Supercomputer light bulb build - with schematic

This project is definitely only suited to experimenters with suitable mains voltage experience, as it involves high voltages.
It's the classic retro spaceship supercomputer effect, but in a convenient light bulb format.
Because the flashing LEDs go almost open circuit while unlit, the panel does need one standard LED in each parallel group to clamp the voltage to a safe level for the flashing LED.
I used the hard to get 0.5Hz LEDs here, but it will still look good with classic 1Hz ones.
Diffused LEDs give the most pleasant appearance.
I modified the capacitive dropper drive circuit to run at much lower power to give a more visual effect, since it doesn't need to light a room.
You could also use the slow RGB colour changing LEDs, as they seem to work OK in series circuits.
The lamp kits are available from AliExpress and sometimes from eBay, either with or without LEDs. They actually work out more expensive than fully built lamps from some sellers. You can get a range of sizes.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.c...
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Fun trick with "supercomputer" panels - heat or cool one corner before turning on - when you turn on, you see a wave moving across the board due to the effect of heat on the flash rate

Clive always got cool content. But taking what you posted and the visual of the lights at the start of this video as they blink on and off with varying brightness also reminds me of a (still theory) theory of time I made up several decades ago about “ what is time” if those LEDs were RGB and each shrunk down to a Planck scale size which is about the smallest hole/orb theoretically possible which not even quantum particles can pass through and if you gave each color of the RGB which combined creates white and when off creates black or darkness correlate density of brightness with a temperature as in dimmer is cooler brighter is hottest that would make that single board of 18x13 Planck scales wide which there is yet an instrument built capable of direct observation since there are no materials fine enough to make one from its effect can be observed and in turn proves time exist as a temporal effect of what is to this day being denied “ the aether” . I know what everyone’s thinking WTFs this guy talking about? Sorry . 😁 just saying time exists and the board serves as an example of what can’t be seen if those LEDs were as tiny as they can be , but if you could see it, maybe one day someone will after all we now have images of an actual atom but here’s my theoretical equation in layman’s term. The Planck hole will appear like a quasi crystal orb but that visual which like the first image of an atom will have more questions then answers because nobody can definitively confirm it’s not just an illusion.

Yay for leaded solder! The whole lead-free solder shenanigans are cow excrement. There's good reason aerospace, medical and military applications are exempt. I'd be willing to bet the amount of e-waste from premature failure due to lead-free solder more than offsets any ecological gains from using lead-free solder in the first place Nice to get that out of my system, thanks for reading ;)
@RFC-3514
@RFC-3514 Жыл бұрын
How many years of research have you done on that and, more importantly, how much would you be willing to bet? Also, are you taking any bets on leaded petrol?
@MicraHakkinen
@MicraHakkinen Жыл бұрын
@@RFC-3514 No research myself, just common sense, practical experience and reading others' research papers. Lead-free solder has (re)introduced many issues we don't currently have with leaded solder. Like I said, certain categories of electronics are exempt from the ban on leaded solder and that's simply because the use of lead-free solder causes a marked increase in the failure rate of electronics. Taking into consideration the absolutely miniscule amount of lead present in a complete device, the environmental benefits of using lead-free solder are marginal at best. Meanwhile the aforementioned increased failure rate generates more e-waste than if we'd continued to use leaded solder. So now we have a larger pile of trash, just with less lead in it. Regarding leaded petrol, what kind of a weird comparison is that? Of course leaded petrol is horrible and it's a good thing we (finally) got rid of it. But unless you plan to run your car on leaded solder, it won't be combusted throughout our streets and cities to then be inhaled or ingested by anyone. Unless you're worried about the burning of e-waste, but that's something that needs to be addressed by better recycling and waste management, not by making it slightly less bad by banning leaded solder, that's just gesture politics.
@bigclivedotcom

Leaded petrol was a completely different thing. Genuinely airborne lead smog as opposed to solid blobs firmly attached to a PCB.

What also helps to hide the static LEDs is that the flashing LEDs draw current away from them when they're on, so they vary in brightness too even if they never turn fully off. In fact if you were to do a multicoloured one you could have them all flashing if the static LEDs had a higher forward voltage than the flashing ones.
@foogod4237
@foogod4237 Жыл бұрын
I was actually thinking the same thing.. if you used static LEDs with a higher forward voltage, then when either of the flashing ones turned on, it would drop the voltage below the static LED's cutoff and the "static" LED would turn off, so they would only turn on when both of the others were off. Might take some work to find a combination of static and blinking LEDs with the right relative voltages, though... You could also use all blinking LEDs, but solder some zeners to the back to ensure if they were all off that the voltage didn't go too high. (or you might be able to get away with just some resistors, I'm not sure)

I found a nice second use for the bright white plastic tubs "Philly" (Philadelphia cream cheese) comes in -- they are great containers for the screws and small bits of devices I'm repairing, and they are also great for the electronic components from DIY kits. The tub is bright white, so even small components stand out and are easy to see. And if a project is delayed, closing the lid means no part falls out and disappears in the depths of the carpet... Looking at the start of the video, maybe you should give this a try? (Any brightly-coloured empty container with a lid will do, of course.)

I have dismembered a number of "dead" led bulbs and I've noticed that it's never the cobs that have gone. It's always a larger component. Which makes me wonder - surely they would be repairable if they were not so glued together( obviously the manufacturers don't want you repairing your bulbs, they want to you spend £5 to £8 on a new one ). So the kits might be worth it because you CAN replace all the electronics if necessary.

Once you get a feel for how it flows, you can be just as productive with leadfree. And no, we're not all going to die from using a bit of leaded solder here and there. No one is saying that. It's about the cumulative effect of all lead in our electronic waste and making a small effort to try to reduce that. Anyway, that's a cool little project. I'm going to look into this lamp kit.

You can use all flashing LEDs but you need to add a small electrolytic onto each triplet to even out the flashing, you get brighter flashing as the instantaneous voltage is higher, I used to use flashing LEDs as very low rate baud clock generators for signalling over V21 DC to 300 baud modems and leased lines for burglar alarms and access control, it's cheaper to use a flashing led than using a multivibrator as the generator but adding a cap solves the problem with the switching to off

? surely you'd need a zener across them in case of all leds going 'open' at the same time?

Assembly complete, powered up, does the super-computer develop it's own holographic electron interference memory or is there a plasma-gel over-lay installed later? ;-)

Is it possible to build an LED 4x4x4 or 16x16x16 cube with Flashing or colour changing LEDs ? Most ones use an Arduino to control the flashing, but if it could be done passively and have them all randomly stray away would truly create a random pattern.

That’s rather lovely, Clive! I find myself pondering how one of your light-catching 3D prints might look over that, although I’m unsure what shape.

For more fun use some of those RGB fading or strobing LEDS. The colours eventually drift over time

Can you imagine in the old days they had to build very expensive Super Computers to get those flashing lights and now you can have the same for a couple of bucks. Times are really evolving

I'm sure all the B-movie computers were just a bunch of off the shelf panel lamps (probably incandescent) and a commercial sign controller.

Really great idea. Wouldn't mind having something like this. Unfortunately, I'm no DIY electronics guy. Now about that lamp case, were these slightly bigger, one could put a proper SMPSU in there instead of a cheap capacitive dropper. Wouldn't need to rely on your load to regulate voltage.
@andygozzo72
@andygozzo72 Жыл бұрын
you could, but capacitive droppers are ok, you could clamp the voltage with a zener, smpus too 'noisy' in terms of interference, and more likely to fail ,,

Hi Clive. I've just been asked to give my opinion on microwave kilns for firing small ceramic/glass/metallic clay objects. I'd never heard of this until today, and have given what I think are a series of sensible warnings: "Right - I've formed an opinion on the microwave kiln. It appears they do work. The liner absorbs the microwaves and re-emits thermally in the interior. that's the good news. The bad news is that it looks inherently dangerous. I would suggest the following precautions... 1. Keep the cat away from it 2. Don't use your good microwave; get a charity-shop one or something 3. Do the actual firing out on the outdoors 4. Don't be near it when it's firing 5. Use kiln-gloves 6. Make sure you're fully covered up with long-sleeves and trousers, and with fully closed shoes. 7. Make sure you've got somewhere to put it down to cool I don't expect the microwave to have a long life. The kilns themselves look difficult to handle" but ultimately my opinion is based on not-very-much. You're my go-to guy for this kind of thing. What do you think? Fancy giving one a bash?

What if you made the bottom ones dimmer and top ones brighter i think that would be awesomr fire like effect, maybe make a sun thats brighter in middle but dimmer around like aura, maybe even always on center!
