I don't think it was so much that Superman destroyed the city that was the issue, it's that Synder's version of Superman just didn't really seem to care all that much about anyone other than Lois. It was the emotional whiplash of the thousands of unnamed Metropolis humans being killed in their battle without note and without any reaction from Supes, and yet he freaked out when he was (ostensibly) forced to kill Zod. This was also after two hours of a mopey, sad, entitled, emo Superman who seemed like he only saved people because he felt obligated to, not because he genuinely cares about human life. That was the criticism.

In Christopher Reeve's Superman II, while Superman was fighting Zod, he chose to escape because he saw that he could harm the people of the metropolis. Superman was always aware that he lived in a cardboard world. Synder's version of Superman, on the other hand, appealed to a new generation of moviegoers and was based on action. An uncharacteristic execution is more appealing than victory brought about by a planned surrender combined with a tactical retreat.

@@__M7MD I never said he wasn't. You seem to be failing to understand so I'm going to clear it up for you. If you see a being like Godzilla, a giant lizard that is taller than buildings, and it turns out that this monster is a good guy, you're happy. This thing can destroy cities while just walking, so while there was a lot of damage, he was a giant monster, facing other giant monsters. When you have someone like Superman, that you know is a hero, and they are fighting other people sized beings and manage to destroy a city in the process, that's less reassuring. Especially because if Superman just dealt with them before they got to Earth as HISHE pointed out, then it would have never happened. Godzilla couldn't really deal with the MUTOs ahead of when he dealt with them.

What’s funny is it wasn’t Superman’s fault that the city got wrecked. Zod wasn’t going to take the battle outside the city anyway and he was just as strong as Superman.

Superman never tried to avoid getting to that point though. We expect this from Zod, but Superman is supposed to be the hero and yet never tried to deesculate the situation.

The difference is that Godzilla is a giant lizard fighting another giant monster, he can’t push the fight away from the city, and he can’t exactly be careful Meanwhile Superman probably could’ve pushed his fight with Zod away from the city, and safely fought somewhere else
