They deliberately put that scene in there to show people what will most likely happen if you were to do what Dave just did there. Everything after this is just plot armor.

They were doing nothing except making some graffitis on a wall, and he thinks that's serious enough to beat them...😆 He is the one who throws the first punch... despite the guys saying to him to get away from them

Being a super hero is a big risk wearing a custom is nothing you have to be trained well like fighting skills and parkour and Being fast to protect yourself from knifes and bottles before you do anything you have to know the expectations

I kinda wish they kept one of three things from the comics in this scene. Dave's racism/homophobia Dave swinging first Or the crime being smaller(It was minor vandalism in the comic) I think it hammers in the message that Dave is a bit delusional with his toxic idea of what a Superhero should be. His first act as a superhero was just him harassing a group of teens around his age for doing something that would really just get them a fine at most but he went as far as thinking they needed to get a beating. It sorta felt like the movie didn't want Dave to look bad so he couldn't be the instigator even though the point is that his first "act of heroism" really just results in him handling a situation like a tool and suffering from the consequences of his own actions. Just keep him swinging first or the crime minor and remove the racism/homophobia so he isn't completely unlikable to movie goers.

You’re right, I think Dave would have been too unlikeable if he was truly like in the comic, they probably wanted to play it safe for the big screen🤷‍♂️
