The Queen Creek tunnel was part of the new road which began construction in 1948 and was finished in 1952. The rock had to be blasted for months to create the new tunnel.

The Claypool Tunnel is 22' wide presently. I've measured it. When we used it in the 40s and 50s it was a good 25' wide. Semi trucks had trouble but semis weren't as big then as they are now.

The mine in Superior is shut down. Drift number 9 is up near Oak Flats and Resolution Mining is trying against all kinds of opposition to open it up.
@reavisfranklin7727
@reavisfranklin7727 7 ай бұрын
That old building up there is the mine cooling tower. Where you're headed is to Resolution Copper's main office which used to be the Magma Copper Company hospital. Magma operated the mine from way back in the 30s thanks to one William Boyce Thompson who built the Picket Post House and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum around it.

The Hotel Magma and the MacPherson Hotel Magma are the same hotel. It was abandoned in the 70s and the Chilean bought it and restored it in the early 2000s.

I can remember. when I was very young, crossing the '49 bridge on our way to northern Arizona. Sometimes, my dad would just stop in the middle (no traffic) so we could look over the edge. I thought it was so fun! But my mom hated it and would yell at my dad to get us off that "death trap."
