Fightcade 2 has a wifi indicator, and speaking as a _Wi-Fighter_ , It helps a lot. Some people refuse to fight me in a heart-beat or just leave mid-match if the connection is trash. My reaction? "Aight, dude, I get it. May you find a better connection." I'd rather get bodied 0-10 in a smooth, 3 bar connection than win while zipping around and flailing my arms like a blind, madman.

The parry window in Smash Ultimate is 5 frames. The delay in a perfect ethernet match is 5 frames. Do the math. Now imagine throwing Wi-fi in the mix.

It's worse than not being able to decline a match. You can, but you'll get a temp ban for evading matches. As much as I like Smash Ultimate, the online is completely inexcusable. It's just another case of Japanese devs being disconnected from their audience. It's so frustrating.

Oh my god, hearing another person just go off on how shitty smash ultimates quality of life features for online play is the most cathartic thing for me. When it comes to rollback, lan adapters, match declining, WiFi indicators, and anything else, dealing with this audience is a nightmare. You try to say, “hey, this stuff is normal and helpful to everyone” and then start having morons come crawling up from the depths of hell to screech “sakurai doesn’t want it to be competitive, rollback/remotely-passable-netcode was too hard and expensive for the best selling fighting game from one of the most known video game companies (lol), my connections feel fine (spoiler alert: they don’t feel fine), you try hard sweatlords ruin it for everyone else, think of the kids, etcetera etcetera et motherfucking cetera.” I legit hate ultimate online not just because of god awful netcode, but because it literally has nothing in terms of quality of life features, and somehow the community thinks it’s ok 🤨 I try so hard to be polite, but it’s so obvious that tons of smash players have never played other fighting games so they don’t know just how SHIT their games online functionality is 😕

I stopped playing Smash online because it really did feel like I was in prison and forced to play 4v4s when i didn't want to. I queued up for 1v1 and the game would FORCE me to play 4v4s with laggy wifi warriors. I felt like I was being held hostage and it made me so bitter and angry I just dropped the game. Smash Ultimate has the worst online experience of any game I've ever played and its not even close.

I really feel like Sakurai hasn't played other fighting games in 20 years so he has no idea of all the QoL improvements made over the years the in genre nor how a game's online infrastructure should be, I don't think Sakurai has time to play any game online let alone fighting games. It's crazy to me that Ultimate not only doesn't have a rematch option but it also DESELECTS your characters when you go back to the character select screen, it's absurd. Meanwhile other fighting game devs don't play smash so they don't know of the few things Smash has done to quality of life that should be in every fighting game ever, like storing control schemes in name tags, let players back out and enter a match in the character selection screen so you don't have to go the main menu to get someone else's controller working, loading the goddamn stage while people are choosing characters and start loading characters as soon as they're picked to make loading faster and an option to frame advance in training mode. There are probably some more I'm forgetting about but these are the ones that first came to my mind.

I stopped playing SFV after they patched the fan patch because my wifi only laptop was nothing but trash connections. Set up my desktop with wired and now I can play again. Get those tables caped up people.

I remember when Sakurai said "we looked into rollback but it had significant side-effects", there we people replying saying "oh wow, how nice and amazing of Sakurai to try and add Rollback into Smash Bros." Like he's the greatest person alive because someone else that worked on the game that might not have even talked with Sakurai tried to add rollback and gave up at the first hurdle.

What you really need to advocate for is a jitter indicator. WiFi isn't inherently the problem, but more often than not high jitter is associated with WiFi. I can play with 6ms of jitter on WiFi with my setup (tested over 10+ minutes of actively playing a game), or I could tether my cell phone to get a "wired" connection and subject people to >500ms of jitter.

Yeah Sajam! You're what's wrong with the SMASH community! Not the multiple sexual misconduct allegations or the fact that a global pandemic keeps this non-online focused game from being played at large events. I am a Wi fi warrior, my connection is trash and people should be able to have the option to refuse matches against me. I know my connection is unstable but I'm not trying to go pro.

Since Strive came out on PC I've been fiending to play. Unfortunately I can only play on WiFi and I feel so bad when playing online whilst on WiFi. Rollback is good but it's not good enough to fix WiFi.

Ultimate's Quickplay/Elite Smash forces you to pick a character before you start finding a match. So there is no way to see someone's connection before the match starts. HOWEVER, in Smash4's For Glory mode, you went back to the character select after each match, allowing you to see who you're going to face and allowing you to change character.

I love this back and forth you have with them. It's gold.

The inability to refuse matches is especially annoying when you get put in a free for all and you see that a third person has entered but you can't quit (you can disconnect but that makes you get timed out for ten minutes) so you have to sit through playing a free for all.

I am sadly a wifi warrior. Had to stop playing project m because I could no longer have a stable connection. My wifi isn't bad but the jitters just ruin everything and it made the game unplayable for all involved. Slippi seems to be the savior it feels perfect to me and most of the time I get 1 & done it's because I am getting bodied to hard. Hopefully I can back on ethernet soon

The ONLY issue I have with players who dislike WiFi, is the condescending comments that only serve to further their purpose from a solution. “Just get an Ethernet cable, it’s not hard”. As Sajam mentions, sometimes in life you have to deal with it(landlord for me), and if you don’t want to play with WiFi players that’s your right and I don’t have an issue with that. But I hear so much shit on R/Fighters or really any fighting game forum that just tell WiFi players to either get a wired connection or just not play online fighting games whenever the topic comes up. Don’t be mad at the player base for reasonable life restrictions, be angry at the developers of your favorite game for not having Rollback.

Fucker knew my connection was better than his and fucking thanked me like I wanted to play against his trash connection.

I used to believe that my wifi was serviceable given that I lived alone with my pc, phone, and switch. Eventually my friend talked me into ordering a lan cable and it changed my life.

As someone who plays smash I can assure that most smash players do not realise other fighting games exist

I think the reason Smash Ultimate people are the worst about it is because you have to buy a $30 LAN adapter just to be able to plug an ethernet cord into the Switch. I stopped playing Ultimate months ago solely because playing Fox and Marth in a world where I'm the only person who has a wired connection just isn't worth it.
