Took your advice and we brought a Baader contrast filter for our ST150. Boy what a difference, 15 years of "Christmas lights fringing" gone over night. The wife and I got so used to the fringing and were skeptical about the capability of filters, but we were blown over how this one got rid of about 95% of the nuisance. Thanks for the tips and keep them coming. What we like is you giving advice on how to keep costs down and making the joys of the universe reachable to the less wealthy - exactly what your video here was all about. Brill.

Thank you Rob for sharing your experiences with the ST150, Yep I never launch a video, if I knew it wasn't going to work. I always make sure my video content is true to my viewers and subscribers. There too many Astro channels making false claims, just for for views and subs!! That Baader contrast filter is defo the best buy for any Archromat, now you can take long exposure of deepsky objects, as long you can cope with the slight yellow cast in your images, as long the stars are not bloated with fringing, the filter will do an amazing job. Again Achromat can be used for imaging and totally true, that you do not need spend a ton of money on ED or APO Refractors to achieve decent images!! Remember the EQ mount with at least on RA tracking motor and the mount is Polar aligned correctly will be the biggest factor in order to achieve great viewing and long exposure Astrophotography!! Enjoy your new scope, and look forward to another MP ASTRO video, coming very soon!! Wish you Rob and your wife CLEAR SKIES!!

Another option for the drawtube light leak is to make a mask to slide over the drawtube inside the focuser. Draw the outline of the focuser housing and the centered drawtube onto a piece of black craft stock(can make one too using any craft paper and spray paint it flat black or flock it). Cut out to fit snug on the drawtube and enough clearance to be pulled toward the back of the housing. Fit it down over the drawtube from the inside down into the housing. Now back out the focus tube backside and it should move the mask to the maximum outward draw. Alternate methods include creating a thin rubber mat boot to slide over the tube like the shifter gear lever in a manual car. Lots of ways to approach this! Also, don't forget you can flock or paint that focus tube taking into account the rail and the bearings that ride on the tube.

really appreciate the video - i took mine apart some years ago and forgot which order to put the optical elements back into the tube. I''m now going to go re-visit this scope as it just sat collecting dust-stars on the shelf. I've always wondered how it will perform with a decent astro camera and narrowband filters - time to try.. Cheers and thanks Martin for the time you took to produce and explain the scope in detail. - Mark
@MPAstro
@MPAstro Жыл бұрын
Right on! I think with the Narrowband filters and decent camera, the ST80 will excel in image quality. With Narrowband imaging the chromatic aberration will not show up!!! The F5 seems to be perfect for imaging as well with decent field of view. I wish all EDs and APO telescopes are made at F5 not the usual F7 and F6 you see and you have to buy a focal reducer to just toget F ratio down which sometimes you can't get even close to F5.

Excellent video mate. You've definitely sold me on the Baader filter. I have a Skywatcher ST120 with an Altair lightwave premium dielectric diagonal. Have a T-ring but not with a filter thread so unsure where I'd place it while I guess it will have to be a 2 inch version. Here's a thing though: I recently saw a video showing how the blue fringing can be eliminated in one of the photo processing suites (seems Photoshops and others can do it). Perhaps the filter would just make it so much easier in post processing however plus, when it comes to visual, by the look of it, that yellow cast is nothing much to bother about anyhow because we look for discerning detail in objects rather than just the overall colour. That's why we have coloured filters in the first place. Also, it makes me laugh thinking about 'false colour' or a little fringing when most astrophotographers use their LRGB filters on mono cameras and present photos in the end which don't even honestly represent the true colours of many DSOs. They're basically 'light painting'.
@MPAstro
@MPAstro Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Mark, there is a way to remove colour fringing on Photoshop, I think by adjusting the blue channel on the image, though this filter will reduce the effect alot, it is defo worth the cash and save alot of hassle in the process. Lol being a LRGB mono user myself, I totally agree with you there, you are light painting, especially when you Narrowband an image!!

@@MPAstro Still haven't invested in the Contrast Booster yet Martin (expensive and hard to find too) but, meanwhile, have you compared it at all to the Baader 495 longpass yellow filter? @@MPAstro Martin we (wife and I) need some help. We are new to imaging and DSLR. Last night, using our ST150 and Canon 600D, we took 50 shots of andromeda, ISO400, 2 min exposures. A single 2 min shot looked similar to your single 2 min shot. However, we ran the 50 shots through DSS the final image looked the same as the single 2 min image again similar to your single shot clip. WE are baffled why we do not see the elliptical galaxy just the central round core? Any ideas why? Also, with your Jupiter video what shutter speed did you use? Thanks
@MPAstro
@MPAstro Жыл бұрын
The ST150 is a large aperture telescope, so the field of view is smaller, compared to the ST80 which as a wider field, hence your only seeing the central core, A focal reducer will help a little but it's still not enough, Have you tried Astronomy tools Field of View app, it's a great app and will help you determine what FOV you will get with the ST150. Here is the link to the app: astronomy.tools/calculators/field_of_view/
@robbell8724

@@MPAstro Yes, you are right, using the FOV tool I can only see the centre of galaxy. Up to know I have only done visual observations. I am in my seventies and the ST150 is becoming a bit of a physical challenge. After watching your video, I plan to sell it and get a more manageable ST80.

There are some differences in coatings. Orion Short Tube 80 is multicoated, the ST80 is fully coated and the CT80 is coated. I would suspect Celestron and Skywatcher do the same.

@MPAstro

The difference is the focal length, I'm guessing that 80mm is longer focal length than the ST80. which means the 80mm will be a much slower telescope than ST80.

@MPAstro
@MPAstro Жыл бұрын
Sorry John for the delay, been working late. Yes you make dew shields out of cardboard and wrap around the objective lens, you minimse the dew forming on the lenses that way. Or you and fit dew band heaters and with a dew controller, you can power a 12v supply to heat up the objective lenses and stop dew completely.

There is the Star Quest mount which is similar to the Avant EQ mount, but you have to buy it with the telescope and the RA Motor drive is sold serperately. I do see alot of the Skywatcher Star Adventurer mounts for sale on the secondhand market, but these mounts are so ovely priced and you need a very good tripod, which are hard to find which is suitable for the Star Adventurer. And GTI mount which is the latest one, looks great, but there is no stock left and again stupid prices, where EQ-3 and eq-35 are reasonably priced and already available. AZ-EQ Advant is defo a good mount, it was the worst choice for Skywatcher to discontinue it's production, this mount should have replaced the EQ-1 mount that's for sure.

@MPAstro
@MPAstro Жыл бұрын
Get the large one Miles. Yes it will stick out abit and may look weird and will dwarf the main tube abit. But with a longer bar you will be able to make alot of adjustment on the balancing especially when you connect a DSLR camera at the focuser end. Ideally you want as much of the DSLR camera raised in such a way that bottom end does not collide when the DEC axis and RA axis hit either the tripod leg or the base, while you can still get a perfect balance, though it's going to take some practice to achieve this, so expect to do alot of tightening and untightening of screws and moving stuff about in order to achieve this!!
