I'm not gonna say rituals work, but, considering she literally experienced broken heart syndrome it is clear her mind can have a huge toll on her body. Her believing she is under protection will cause her to remain calm, whereas believing she doesn't have the protection would cause anxiety/heart strain. Exactly what you don't want during heart surgery. And hey, if it fails, they shouldn't sue because their god was supposed to be protecting her.

@@samg873 basically it throws the heart out of wack. I mean you can literally feel it. The term heartbreaking exists for a reason. If you've ever had a loved one die, or even a really bad break up and you have that pain in your chest. Broken heart syndrome is that on steroids. Imagine that for a prolonged period of time and you can imagine how the heart eventually gives out.

As a chronic patient I 100000% believe and KNOW that the bodies physical health is dependent on BOTH the western and eastern "medicines". I think the word 'ritual' is scary to those who do not understand what it really is. Why should this type of prayer be any different then a catholic priest coming in? It's not wrong. It's not weird. It's just different. THAT SAID *I DO understand not wanting any type of cutting of the skin*. I am immunocompromised so alot of hospital life revolves around not getting any infection so I do have a bias on that lol. But also. The doctor is literally looking a patient who has a BROKEN HEART because of the grief she FELT about a tragedy in her hometown and still doesn't think that this traditional ritual would have an impact on her physical health? Make it make sense doc. 😙😆

THANK YOU! Her heart was literally damaged by her mindset and emotional pain, so it would make complete sense that it could be healing to heal her spirit. Mind body connection is very, very real. I’m also immunocompromised (I have lupus and multiple other autoimmune diseases) so I do get the risk of infection but in a sterile environment with hospital staff right there, it’s probably the safest way that ritual has ever been performed.

Still a large difference between broken heart syndrome and the body going into multi organ distress. Plus the ritual itself is legitimately dangerous to do. Exactly. I'm not religious at all, but if you think praying or something will help. By all means. Go for it. The doctor didn't seem to mind listening to what the ritual was until they mentioned cutting her. That's when he disagreed. I don't blame him. Even if the scalpel was sterilized, what if they cut too deep by accident? Or the powder stuff they put ON the cut. Just seems dangerous for someone who needs to go into surgery.

The shots of the wheel on the gurney were a nice touch. I'm not sure if it symbolized the patient's beliefs-that she wouldn't go forth without the ritual-or the doctor's mind turning around, changing direction, about the validity of the ritual. Maybe both.

Superstition or culture and religious purposes? It's problematic and ignorant to assume indigenous practices fall in the lines of superstition. People believe what they believe and have rights to choose religion and cultures they want to follow, how arrogant to label an entire belief system and spiritual ritual as a mere superstition just because they believe differently.
@avaobrien5212
@avaobrien5212 Жыл бұрын
Well this ritual was not based on science or reason, but rather the belief that protection can be bestowed upon an individual through supernatural power. That's literally the definition of superstition. Cultural and religious rituals often are superstitious because they are based on a belief of supernatural influence, that which cannot be explained or understood by science or natural law. I don't think they were labelling the entire belief system as superstitious, but rather the ritual itself.

I dislike the idea that a patient needs to have absolute trust in some person doing surgery. Too much ego kills people. If it were something not involving cutting and rubbing things into a wound I would be horrified at how far hes willing to go to not allow it. Like a prayer or anointing or whatever...all that is harmless at worst. Because they do want to introduce potential pathogens into a wound in a hospital where nosocomial infections are always present I wouldnt want it happening either but medicine is one of the biggest believers in the power of the mind to cause physical issues. Just look at nearly every single medication we have..they use a placebo to ensure that the study has accounted for the minds power

This is a 'yikes' clip to put out there, and a fail on trying to make people more medically informed. Its one thing to respect traditions and beliefs, but some such rituals are inherently dangerous in a medical setting. To go even further and portray that it actually works... yeah no, thats NOT ok. And I've been seeing people's "mind over body" argument, and I'll put it shortly; The mind can only do so much in that regard. Your mind cannot do things like put your heart into V-fib, or cause your lungs to shut down. This is 1000% dramatization from the show, and does not actually happen this way IRL. Most hospitals don't allow most rituals and such due to risks and dangers to patients. And there's no chance AT ALL of a hospital allowing this sort of ritual, because then the patient isn't safe to operate on afterwords due to it being so unsterile (The water spitting especially. Human mouths are dirty as fuck).

This is necromantic manipulation of energies of life, death and unlife in some form. Several practices exist in African and Caribbean cultures. Several other uses are in Pagan European practices. They are not showing all that much, so I cannot identify the exact source of the entirety of it. But some rituals do involve assistants, and the ritualist may draw blood or even make incision(s) with a blade for a therapeutic purpose ( and much, much more than what is shown here).

Yes, this is based on Haitian Vodou. The cutting of the skin, into which herbs are rubbed, is called a gad, meaning "guard". It is one of many ways of adding protection to someone in a ritual fashion. During the ceremony you see long, crossed necklaces on the celebrants. These are called kolye, and are an item possessed by initiates. The fact that they're wearing white indicates they're serving Rada spirits (cooler, more relaxed, older ones) or Nago spirits (warriors). The red satin accenting their outfits helps narrow down which spirit they're invoking. The blowing of liquid (likely rum) into the air is called fè foula, and is a spiritual salute and purification. The beaded calabash gourds some are shaking are called asson, and are tools of the priesthood. They also indicate which variety of Haitian Vodou is being referenced here. Not everything is accurate but enough is that we can tell some care was taken.
