This was probably a tough cut. Maybe one of the toughest cuts they made. I believe it was restored for the DVD release that added eight minutes to the runtime. The theatrical release runs 2 hours and 23 minutes. The other version I reference goes 2 hours and 31 minutes and was Donner’s favorite version of the movie. That other version is available for digital purchase and is labeled “Superman: The Movie-Special Edition.”

Just watched the 2000 restoration of this movie again the other night. From what I've researched about Gas Giant stars, it takes millions of years to get to gas giant status, sometimes later on there are some weird periods of heating and then recooling, depending on the hydrogen helium mix going on at a given time, late in the life cycle, then eventually once that core collapses it goes Supernova and explodes. But the process of it actually going nova is relatively fast compared to the millions of years build up to it. There would have been distinctive signs months or a few years ahead of this that should have tipped them off to leave Krypton and find a new planet. I know it's from a comic book but still! Wouldn't the heat and radiation from the gas giant already have killed off all life on Krypton before the star goes nova? Anyway, this is one of my favorite movies of all time since I first saw it opening week at a theater in Florida in 1978. Just seeing those cool opening titles was enough to know it was going to be a great movie.

+horaciosi that doesn't even make sense. The Kryton in Man of Steel actually had MORE colour than this ice city of whites, black and occasional reds. It had forests and skies and fauna. Both versions are great in their own right. I really detest all this fanboyism and hate for modern interpretations. It's pointless and baseless. But I guess you have a right to your opinion, but I just don't see the point in bashing one over the other when they are deliberately different...
@VampireYoshi
@VampireYoshi 7 жыл бұрын
I think they meant that the new Krypton was made much more Earth-like, which they see as "generic" in that it resembles our world far more than the extremely alien, crystalline, and frankly "detached and cerebral" look that the 1978 Krypton had. Between the two, I tend to prefer the 1978, simply because it feels more mysterious. But to each their own. ... Except when it comes to the Kryptonian alphabet/language. In THAT area, the 2000 DC Comics-released substitution font was absolutely unquestionably the best, and the basis for the more-than-fan project that continues to this day at the website kryptonian.info . The stuff seen in "Man of Steel" is a considerable step backward, so far as Kryptonian conlang is concerned.

This isn't a deleted scene, it's more of an extended one. All spoken comments about the Phantom Zone, the comment about Jorel being on of Krypton's greatest scientists, the closeups of the spinning gizmo at the beginning & end of the scene are all added to this cut and not in original film. The original film has an alternate opening line off camera of Jorel saying 'you cannot ignore these facts' and then cutting to him saying 'it's suicide!...'. There are also (in original film) different takes of Vonda saying she doesn't question Jorel's data, and a silent reaction from the lead councilman after Jorel comments about being accused of insurrection. OK, I'm done. that should be it :)

This is cool to watch after reading the Last Days of Krypton Book (Kevin J Anderson), it details this visual version of Krypton more than any other in terms of the clothing/hair styles & colors of Jor-El, Zod and the rest. Fun to read the alt-universe 'Soviet Superman' comic Red Son after that to see how things might've been. But for me, Brando will always be Jor-El and the dude that played Zod in these flicks is my fav one. I actually really liked Spacey as Lex in that otherwise bad movie but Hackman is still my fav too lol

Marlon Brando is like the scientists trying to warn a Republican government about the dangers of global warming. The parallel is chilling. Needless to say, Krypton blows up a few minutes later

Funny, I just posted that as a reply to another comment! Also, in the news this week is the Indian lady dying who spoke at the Academy Awards on behalf of Marlon Brando (The Godfather) not accepting the award because of how badly Native Americans were treated in movies and TV.

I need info friends.... do you know the version that had the extended scenes of the following? 1. The saving the cat from the tree. There's an extended moment (scene) where he's talking to the girl for a little bit ,I think she was talking to superman about punishing her cat for going up there and they had a little discussion and I think I only saw it on TV. The one they have on the DVD they cut the conversation off. 2. On air force one scene when the pilots are talking before it's hit by lightening, they are talking about the President and giving him food and complaining about what he wanted or something across those lines. 3. The underground scene when Superman goes to Lex's underground lair, there is an extended scene where he faces machine guns, fire and ice before finally breaking into Lex's lair. 4. When Superman knocks that big rock into ravine to protect the water from flooding the village in the mountains, the extended scene shows the poor people so happy to get a little water that seeped in to the rocks and they were swimming and drinking the water. 5. Not to mention all those extended scenes where Lex, Otis and Teschmacher are trying to infiltrate the missile as you mentioned. I haven't seen any of these scenes in years. Are these only on the TV versions? Any info appreciated. Show less

I remember the native american kids splashing and playing in the diverted flood waters. It was only shown in the ABC broadcast (from the early 80s?). I've seen countless cuts of this movie, and that's the only one that had it.

For a planet that was thousands of years ahead of us technologically, the one thing that remained the same was arrogance, bullheadedness and stupidity. Jor-el and his wife should have left with Kal and left the rest to their own devices.

Not really the same thing. It is not like Al Gore doesn't have plenty of company in his beliefs. On Krypton everyone else besides Jor-El's wife blew off his warnings.

@@bdjoh011 Science is not a belief system, I'm told. It's a series of procedures or steps to get closer to the facts (or truth or reality) and it's not about certainty, each measurement has its own error bar. So Jor-El is really saying there is a 99% chance Krypton would explode within the month. And she's saying "not a chance."

I know its part of the long held mythos, but why would an advanced race not have spaceships? I remember watching Transformers the movie (the 1986 cartoon) and at the beginning when the planet was being destroyed, they at least TRIED to leave in ships. I remember thinking thats what Krypton should have done!

Given the red sun and the barren ecology of the planet it's likely that this version of Krypton was very old and that their society had abandoned space travel for some reason, despite clearly having the capability and retaining detailed knowledge of the surrounding galaxies. (Zod was described as being in charge of planetary defence, implying the existence of alien threats). In Man of Steel Krypton is described as having suffered population decline as a result of widespread genetic engineering, abandoning their interstellar Empire and retreating back to the Homeworld as their numbers dwindled. In that continuity Zod's attempted military uprising actually distracted the Council from the looming implosion of the planetary core, preventing them from responding to the danger.

@@tompearce5418 I'm not sure how familiar you are with the comic books, but the Man of Steel origin takes a page from the post-Crisis continuity (*You see, in 1985, DC comics did a complete reboot of most of their heroes, and Superman's story is suddenly very different than it was* The origin here is more in keeping with the original 1938 (and beyond as it was expounded upon) origin

the only thing I can think of, is because she's female... Great idea, btw, to make the Superman symbol a family crest. Must be that what later became Superman's cape, was originally a blanket inside the spacecraft, which also had the symbol on it

Kryptonian society was composed of medieval-esqe Houses, an extremely prominent sociological aspect of their civilization from previous historical era/s despite their subsequent extreme advancements in science and technology. The House of El, briefly mentioned, for instance, by the Eradicator during the comics' Four Supermen era, was one such. These Houses were, in turn, patriarchal in structure, with the leading men having final authority over their given Houses decisions ranging from marriages to focuses of industry/science to political alignment. In the eyes of feminists (or, say, Themyscirans), the women might have been called "oppressed" in that they didn't have equality with the men as House leaders ... but they didn't seem particularly inclined to feel/notice such purported oppression, given Krypton's overwhelming technological advances giving them plenty to do besides be mothers. ... Or at least, that has seemed to be the consensus down through the years concerning the "crystalline" version of Krypton seen here.
