Now 43 years old and introduced by Colin Bond, this 1973 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 was the 14th running of the Bathurst touring car race.
This was the first race to be held under the new metricised distance of 1000 kilometres, rather than the 500 miles (810km) previously contested. It was held on 30 September 1973 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst.
The race was open to cars eligible to the locally developed CAMS Group C touring car regulations with four engine capacity based classes and it was the 3rd round of the 1973 Australian Manufacturers' Championship.
All credit to Colin Bond, Channel 7 Sport, General Motors Holden, Dunlop Tyres, Castrol.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I still think the GTHO Phase III is the classiest-looking Australian car ever; the XA to XC is the ugliest (does this make my bum look big), Ford agreed by releasing the XD about 5 years later.

@@brianvogt8125 I hear what you're saying regarding the HO, but it's a 4 door sedan. To me those big arse coupes, with rear guards filled with racing rubber, look the goods. Mind you, I would not say no, if anyone gave me one, be it an XR with 289 through to the X series coupes with 351 cubes.

Although the best surviving highlight reel of the day, clearly promoting the narrative of a certain Holden victory being lost due to miscalculation (Chivas running out of fuel) is questionable at best with the benefit of hindsight (the film is credited to General Motors and their sponsors at the time). Clearly Moffat slowed significantly when no longer challenged for the race lead, so while it is possible he may have had his own trouble if pressed harder, it is certainly a hollow claim that because Brock and Chivas were able to finish within a lap of Moffat and Geoghegan despite running out of fuel they lost a certain race win. The race pace of the Torana's may have been compromised by trying to run to only two stops with Geoghegan able to make up about two and a quarter minutes over Chivas in his stint alone. Brock was the only driver to not haemorrhage time to the race winner but never got close to achieving the fuel economy required for his strategy to work, falling short on both his stints by as much as 16 laps. Brock obviously would have had to slow significantly more to complete the required laps. The real victim of this narrative is the incredible effort by John Goss not being a bigger part of the story. Despite Goss building his race car in his spare time he was able to take pole position, set a new lap record and lead the factory entered cars by 40 seconds at his first pitstop. If not for some small exhaust issue, and a collision with a car that had illegally re-joined the race (after being towed), the 1973 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 may well have been celebrated as a Goss/Bartlett victory in the David versus Goliath style.

@@jimmartin9704 Just how many laps do halfwits think were covered in the '73 race? If Brock caught Moffat in his first stint & passed him & Moff spun out in the process & if Brock cauld run at that pace & still stay out until lap 54 after Moff had to pit his gas guzzling barge on lap 45, I think it is fairly safe to say Brock had that race by the scruff just as he had the year before. And anyone who assumes Harry was silly is just a fuckwit, especially after his little 202 Toranas beat Ford's great 351 turds in '72 & very nearly beat 'em again in '73. Delusions are cheap.

And firth is totally to blame for the fuck ups in his fuel plan by telling Chivas to go for max laps, went well for him didn't it?????? 74 was even worse for firth 100 laps into race and l think 6 laps in front , Harry tell Brock to slow down, which intern made them fuck the motor up( that was from Brocky mouth not mine).why do you think he never drove with firth again after that race, he didn't know shit

I vaguely remember that there was a flag colour to indicate "emergency vehicle on the track." Marshalls were probably waving them well in advance of camera view. Mt. Panorama is a pig of a place to impose a safety car on a race leader - he/she could easily lose 2 minutes of well-earned advantage. Track exit points are rare - Murray's Corner & Hell Corner spring to mind. McPhillamy Park has one now; not sure whether it was there in the 1970s. All other breaks in the fence are dead end driveways to private homes.

OMG moment at 16:31 to 16:34, sighting of the black HQ Monaro (steered by Ron Dickson - qualified 20th, DNF after 130 laps). Great to see the Toranas and Falcons, would have been nice to see more of the five Chargers that were entered too. Full field of different makes and classes (unlike today's V8 Superbores). Public surveys were done by the organisers, to determine what the public would pay to see. Unfortunately, that's what led to Stupor Cars. We are in the minority, but that's life. It's all irrelevant now, because production cars so closely resemble each other, that it wouldn't be much of a spectacle. I attended the 12 hour production car race (and minor events) during Easter 1994. RX7, Maserati, Volvo 850 (Peter Brock, blown turbo). My arrival almost doubled the spectator crowd. 2 guys died in a sidecar race when they crashed at the end of the McPhillamy Park sand trap.

I remember Moffat over correcting on the corner on the hill the car oversteered . He said that there was no way that he was allowing the car and him self to over steer down that hill because it would of killed him. So he got in a tank slapper to allow the car to go in a direction away from the drop off. So he saved the car twice . 👍❤️🇦🇺

So big heavy Fords with V-8s against small light holdens with V-8s. Seems like a fair fight to me. Surprised a Ford ever won this race. Also the holdens look like Isuzu I-Marks that were sold here in America and the Falcons are almost identical to the Torino that won many races and championships for Ford in the late sixties and seventies in Nascar, ARCA, and USAC. Cool track. Hope to visit sometime. I understand it's a public road that you can drive anytime(except during the race of course) Edit: So I guess the holdens had a V-6. But I read that later on a few years they were running 308c.i. V-8s so I assumed these were also. My apologies. Still think smaller and lighter on road courses is a huge advantage

Yes mate, smaller turned out to be a big advantage. The Torana you saw started life in the UK as a four cylinder Vauxhall. GMH (General Motors Holden) saw an opportunity to create a new class in the market for a six cylinder compact. The nose was stretched to suit a straight six, it was an instant hit. Before that, Harry Firth (overseeing Holden's racing program) on seeing the original prototype saw massive potential and created the GTR-XU-1 Torana. The gamble on a smaller lighter car payed off in 1972. The Torana got the holy grail....Bathurst. Seeing off the Ford works team and Chrysler (who by then had no factory support) to claim victory. The Torana did eventually get a 308c.i V8....along with a four and six cylinder but not until 1974 with the LH series. That was only in what was called the SLR/5000. It was very fast but as it turned out, it was too fragile for the power as far as racing went. Harry Firth did his magic and made an improved version dubbed the L34. Much better, but Ford launched a counter attack with the XC Falcon Cobra. They cleaned up just about every major race in the country, something had to give.....and it did. Severely humiliated, GM Holden (with Harry Firth's Help and guidance) turned there attention to the LX Torana which was a minor face lift of the LH but now included a hatchback to create the A9X Torana. Game set and match, nothing could catch it. Ford gave up and even Holden could'nt see the point anymore cos they were racing against privateers driving there products and pulled their team out. That was the Torana, gone but not forgotten. It did so much to challenge the way us Aussies thought about cars. I see that you are American. Maybe the Plymouth Duster was your Torana? Hugely popular, cheap to buy and run with economical six cylinder engines, but full on exiting with a 340 V8.

The 73 Bathurst XU-1 was a lot better handling car and quite a bit quicker than even the normal 73 XU-1 which ran the same camshaft as the 72 Bathurst cars. Id like to know why the Great Colin Bond didnt run the Webers in the way that Brocks Torana was set up, rather than the triple 2 inch SU’s. I was told his Torry kept running out of vacuum down Conrod so he would keep having to back off just that little bit. He went like a rocket going up the mountain though. He was easily just as good a driver as what Peter Brock was. And he had his head screwed on a couple of notches tighter too.

It's how it was done in the day. No nanny state safety car slowing the entire circuit so everybody can catch up. The race went on.

@@grumpycarlsworld Yep. Roger Williamson died at Zandvoort earlier that year and all they did was put a blanket over his burned out car and continued with the race. Medieval with modern eyes.

The film is credited to General Motors, so natural for it to be biased. The original upload of this to KZfaq has in the description "from the perspective of the Holden Team".

Maybe but thats Bathurst, it was a ambitious plan from Firth, that only Bondy got to the required laps easily because he wasn't racing anything, just circulating. Once pushed hard the plan failed, Webber's are quite thirsty, so no he wouldn't of won
