In this video we cover some of the radioactive pentax vintage lenses that used up to 30% thorium by weight. They are the Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 and the SMC Takumar 55mm f1.8.
Both are pretty wonderful lenses I feel as though they deserve more recognition than they get. They are also pretty cheap film lenses that are easy to find especially on ebay.
There are plenty more radioactive lenses and many people ask if radioactive lenses are dangerous and the answer is that no they arent. Don't worry about them, just don't eat them or sleep with them and you will be okay!

Just got the SMC takumar 55mm 1.8 yesterday!! Absolutely astonishing how nice the image quality and background compression with a tiny 5mm over the 50mm!! And it's super easy to manual focus compared to my Fd 50mm 1.4

My favorite is the 55 f2. It's the same optical formula as the f1.8 except It's very sharp wide open. Smooth bokeh, sharp, and even cheaper than the 1.8 or the 1.4.

They're not so cheap on ebay here in Germany anymore because they have gained some sort of cult following like the Helios recently. But my favourite cheap lens is actually also a Pentax, the 50mm 1.7 that came as a kit lens with every second Pentax camera in the late 70s. It's incredibly sharp wide open and has such a buttery smooth bokeh, and it's still incredibly cheap if you don't get it from the first "buy now" professional on ebay. I got mine for 10 Euros on a flea market, I bet you can still find it for 20 everywhere. And it doesn't yellow, although maybe for B/W that yellowing is a feature, not a bug. :) Also maybe worth mentioning, Pentax K is as easy to adapt also on Canon DSLRs as M42, should you still own one of those dinosaurs. :D

You can just zoom in and focus in live view, part of what I do. Or just install Magic Lantern and use their focus peaking~
@obscur_yoann
@obscur_yoann 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t like that zoom... you should always push the zoom button 4 times to go back to your full image... Very not handy. Magic lantern doesn't work with the mark IV... but I am still searching for a mirrorless anyway so sooner or later I will change. I just take my time 😉

Yes I do! But I admit it is much easier to use on a mirrorless camera. However, you can use liveview with the DIII to focus and it's all good. Great for video, if you have Magic Lantern you can get peaking too : )
@AlexJacksonSmith
@AlexJacksonSmith 5 жыл бұрын
Noealz, I didn't realise that you can do that... Which adapter do you need? I don't have these lenses, but would consider adapting my Nikkor AIS & Mamiya lenses. As for the focus thing, for street, f5.6/8 and the depth of field markers on the lens can avoid focusing issues. But probably only works for DAYTIME photography. :) A.,
@Noealz
@Noealz 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlexJacksonSmith You can get an adapter for your lenses, for example my lenses are m42 screw mount. So I just need an m42 adapter for my specific camera. You can find pretty cheap adapters online for around 10 dollars that will allow you to use old lenses with your digital cameras. But of course, different lenses with different mounts require different adapters! Most of my vintage lenses are m42 so lucky for me : )
@AlexJacksonSmith
@AlexJacksonSmith 5 жыл бұрын
Yes but I thought the distance between older lenses and the canon is similar to the mamiya to nikon and requires "correcting glass". Nikkor lenses on a Nikon needs no adapter, but more importantly no correcting lens. Which brand do you use for the Canon adapting? Just a cheap thing or one of the more costly brands?
