Thank you... ALL! For telling us that wasn't Jaws. 😉 Also, seeing a lot of people commenting about why we watched this cut over the Theatrical cut. We had a poll a couple weeks ago with nearly 4,500 votes. The Donner Cut won handily with 71% of the votes. Which is roughly the amount of filming that Donner finished. 😁The Richard Donner Cut is also the most widely available version to buy on home media right now. It was in the sets at both Wal-Mart & Target we looked at the weekend before watching this. I've had all cuts of the film in my library for a while. Also, we learned that there is a second version of the Donner Cut with about 5 minutes more footage, most of which was actually shot by Lester. This is the version you get when you buy it digitally on Amazon/Vudu/etc.

I enjoyed the Donner cut. It never ceases to amaze me that the producers wouldn’t bring Richard Donner back to finish the film. Especially after the box-office success that the original was. Just a side note: Steven Spielberg was their first choice having scored a huge hit with (wait for it) JAWS! Ironic huh? He declined because he was getting close encounters ready. Guy Hamilton was another choice that would have been good too. He directed, Goldfinger, The Battle of Britain (which I love) and The Spy Who Loved Me. All very good action films but Superman was Donners best film IMO. Thanks!

I think it was cool to watch this one first. But I would watch the theatrical Superman II before you move on to Superman III. For what it's worth, Superman III was made as the canonical sequel to the theatrical Superman II. So you kind of need to watch it next to stay straight on the canon of the original films. Also, you get a lot of new Margot Kidder scenes in the theatrical cut. The different intro, different ending, and different scenes at the hotel all add a lot of Kidder, which the Mrs. should enjoy.

That's a shame because the Theatrical Cut is far better. And, it doesn't have those jarringly mismatched scenes. Lastly, the scenes when Lois discovers Superman's identity, and when she realizes she can't be with him, are emotionally devastating in the Theatrical Cut; not so much in the Donner cut.

“Non” was played by Jack O’Halloran. He was a real heavyweight boxer in the 60s and 70s. He fought George Foreman among others. JAWS was played by Richard Kiel and was in quite a few movies starting in the early 1960s.

Yes! I was going to mention the same thing. Both versions have good and bad things about them so I find it tough to choose one over the other. I just thank the movie gods that we get to see both versions. There is lots of deleted content from other movies that was destroyed or lost by the studios. Kubrick's deleted scenes are a good example. Another would be the extra gore in some of the Friday the 13th films. Cheers.

The ending made more sense in the theatrical version because spinning the earth backwards would not erase anyone's memories. In the 1st film, Lois and Jimmy still remembered the earthquake in California and the government is still aware that Lex Luthor sabotaged the 2 nuclear missiles which is why he's in prison with Otis. Plus, Superman would not go back to the diner and pick a fight with the bully if he knew that the bully had no memory of him. I wish the movie had kept the "would you care to step outside" line and Superman carrying the american flag to the white house.

Fun fact: The artificial snow used in the fortress scenes was sea salt. It was so corrosive that it ate through the shoes of everyone who stepped on the set. -Marlon Brando left the film along with Richard Donner, so in the theatrical version, it was Lar-el (mother of Supes) to interact with out heroes. -Sarah Douglas wasn't *completely* comfortable with Gene basically spooning her during the flight scene, hence her throwing him to the ground when they arrive at the fortress. -Jackie Cooper (Perry White) was part of the *original* little rascals. He even played Spanky's older brother in some episodes. -Terrance Stamp (Zod) played the voice of Jor-el in the Smallville series. Personally I liked the opening setup, the Brando moments and certain fight scenes in this version more *BUT* I like the personal moments and ending of the theatrical version better.

Ilya Salkind stated they didn't bring her back for Superman III except for a small part because they wanted to go in a different direction with Lana Lang instead as the Salkinds and Lester thought the whole Superman and Lois story was played out. Hackman only came back to do Superman IV at the behest of Christopher Reeve. Same with the rest of the supporting cast of the first two films. Too bad Cannon Films screwed them all over with a subpar film.

The one scene that doesn't make any sense is the second time Clark goes to the diner. In the Richard Lester version time wasn't reversed and Zod and gang stayed in the pit, the fortress of solitude wasn't destroyed and Superman only took the memory from Lois so she wouldn't be a nervous wreck and Superman as Clark went back to the diner to settle the score. However in the Donner Cut Superman reversed everything so everyone at the diner wouldn't know him or the initial fight and so it was extremely petty of Superman to fight a guy who now has no idea who he is. And the owner of the diner wouldn't get the reference to Clark saying he's been working out.

@@mcentepede There's still a perfect cut to be made putting them the best of the two together. Like I would keep the Niagara fall scene instead of the falling from the building one. I always loved Superman 2 but when I saw Jor-El giving Superman back his power by touching him in the DC, I was astounded. I could not believe they had removed that from the TC. So freaking great. But given the whole time travel thing like the first movie, made of lot of plot points in the Donner cut, not make any sense. The theatrical cut makes things progress better. Like, the guy at the diner he goes back to beat up. What happened to Zod, Ursa and Non now, now that he reversed time. Let alone the silly scene where Lois "shoots" Clark to expose his secret. He's so fast, he would've seen it was a blank bullet and not worry about, "you know, if you were wrong, Clark Kent would be dead now." Like wtf. It was a brilliant idea to think about, but if you really think about it, it's not. Like Rocky V. How would Rocky know to mispronounce Cajones, unless he knew how to spell it? 🤷😂

I highly suggest you eventually watch the theatrical version of Superman II so you can see the major differences between the two versions. WB gave Michael Thau a rather limited budget to work with to finish this version more or less and it shows quite a bit. That being said it's still a pretty good movie. Be prepared for the drop in quality when you watch Superman III. It's got some moments here and there that are good but it's not up to par with 1 and 2. Superman IV is mediocre but it definitely helps to read up on all the BS that went on behind the scenes and you'll realize it's a miracle that film even got released (whether it should have or not is up for debate still).

The Donner Cut could only change some of the studios insisted changes. Originally, time wasnt rewound at the end of the first movie, California was badly damaged, and further damage then caused by Zod in the sequel. So Superman rewound time not to just put Zod back in the Phantom Zone but to restore Earth. SM1 and 2 were originally very much Pt1 and Pt2 of a single narative, but the studio got cold feet, and were afraid an 'incomplete' first Superman movie would prove unpopular, so it was reworked to have a 'comfy' ending.

I prefer the theatrical cut also. The Donner cut just seems to add some unnecessary scenes that take away from the overall picture. And the replacement sections are not better to me, they are far inferior. That is one reason I think she said it doesn't make sense about the reversing time part. I have to admit that I prefer the theatrical release of most movies. There is a reason they have editors. The only one I think is better is Lord of the Rings; because there is so much story that it makes more sense with more time.

@@fjparasite1172 As most are aware I'm sure, Reeve's performances as Superman and Clark are so different - that Clark really is a complete disguise. The set up of Donner's films (and pre crisis comics) lends itself to that too. The real Clark Kent pretty much ceases to exist after leaving Smallville. This is opposed to the post-crisis comics and most modern interpretations where Clark is a fully formed person with a full adolescence and formative years before deciding to become Superman.

@@0PsychosisMedia0 Here, Donner fell out with the producers, who really were a bit of a troublesome pair. It wasn't 'studio interference' as we tend to get these days. The major differences in story are the result of a couple of things. The time travel at the end of the first film was intended for 2, but used in 1 to wrap it up so that they were ready for release while Donner and Reeve and the 2nd unit kept filming sequences for 2. After Donner left, the producers didn't want to pay him so needed to reduce his number of credited scenes dramatically. The Newman's rewrote and Lester was bought in to work quickly and do as he was told. As I say, I do prefer the theatrical. The Donner Cut is an interesting addition, and I was certainly excited to see it. All that said, I do like Lester's work - and I especially like Superman 3. Where Donner absolutely nailed Superman The Movie, pioneering some amazing techniques, providing some pretty perfect casting and giving us his vision of period verisimilitude as he liked to say; Superman III is a near perfect on-screen depiction of Silver Age nonsense. When I had read the information off Superman Cinema (archived on Caped Wonder) my once love for the sequel really was diminished until Michael Thau went back to the drawing board to put the Donner puzzle back together.
