Superb Parrot Owners, what has been your experience owning these birds?
@WizardOfDarklands

I was looking forward to this video, but wasn't expecting it so soon! Awesome work, by the way: I own a 1 year old male and I think your remarks are spot on. If anything, I would say that while superb parrots aren't really "hyperactive" as, say, conures, they are SO curious and inquisitive that they can fall on the annoying spectrum. My parrot wants to know *everything* that's going on, so he likes to fly around like crazy, he comes to check whatever you're doing up close, and oh my, what a chatterbox. Mine isn't talking because neither my wife nor I are very talkative, and we aren't specifically training him to talk, but he won't stop chattering for a second, he even chatters in his sleep (luckily only while napping during the day, during the night he's quiet as a stone). As you said in an earlier video, it's important that the choice between parrot and owner goes both ways: my wife and I were initially looking for a cockatiel, but while we were in the pet shop, the cockatiels were mostly ignoring us, while the little green guy was walking around his cage like Spider-man just to check on us. How could we leave him there while he was trying to evade just to be with us? Superb parrot it is! Although I have to say we brought him home hand-raised for a lot cheaper, about $300 in Italy. As you said, he's not really cuddly (unless he's the one doing the cuddling), but what a ball of fun he is. :-)

I tried teaching mine to talk a couple times but he ended up just learning some wistles he heard arround the house. Also, when he wants something he is VERY loud, my ears hurt after 2 minutes, but heyyy he is cute, you know. He still doesn't let me to pet him but he comes on my hand if I put it in his front.. In general, I am very happy with him, if you want a cute parrot to play with he is the best decision! 😉

Agree very inquisitive and curious!! Mine is very affectionate, likes to preen me but doesn't like to be held or stroked. Whistles really well but no talking as yet. Gets a little bit of separation anxiety, can be happily playing with her toys on her own whilst you're in the same room . As soon as you leave she flies straight after you, no matter how quietly you sneak out!

@@ralphlonghorn5499 you have a whistling female? Interesting. I have a 1 year old male who doesn't do any melodic whistling at all. As for talking, he more or less says his name ("gwitchy" for Glitch, close enough) and... a blasphemous idiom in Italian which I swear he didn't learn from me or my wife. 😅 So it turns out he's a spontaneous curser and maybe we should call an exorcist, but I love him that way, with a touch of spontaneous evil (plus I'm an atheist so I only really mind it for other people). We got him a (very likely) female companion last week. She's so young she still walks with awkward steps, but she flies like a little helicopter! There have been some duels, but the more they measure their willpower, the more I think they'll end up getting along. It's going to be an interesting journey as Patch looks more curious, fearless and chatty than Glitch was when we brought him home one month older. It's going to be... the "Glitchy an Patchy Show" 😁

Definetly up there with cockatiels as the low-difficulty, low-noise parrots. Sadly they are really hard to find in some states / countries, whereas cockatiels are everywhere. Probably because Superb parrots are more picky for nest boxes ( bigger, vertical box ) and reach maturity much later ( 2 years ).

You should add a dust category. You did that video about old world vs new world parrots in terms of dust, but where do Australian birds fall in that dust category?
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty good idea actually. With this many reviews now, might be a bit late to add a category but I can mention it moving forward. Australian birds though can really vary. Cockatiels and Cockatoos are insanely dusty while Lorikeets are much more minimal. It really varies also by how often the bird bathes and how seasonal it is so it can be a bit difficult to tack on a direct score.

I am looking at rescuing a superb parrot which is about 2years old, the owner said he isn’t very friendly and said ‘I wont be able to cuddle him’ but a cuddly bird is really what I would prefer!:( Obviously the more I handle him the better he will get with me. But do you think this breed is easy enough trained? Thanks so much :)
@familhagaudir8561
@familhagaudir8561 10 ай бұрын
Late but maby this helps others : Superb parrots aren't cuddly. They can be trained to tolerate being touched, but it dosen't come naturally to adult superb parrots. Cockatiels are more cudly and as easy / low noise. They will come to you and ask for head-scratches. If you want a hands-on, easy parrot, this is the better option. Many small-ish parrots are alot more cuddly, but will be much, much louder : conures, lorikets, lovebirds, senegal / kaik, indian ringneck, galah parrot ( related to cockatiels ), small cockatoos, etc. But they are needy and loud. The larger parrots are not for everyone because they can inflict severe wounds, can get very jealous, need alot more time, cost ALOT, need formal training to teach them to control their bad behaviors, etc. The teenager rebel phase is tough. But they are usually all somewhat cudly when properly-trained. Large cockatoos will wreck your eardrums and can ger very agressive and needy even when compared to other large parrots. African greys and Amazons are likely to talk, make lots of loud noise, and want some cuddles. Relatively common as pets, unless you want one specific Amazon species, then you may have to look for a while. Large macaws are more manageable than large cockatoos. The most common large macaw is the Blue and Gold, to which other species gets compared for difficulty level. ( ex : scarlet macaws are usually more difficult to tame and bite more ). Eclectus are quieter and easier, but they need a special diet or they get sick and die early. So many species I forget.

Do you know if superb parrots can live in the same cage with a GC Conure? Are they about the same size?
@familhagaudir8561
@familhagaudir8561 10 ай бұрын
First, putting new birds in the same cage is always a risk of injury / death and must be supervized. It would have to be a pretty big cage too. If the cage already belonged to one of them, especially if it's the conure "owning" the cage, violence is likely. Superb parrots are larger than "ordinary" conures ( Patagonian conure is larger though ), but they are usually "nice and shy". Very much like a cockatiels. They let other birds walk over them. They can get along, but conure may bully the more timid Superb parrot. I would not recommend. In an aviary it would be okay.

You're going to need to spend a lot of time, it's not going to happen overnight. Start by spending more time near the parrot and having the cage near you as much as possible, then slowly interact through the cage. Over time, stick your hand in the cage but don't reach or touch the bird for periods of time letting it trust you won't hurt it. This can take months but with hard work, you can retame it.

It could happen. Sounds like you got an adult parrot from a neglectful previous owner. It could take longer but you just have to keep it up. Find out what the bird likes like a treat and learn positive reinforcement. If people can train wild lions to do tricks at the zoo, you can tame a parrot to be friendly. You got this!

While a beautiful parrot, the Superb Parrot is actually listed as a vulnerable species in Australia and is protected. This is due to loss of habitat from land clearing...and also from the birds and their eggs being taken for pets! Please ensure that all native Australian birds that you buy as a pet has been responsibly bred, and not taken from the wild. That includes parrots, cockatiels, and cockatoos.
