I did a campaign for Shadowrun on the basis of 1999 movie "The Ninth Gate" with grimoires and a nice ritual at the end. Doing something like that in DnD would be even better! Lots of interaction and research in finding the darn things, every book it's own task with specific problems. Another party looking for the same things, maybe in another order. Possibilities are endless.

@@SupergeekMikeGotta follow this video up with the quintessential D&D adventure movie -- The Mummy (1999). To me, that movie always felt like a DM trying to write out this tragic, dramatic story with intense horror elements but at the same time understood that their players really just want to go on a ridiculous adventure, kill monsters and have fun. Sometimes the tragic love story you've set up with your villain will be overshadowed by your players quite literally running and gunning down monsters in the final dungeon.

To be fair, lesser/younger vampires dying due to the death of their creator wasn't an entirely new concept when this movie came out. Two examples I can think of are the ghouls in Hellsing and the vampires in The Vampire Chronicles (although in that series it's the death of a single vampire that basically holds the 'core' of their species). And now I am absolutely going to go make up a campaign/setting to match the ideas presented here.

@@randomim42 I was impressed that something 26 years older than dracula managed to portray the female leads without being caricatures, and give us two, almost three different stories about her woven together in a sort of mystery format with scenes that would fit in a modern horror movie. I'm planning to homebrew a D&D alternative to ravenloft/Curse of Strahd to Carmilla instead.

@@RovingJack not just that but also queer leads. It was alot of fun, and I also kinda love how Carmilla is as a vampire too? In my campaign, I'm going to let my players discover that the only thing that's ever hurt the BBEG was a weapon wielded by a paladin who died during the war. They will then find the weapon, and I'll drop the tidbit that it needs to be filled with spiritual energy of some sort to be powered, either by a paladin or cleric's bond to their God, or by a Hexblade Warlock channeling their patron into the weapon. Should hopefully lead to some character choices as characters see who's willing to go the distance for the greater good.

My brother and I used to ride our bikes all around town as kids, and we’d stop at this one pizza shop for lunch since we’d be out all day. I remember for some reason this pizza place just ALWAYS had TBS on and there was coincidentally ALWAYS a Van Hellsing rerun when we’d be sitting down and eating, so we’d always sit and watch the rest. So this movie will always hold a special place in my heart despite how utterly awful it is. Only last year did I complete my first campaign as a DND player, and it WAS Curse of Strahd. Not only had my DM taken a lot of inspiration from the Van Hellsing film, but much of what you’ve said can be applied to a CoS game was done effectively in ours. I’ll post a comment with some specifics later This was an awesome video like always, but I do have one teeny tiny bit of criticism: some of the humor in this video was a little bit forced; I love both your content and GFG’s but some of the jokes in this video (at least delivery wise) felt pretty jarring to the videos pace, particularly the one that was something along the lines of “Oh don’t even get me started on how Daredevil [so and so]...” it just really clashed with your normal delivery, even compared to the funnier jokes you DID deliver in this video (like the pause followed by that dry “...It’s not a good movie.” Which I genuinely thought was a funny delivery) Idk I think my putting a whole two paragraphs to addressing this ONE LITTLE thing is way overboard on my part, but I guess I want to give sincere feedback because you’ve been doing so well as a beginning channel and you respond really well to the feedback you have received. I look forward to the next video!

my current campaign revolves around killing an immortal king who achieved immortality with the help of his court alchemist. The king is unkillable without a weapon that was forged with the blood of the alchemist (he put it in the potion as a safeguard) so the entire campaign is the players trying to find a living relative, obviously they are running into side quests along the way. what they don't know is, the Cleric is the last living relative, i can't wait to spring that on them.

Alright, so I actually just started a campaign with some of my friends a few months ago after my girlfriend had been running one with us for almost a year at that point. I had just re-watched some of my childhood favorites (like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lon Chaney's "Wolfman", The Mummy, ect.) and had gained some gothic inspiration. Then one of my players said he wanted to play a monster hunter like Van Helsing. I hadn't seen the film, but I'm a big Hugh Jackman fan so I sat down and watched the cartoon and movie in one night to get an idea of the character he wanted to play. Long story short, this video kinda summarizes the best ideas I took from it, and points out SO MANY more great ideas to go through. I think it's a wonderful source of inspiration, and you guys did an incredible job breaking it all down. I will totally be rewatching this video as my campaign moves forward and they start to piece together the plot I'm weaving. Now I'm off to go watch the other half! Thanks for another incredible video Mr. Mike! P.S. this channel is one of the main reasons I started DMing. My girlfriend has been doing it for a while, and I was very intimidated, but she introduced me to your channel, and through your videos I gained a lot of knowledge and tips on how to run the best DnD game I can! So, thank you again for all the help I hope you know you've been.

Funnily enough, I’ve seen this movie twice in the last month, once cause I chose to and once because it was on some movie channel for Halloween. And while I wouldn’t call it a cinematic masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, it’s a nice popcorn flick to turn the brain off for an hour and half. I did get some very DnD vibes from the movie as I watched though. Especially the final battle that seemed to go on way too long to just be 12 tolls, like you said. I think my biggest hang up with the movie is there are numerous times where the story could have ended much sooner of the vampires weren’t so damned dramatic 😂😂😂 Just bite/kill them already!

I also have a particular distaste for a bad guy leering and saying “Next time you have a chance to kill someone, don’t hesitate!” And then the hero kills them and says “Thanks for the advice.” Die Hard was clever when they did it, we never need anyone to do it again, but I’ve seen it two or three times in the past month (including this film) and I just… hate it now.

Very nice ideas here. ^u^ Also, not sure if I'd call the movie a guilty pleasure, but I DO unironically like this movie. Sure it's cheesey, but I feel like this movie IS one of the better modern takes of adapting the Universal Monsters mythos. Plus all the designs are kick-@$$ in my opinion. As far as how Dracula and his brides travel around, Anna actually says it in the movie in the scene when they were going over all the evidence to look for the door, after Dracula was banished, the Devil gave him wings. And to explain the werewolf at Castle Dracula thing, I'm not entirely sure. As far as Van Helsing being a werewolf, they do honestly have hints as to what's going on. Dracula mentions it's hard to control a werewolf during their first full moon, meaning that the person under the curse is doing their best to fight against whatever control there is over them. Especially if Dracula can hypnotize the werewolf along the same lines as he did with Anna at the masquerade party. Plus Van Helsing being the Left Hand of God in this instance is also probably giving him an extra boost, as noted by the cross symbol on his chest when in werewolf form if you look close enough. Also side note, speaking of Bram Stoker's Dracula, I actually came across a tumblr post that points out the idea of vampires being destroyed by sunlight or not being able to cross rivers to be false. The original source for it was looking into the scene in Netflix's Castlevania series where some of Dracula's generals and top men discuss the idea of vampires and running water (then later on of course showing an undead priest being able to bless the water). The post is called "Can running water hurt Dracula?" by "thenightling". The post basically broke down the two ideas being sort of actually false facts people assume about vampires, the former being only a visual metaphor and the latter actually being a weakness of ghosts.

Idea for the sun sword. You could have the Sword do damage to them dealt to them through either healing or everytime they hit strahd with it & if they die then they will become a fiend bound to either a demon lord or arch fiend or maybe even a god that was crossed by Strahd who made a deal with them & is why they are a vampire. Just don't tell the party this just tell the player using it about the damage & that Asmodeus or whatever fiend is talking to them through the sword. Maybe they find that making it a sun sword was a reuse & a way the fiend was trying to cut loses by killing the deal breaker well getting a new servant

There is one problem with Gothic Horror in D&D. In Horror the characters are victims of circumstance. In D&D they are super heroes in plate armour. You can't have Gothic Horror with Paladins with truck loads of HP, abilities to smite undead, and a frickin' Sunblades. If I were to run CoS as part of a campaign, I would have the PCs appear on the other side of The Mist dressed in period Barovian clothes at 1st level, and we start from scratch.

Usernames generally consist of “text me on telegram” and then the channel name their impersonating and use the impersonated channel’s pfp and say the person they are replying to has won something

Oof yeah I’ve heard a bit about this! As far as I know it hasn’t happened in my comments yet but I’ll still mention it in my next video just in case

They killed Anna off because she was a much better and stronger character than Jackman's. Gotta keep the InCels happy.
