We see so many people trying to decide where to buy their Italian property and settle in. It is a very tough decision and so much just depends on how you see your ideal life. Here are some differences between Puglia and Calabria. Honestly you cannot go wrong either way!

Hi Maria! Most of the towns along the sea in Puglia are pretty flat and very pretty.

My Aunt's husband was Calabrese. His family pronounced Calabria as "Ca-law-bree-ah". We look forward to visiting both Calabria (and hopefully seeing you!) and Puglia in the near future. 🙂

Hi Alena, I have found more mosquitoes in Calabria but to be fair, in Puglia we tend to stay in the towns and not around heavily planted areas. It is really where there are a lot of plants and trees that they hang out. In Calabria we have screens on our windows and doors and if we dine out we have to use bug spray at times. Hope this helps!

As someone who just purchased a home in Calabria, we watch the sunset every night sink into the Tyrrhenian Sea which is very beautiful . Where as, in Puglia you watch the sun rise in the East. Something to consider . . . . .

This is so true and since we go back and forth it can feel a little strange at times. Still, there are lots of beautiful views in Puglia too.

@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC It is true that you can be the first person in Italy to watch the sun rise from its eastern most point in Otranto. However, there are almost 100 miles of west facing coastline in Puglia dotted with characteristic towns and stunning beaches to watch the sun sink into the sea. So it's very easy to do both within the same day in Puglia.

Chris - as a divorced woman (56) I’m starting my research re holiday apt. My main Q is it easy to meet other people (friends) if I move over? Initially I would be over for summer (and school holidays - I’m a teacher).

Hi Joannie, We have found it very easy to meet people. For the Italians they are always willing to make friends and visit. And many places have a lot of expats. While I like to encourage people coming over to mix with the local there are some times you just need to hear you own language and take a break from struggling with Italian. I find I am never lonely here. If Pete is traveling and I get lonely I just go to the piazza and all my friends are there.

We're in AZ which is dry and hot. The summer temps have risen the last 5-6 years with sustained temps above 110. I've been trying to find somewhere dry and warm so I hit the mother load with Puglia. Your video just confirmed my research. We can travel around Italy but living by the sea with dry air is my nirvana.

Hi Sandy. Before you purchase please spend a Summer in Puglia and see what you think. Italy tends of be humid. Make sure you are happy with the temperatures before you purchase.

You "read my mind". They do all seem to have unique Characteristics . Abruzzo also has so much to offer . One can always take little side trips at leisure .

I love the land and food in Calabria. Prices are much better than Puglia. Healthcare is different Bari having medical schools and great hospitals pushed me to Puglia. All depends on individual preferences.

One thing to keep in mind is that Calabria is earthquake-prone, unlike Puglia.

Yes there are definitely areas where earthquakes happen, In Puglia the earthquake danger is classified as medium so they occur there as well. It really depends on where you are in Calabria. When we purchased in Calabria we looked at fault maps and the Riviera dei Cedri is farther from any major faults. I personally would to live in the mountains along the fault lines anywhere in Italy. Nothing is ever 100%.

Puglia has a better variety of foods plus more to do. In our opinion

Hi Doug, The foods are very different in each region. Being close to Bari there is a huge variety of ethnic foods that we don't generally see in Calabria. That said there is always something going on in both places. They are magic in their own ways.

Hands down Calabria wins for me. The coastline of Pizzo, Tropea and Capo Vaticano are spectacular as compared to Puglia.

The landscape is totally different. Puglia is flatter and more arid whereas Calabria is much and green, almost tropical. It depends on what you love. Both are amazing!

I travelled to Calabria and Puglia last spring. My impression Calabria is perfect for those who love the nature, hiking, loneliness. Compared to Calabria Puglia is more densly populated, my first reaction was: "oh, too many people".

Yes Calabria has a stunning variety of landscape and natural wonders. Any outdoorsy type will love it there. Puglia is very different as you found. The bigger cities are quite crowded.

Which area has the best beaches for swimming? Do you & Pete prefer Calabria or Puglia for sitting on the beach and swimming in the sea?

Hi Deb, There are beautiful beaches everywhere, Diamante and Belvedere Marittimo have gorgeous white sand beaches in Calabria and Scalea has lovely beaches that are more pebbly. We love them all. We have not been to the beaches yet in Puglia to swim. We have just been too busy to get to the beaches at all for the last couple years however we have seen some amazing swimming places in Puglia as well.

Which sea is warmer? I have vidited Calabria in end of June last year and sea was super warm. And visited many times Croatia where sea was not so warm even in July.

Hi Adrian, I am not sure as I have never swum in the Adriatic although I have to agree. The one time I dipped my feet in it did seem cooler thank the Tyrrhenian.

HI Joyce Calabria's earthquake susceptibility is listed as medium and so is Puglia. This is very general. To be more specific, you can look at fault maps. As far as floods are concerned, the towns and cities we have been all seem to have really good drainage. The rain comes down hard here and the drains turn into rivers. So far we have been very impressed with drainage.

Puglia is slightly higher than Calabria in some areas but not by much.

Casa Di Pietro is a house in the historic center. You can find it here: www.booking.com/hotel/it/entire-townhouse-in-scaleas-historical-center.it.html. Also there is one down on Via Fiume Lao which is a nice mansion with a beautiful garden We had clients staying there and they loved it. It is very centrally located as well. I can't recall the name. We have also had people say they liked the Lemon Tree House.
