My god, Reeve is just so damn good as Supes. He plays Clark, Superman, Kal-El as 3 different personalities. His speech pattern, body language, the whole nine. There will never be an actor who captures that essence nearly as much as him.

He was always tall & great looking but he was so so thin just a regular tall lanky kid as hrs only 24 here. They filmed all this in 77 & reeve was born the very end of 52 in late Dec so to go from like 160 to 240 of pure muscle is incredible. He also had blonde hair they dyed black which looks great w/ those blue eyes. Geez sorry he was so talented so gorgeous so young & for what happened to him is so tragic. I ll keep it upbeat I agree he really plays superman clark amazing & u make a great point rarely did we see kal el as regular kryptonisn only in talking to his dad or mom in lesters version.

@@sandal_thong8631 The 90s TV series was all about Clark wanting to be loved as the real person, so while Lois was into Superman and hostile or indifferent to Clark, even though Clark loved/wanted her, he kind of kept his distance, and didn't tell her the secret, until she became friends with and then willing to date Clark. And that Lois had NO clue about the double life, even as she couldn't figure out why, if Clark Kent wanted a relationship with her, he kept disappearing. Here, it does feel like Lois is in love with the Superman persona and disillusioned once de-powered Clark gets beat up. She seemed to see Clark as just a cover for Superman - although watching some of these clips again I wonder if Clark really sees it that way.

Superman 2 is basically the Last Temptation of Superman: Superman gives up his powers in order to live with the human woman he loves, but discovers he can't have that life soon enough. This scene is from the Donner Cut, filmed in 1977 but only assembled for released in 2006. It's a little clunky - you can tell they needed a stand-in for the depowering itself (it was never filmed for this cut) - but still starkly different in feel to the scene that ended-up in the theatrical release of "Superman 2", where Superman talks to his mother instead of his father about his sincere love for Lois Lane. Instead, it feels more (tonally) like the first Superman film and the scenes with Jor-El in them.

His father re-educated him, although Clark had an OK upbringing, not being cruel, selfish or vain. After he realizes he made a mistake, his father gives him one more chance, but then pretty much says, "I've taught you enough, time to be your own man."

I liked both versions of this scene equally. Susannah York also did an outstanding job as Kal-El's mother, even though her role was small. Her delivery resonated as well as Brando's. But the Donner cut was interesting for revealing Kal-El's true feelings about not wanting to be in service to humanity forever.

I liked _Supergirl_ starring Helen Slater, and wondered how that would go forward with Jimmy learning Superman's identity and Superman learning about his people alive in Innerspace (Argo City). I imagine they could have done a movie where Brainiac takes a city from Krypton (Kandor) so there's even more of his people alive somewhere. Another version in the comics has him mating with Wonder Woman, although they don't seem to be a married couple.

Such an awesome scene and the Donner Cut team did a great job putting this together. The theatrical version (Richard Lester) with Lara is also excellent, with arguably better dialog, a more mature-looking Christopher Reeve, and a wonderful detail of Lara stepping out of the crystal. Everything also looks much more polished, plus it features Lois/Margot Kidder, which Donner hadn't yet shot for this scene. However, THIS version is the best because it's father, not mother. This whole conversation MUST be with his father! I don't care about pay disputes, the decision to cut Jor-El/Brando out of the movie was SO stupid, since it's all about him, really! Kal-El is to Superman what God is to Jesus. Another detail I love about this one is that moment at the end when Jor-El looks up at Lois. It's chilling, because up until that point you don't think the hologram is even aware of her, but there's actually a look of judgement! Scary stuff! Amazing film! :-)
@timetheory845 күн бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head. The re-shot stuff in the Lester version is more effective and seems to have more energy than this version. Perhaps Donner would have perfected it if he hadn't been fired. I also prefer many other scenes in Lester's version to the Donner. And honestly, Reeve's performance seems much better in the Lester version.

Christopher Reeve was such an underrated actor. Look at this scene and the one in the theatrical cut back to back. Despite the dialogue being very similar, Reeve finds a way to add different textures to each interaction: with Jor El his “father… I love her!” Line is very pointed and defiant, as he knows his father is trying to scare him and dissuade him. While the line “mother… I love her.” Is said with such sweetness and warmth, as Lara is more frightened for him.

Not likely. It's been theorized that the crystal chamber also harnessed molecular and celluar alteration technology specifically targeted at Kryptonia DNA, changing him into a human on a molecular, cellular, and genetic level. It serves that this was the only way he could even _concieve- of a child with Lois in _Superman Returns_ , but the latent Kryptonian genes were expressed, which accounted for Lois son being both sickly [ weak gene structure from the two combating each other, leaving him suscpetable to illness] and his odd bursts of super strength under stress. Then again, that could have just been poorly written.....
@Shenruss6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, the animation was impressive for the time. It indicated, however, that Superman wasn;t just having yellow sun energy drawn from him, but being changed on a molecular level, both in terms of density, and in terms of genetic structure. No, I think the Donnor cut also showed this was a highly specific change, in thaat it was the last physical embodiment of _Jor-El's_ life energy that allowed superman to change back. Now, this inference you make _could_ possibly be seen in the _Smallville_ universe; humans were "Empowered" via Kryptonian life force on a handful of occasions. However, that empowerment was more of an personal life force energy/energy field transfer, and was only temporary; apparently a human baody isn't significantly advanced enough to sustain Kryptonian powers, contain them for a lengthy period of time, or use them to their full capacity

I read the script today for Superman II from 1977 and the best part that was cut was his interactions with Jor-el. Runner up would be the burning of Tokyo and Moscow. Third is the kid is about to fall over Niagara Falls in a rowboat, not fall for 30 seconds. Even the Donner version needed some rewrites. After catching a bullet in _Superman,_ he should be able to tell the gun held blanks. Hit him with a crowbar or try to cut him in his sleep. It would have had Clark and Lois kissing to practice for the Kissing Contest mentioned. Also Clark walks in on her coming out the shower. Fortunately they moved the Leaning Tower of Pisa scenes to _Superman III._

I always wondered how did he and Lois get back to civilization after this. I know they pulled up to the diner in a car after this but it's quite a long trek to get to any main road or even a road trucks would use in the Artic. I guess maybe the Artic Patrol shown in the deleted scene near the end of the movie got them back to civilization. Also people commenting about Lara and which is the better version of this scene. What you have to understand is that Superman and Superman 2 are one complete movie/story arc. If you watch the scene on Krypton when Jor-El tells Kal-El that the son becomes the father and the father the son then this scene makes more sense in context. As Donner said in the DVD Commentary it was never about the mother when talking about this scene in Lester's version. Even in the original shooting script the two movies were always about the relationship between Kal-El and Jor-El.

I got one. How about Joe Anoa'i? He's not an actor, at least not in the Hollywood sense yet. He's a gorgeous Samoan professional wrestler in WWE. Most people know him by his ring name Roman Reigns. A lot of his female fans on the reading/writing app Wattpad do fan fiction stories about him, and in about nine out of every ten fics I've read about him on that app the writer has his love interest in the story affectionately call him "Superman". It's because one of his moves in the ring happens to be called a "Superman Punch", so a lot of fangirls call him that in their books they write about him. Coincidentally, Joe's personality is similar to Kal-El's just like Chris's was.
