More tips:1) when my Ozzy was a puppy my late husband Dennis took his old socks with holes in them...balled them up...tied the knot and Ozzy LOVED to play with them! Ozzy never chewed on our shoes! 2) instead of rawhide Ozzy LOVED baby carrots! 3) females fur is more coarse than the males! BEST DOG EVER!

I live in an area where 2 of neighbours are very old persons (94 years old) and sometimes they fall in their garden. Every times, my 3 years old shiba alerted us and all the neighbourhood that they were in troubles because it's not usual for him to bark. And my very old neighbours know they can count on him and they called him for his help. He never failed them.

In the case of my dog, he knows all my neighbours, they always been nice with him, so he likes them. He sees them at least once a week. Honestly think this is the PERFECT breed for an individual or family who are independent in nature. My little Shiba plays right into my lifestyle since he naturally will mind his own business. When he wants attention he'll nudge me with his nose. Other than that he may just sit next to a window or lay down next to my office chair.

Some things i learned with my shiba... Intensive play first or second walk of the day helps mitigate his wildness. Make sure to do your training research. Hes incredibly food motivated and has screamed at me if i eat in front of him. Hes an older boy now and basically wants to play hard once a week, wants to sleep around on the pillows, wants to give side eye and attack the mirror.

I miss my boy. He passed a few months ago at only 6 years old. I miss him so so much. He was stubborn as hell and so mischievous. He was sick all the time so he was really bonded to me. He would always lay with me and sometimes he would come over to me while I was laying down and want me to pet him, his eyes would get big and dilate-he would look at me with indescribable love. When the toxins from his liver went to his brain he lost control of his legs and couldn’t get up and wouldn’t even attempt to move for anyone. I rushed home from work and when he heard and saw me he tried to get up but fell over. It was so sad. Putting him down was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Everyday my heart of broken.

@@adidas4785 Terrible. No one warned me enough about their stubborness. When our puppy is chewing something that he's not supposed to (that can even be dangerous to him; ex: almost swallowing a small piece of wood) it becomes literally impossible to stop him from doing so. If you scold him, he'll get REALLY mad at you and is going to start running and/or chewing faster and harder. If you try to distract him, he won't let go and will ignore your attempt to redirect his attention. If you try to take it away, he'll bite you and start chasing tirelessly whatever you took away from him. And he won't forget it, even if you place him far away, he'll eventually come back to that same spot to try and continue doing what was irritating you. They do have a strong personality, that thus far seems almost impossible to tame, especially in our case (our puppy is hyperactive).

I am a stay at home mom and can watch him most the time, which I have non stop almost and always intervened immediately whenever he has shown behavior that I do not want him repeating by yelling out no, and having him do something else, like command him to sit, so I can tell him he's a good boy for listening to that command instead, for example. But still, to this day, he does go for a bite, he has to always stay on a leash outside, or he will run off and you will find him only if he's microchipped and you have to pray he didn't get hit by a car, but it does get waaaay better in time xD

We have a shiba, he's now almost 2 years old, and only recently have we started to see him basically fully accepting my husband and me and accepting the fact that he has to listen to us. He still does sometimes what he wants, or acts like he suddenly just went deaf and can't hear you xD he's a joker for sure, but I could not imagine having any other dog, then again we have no children as of yet and I have not been working since Covid started, which convinces me that there is no possible way for people to have any dog and work, especially when they are puppies and need to go out every three hours. Great video! Shibas are the greatest!! The barking part is so true, if your shiba is barking there is a problem, threat, or something that they don't think is normal.
@AvindDeMaros
@AvindDeMaros 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with this with one exception. Our male Shiba started barking about the same time every night, around 7pm. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on as each time I tried to sneak out he would hear me and come check to see what I was doing. Eventually, I finally was out front when he started barking out back in the fenced yard. I was able to sneak around to see what was going on. At first I was confused as I could see nothing that might be triggering him to bark. Then I noticed he would bark, then pause and listen and then bark again. That's when it hit me. There were four other dogs in the neighborhood. One would bark and then another would answer! It looked just like a group of people having a conversation, only it was at a distance! The properties where we live are all around 1-2 acres so there is some space between the houses. Since that time, we have learned to expect the "evening social hour". It doesn't bother any of the neighbors as most of them just laugh at it when they stop and listen. If it isn't the social hour, then we do pay very strict attention when he starts barking because, as it has been said, there is always a reason!

They're easy to train if they can be shown why it's a good idea for them. Or, make them think what you want them to do is the best idea they ever had. Training is very necessary. Unfortunately, they can't be left off leash. One rabbit, deer or squirrel and off they go. They love to run and run faster than they can learn the way they went. Making it easy for them to get lost. They're excellent watch dogs, noticing anything or anyone out of place. They scream and that sets off the Big Dogs. Best home alarm system ever. We

I can call him back into the house but when he outright ignores me, for him, usually means he has to do a couple more things outside. He enjoys going after that squiggle ball too. I like when he does his howl after waking me up. He’ll pick up the bone and sometimes howl with it in his mouth. Funny. Sometimes sounds like a (muffled?) tuba sound.

Best dogs EVER. Anyone who doesn't like them or can't handle them is lame. They are willful and lazy, but you can work around that if you are clever. I call them "cat-dogs" and often talk about their "cat-like" behavior. Work around his habits and allow him to have certain quirks - like nap times, etc. The drawbacks are tiny compared to how fun and loving they are.

It's not an easy dog breed but I think I'm ok at being a shiba parent. She is my first dog, but 5th pet after having 4 cats during my lifetime. She isn't very obedient, but she is doing pretty well for an almost 4 months old puppy. When outside, Ruby is very distracted by everything. There's good days and bad ones but I stay consistent. She likes chicken a lot so I take that when on walks and it often (but not always) motivates her. On bad days nothing makes her listen but I need to keep doing what I've been doing. Sometimes she can be frustrating but it's important to keep calm. On normal and good days, she is a pleasure to have. I'm used to cats so having a mind of her own and not being a people pleaser is familiar. She is loving and cuddly though. She definitely is quirky and makes me laugh. She learns quickly but might not listen. ;) I'm not the most patient person but she's teaching me to keep going and to be calm even in frustrating situations. I wouldn't recommend this breed to everyone, you need to research them. It doesn't matter if someone is a first time or experienced dog owner, they have specific traits that need to be researched.

We're dealing with the start of teething so it's sometimes a pain (literally) to deal with her. She does understand no, ignoring her and timeout though. The strategies work. Also if the puppy is too excited and nippy, it may be they are tired and don't know it. Like a small child, you need to put them to bed so they sleep. They stop being grumpy afterwards. 😸

Shiba inu are my favorite creature. All of them are different and that is what make this breed unique. 😁😁😁 If you Shiba is stubborn, be patient. Because hard work pays off. Shiba inu is very loyal, that is once it accepts you as its pack leader. Make sure to build a bond with your dog, and give attention and love to your dog this is the most important thing. Sidenote: This video is very very wholesome, it has probably become my favorite.😃 Love Your Channel. Dan

Agree Dan, this channel focuses on useful and practical Shiba info instead of using Shiba for entertainment and gain only. It is helping people understand this dog. It's important because they are a "primitive breed" so need special care in providing for their REAL NEEDS - not just a cute looking meme machine which is often imo NEGLECTFUL of the dog and it's good life. Personally if I had a Shiba I'd work with them on their hunting skills. It does make the dog much harder to control once they are on "hunt" but the quality of life is worth it imho if you live in an area with enough wildness. For Shibas they'd need GPS so you can recollect them and locate them, though. I leave my sock around my dog at night time, she likes to hoard toys and valuable items! But the sock has the scent and the "decay of scent over time" tells the dog the right time (as well as routine) when they next see you in the morning!

What you say is fundamentally correct, but atst I would add that Shiba Inus are much more of a "niche" dog breed than is probably appreciated: They are domesticated but equally they retain more wild instincts intact... thus are less suitable to more people according to what more people seem to want from a dog eg "a fluffy portable teddy that seeks to please it's owners". Shibas are more like pack-mates on an more individual footing/role with their owners as part of a pack relationship. And they are a breed that probably should be encouraged to go "hunting" with their humans too (imho). Though that would be a significant investment of the human to do that activity regularly with their dog or else a person with the right context who lives in the wilds more where it would be a daily simple trek.

They really arent good for first time owners. If your not knowledgable about dog training it will be hell. But of course u can always take the time to learn! Definitely before getting one though. Also, stereotypically they arent cuddly and will typically sleep away from you. So a lot of “dog people” tend to not like that. They are like more energetic cats lol

@@XxEmmJayxX Agree, this is important advice: Too many people judge on cutey-looks (skin deep) instead of the actual behaviour/physiology and even psychology of the dog breed. I'd also add "Right Context": Shibas are hunting dogs and their instinct should be activated with the human in the 100% optimal context. Small Game Hunters.

#9, Shiba’s will fight when they are afraid. I can’t say this enough, but even if there is no reason for resource guarding, it is still possible. It falls into the stubborn and protective trait as well. You may not know why they are doing it, but please get a trainer involved before it gets bad. My little girl decided to resource guard high reward things because the cats kind of taught her that with their food. In one month with the advice from the trainer, it’s almost nonexistent. No more nipping, she just uses body language to let us know. They are so so so smart.

do you find Shiba's intelligence challenging to train?
@Nomarcaper
@Nomarcaper 3 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferking2243 Yes! But it's not impossible. I got a Shiba because I wanted a dog with a personality and a spirit. Not saying other dogs don't though! My family has always had herding or hunting breeds, and they almost always listen regardless, because they just want to please their owners. Shibas can be like that but in their own way. The training is challenging, but it is so rewarding. She was my first dog personally, so I don't suggest it to first-time dog owners.

Someone help us please. We got a shiba puppy 2 weeks ago and our life became a living endless nightmare since then.He chews and eats things that he is not supposed to (And it's literally impossible to redirect his attention, scold him or take whatever he's chewing away from him - he'll run away, bite you, destroy things faster just to irritate you and hunt down what you took away). He barks and screams REALLY loud and tirelessly whenever he is not alowed to do something that he wants, and sometimes we're just trying to protect him from himself (ex: swallowing pieces of his bed / trying to throw himself from our balcony). He gets really aggitated and starts running in circles like crazy for hours, bumping on everything and destroying everthing that's within his reach. We're almost being kicked out of our apartment, we're receiving several notifications from our neighboors because of his bad and uncontrollable behaviour. I was aware of their unique traits and this is not my first dog either. I just thought that it was manageable! This is my first time dealing with an almost 100% wild creature that doesn't want to be a pet. I would be really grateful if someone could shed a light on what to do, we just want him to be happy but he is too wild and aggressive.

Hi Jane, Jimmy used to LOVE digging carpet but not anymore(he is almost 3 now). In our old apartment our carpet had some bald spots that was destroyed by him … We used to need to monitor him almost all the time. You need to immediately stop him if he bites carpet. Use the discipline technique by verbally tell him no or if he is really bad give him timeout whenever he bites carpet. Good luck!

For what it's worth, my 2 year old digs much less often now than a year ago. He would dig at the carpet, the couch or his crate pad. It seems that he would do this mostly in the evenings, before bedtime. We thought he might be expending excess energy, tiring himself out to sleep fitfully.

I crated my Shiba at first but then was able to transition to leaving him out in the house while I was gone. When I first started I would make sure to have everything he could chew up and out of his reach, and I definitely came home to a few messes over the years, but he is 4 now and I can totally trust him alone at home during the day…it’s the middle of the night while I’m trying to sleep I have to worry about…he has an affinity for dirty laundry.

They are quite mouthy and will chew many things, especially shoes, wallets, and woodedges of low tables. They have a large set of teeth and love to chew on things, at least my shiba does. Also, he loves to steal thing and play a chasing game. I can see the wheels turning in his mind at night, looking for things to pull off of counter just to getme to chase him. Nothing is off limits. If you have very nice wooden furniture, shiba might be a problem. I cannot say all shiba do this, but my hunch is many do.

Hi if you take your new puppy to the classroom with you starting at young age he will learn how to interact with kids. However, I 'd caution you should always place him in a confined area if you are not with him. Sometimes kid don't know how to interact with dogs so you should always keep an eye on him when your dog interact with kids. This is the same concept that you should never leave your infant and the dog in the same place without supervision. Good luck!

If his eyes are running everyday it could be environmental allergy. Sometimes it also accompanied with ear infection or ichy skin. If it is consistent or become worse you should check with your vet for correct diagnose.

We have two puppies at home and my partner really loves the other one. It is too hard for us to raise two puppies together. Our Shiba came to us when he was 7 weeks old and now he's 5-month old. He used to bite things and humans but now he no longer bites. We do not know how to stop him from whining for no reason during the mid of the night. Now we had to send him away. I really love this puppy but I am not a good parent. So sorry and so sad.
