charge a hell of a lot more! Hmmmmmmmm........I wonder if a Coyote engine would fit?

Once the auto choke is set by an initial push on the throttle, it should start foot off if the fast idle cam is set properly. Important to not have the choke set too rich in very cold starts, or it might flood. Carbs vary with this condition. I never liked regular starting fluid, but cigarette lighter fluid works very well.

Sorry that you're having problems with your GoPro. 😞 (I have a GoPro 10) It's a known issue that they can easily overheat and shut down, especially if the weather is hot outside (+80F). The temp sensors inside the case are very sensitive and the camera will shut down to protect the video processor circuits/GPU. It might help to see if your GoPro needs a firmware update to solve or at least mitigate the overheating issue. Good luck.
