Supertramp's "Breakfast In America" was the biggest selling album in the world in 1979.
It spawned several hit singles and went on to win two Grammy Awards and sell in excess of 20 million copies. On the album's release Supertramp embarked on a 10 month world tour which arrived in Paris at the end of November.
These 4 shows from the Pavillon de Paris were all recorded and the last two were filmed. The audio went on to form the basis of the 1980 live album "Paris" but the film was never released. As bonus features, we include five tracks recorded on the night (but for which there is no film) using montage visuals: "Ain't Nobody But Me", "You Started Laughing (When I Held You In My Arms)", "A Soapbox Opera", "From Now On" and "Downstream".

Especially since the saxophone player was not only the only one to show up for an audition, they ( Roger and Rick) were too hung over to listen and they hired him and went back to sleep.

Yes truly outstanding caliber of artistry and prodigy, another level of accomplishment and brilliance with skillfulness and grace!!!!! Their music has been part of our lives (for those lucky of us who were young teens in the 70s) through joy, fear, sadness, first kiss, first time in love, gave us hope, inspiration, creativity, were our faithful best friend and comforter at all time....As a band, Supertramp is invincible, as solo goes, no comments or no comparison!!! Thank you beautiful bunch !

Forgotten just how utterly amazing Supertramp were. Outstanding musicianship. Remember being stuck for hours on Daisy Island, North Berwick after being caught out by tides. Me and my mate Martin Hughes sang every line for Crime Of The Century to pass the time! Those lyrics are still in my head 40+ years later. So much meaning behind every song on that album. A true classic. Thanks for the music. Supertramp were unique and underrated by some - that's the true Crime Of The 20th Century!!

I tried to remind people in 2011 but EverGreen music [sic] and collaboraters youtube gave me multiple supertramp strikes and nuked my account. To this day the account is 'unfindable', even though I had 200 great videos uploaded. So yeah.

@ShariSez1 Hodgson would be the one who'd refuse to show. The rest all hung in as Supertramp and would. Hodgson has been invited to reunite, but refuses. Love everything he does, but he's disowned Supertramp altogether. So much for the fans. Money and pride come first.

I remember a McCartney interview sometime in the 70's. Asked what music he listened to, he replied, "Supertramp". He knew good music.

Yep...ain't a whole lot...Eagles, AC/DC/Blue Oyster Cult, Metallica, BTO, Triumph, George Thorogood and Nazareth are some that pull it of that I have witnessed. The Stones, Aerosmith, The Nuge and my heroes The Who were shitty when I saw them - although The Who can do it I'm sure. Aerosmith was too strung out on smack, don't know what da fuk Ted's reason was...

@@fredknittney3273 In the case of the Who, I believe that's deliberate, at least through the 60s and 70s. They sounded almost like two different bands in that era, depending on whether they were in the studio or on the stage, one, slick and produced, the other, just raw protopunk. by the 90s they showed that they could do their stuff live more like they did it on the studio recordings.

Just an observation. But this is the first time watching the live video of the album which I fell in love with years ago. I must say both Rick's and Roger's voices definitely needed to be re-recorded in the studio before the release. Great musicians yes, but great singers they aren't. - Still love their songwriting and craftsmanship. Just too bad about them still fighting over the release rights to this day BTW it's 2022 guys! Let it go

My dad played this album once when I was 4 years old in 1979. The album started as I was drifting off to sleep. I stayed awake for the whole album, it has been on high rotation ever since. Now I can see what these cats looked like

When this album was out we didn’t have much video available. Watching this today I see it was Roger playing guitar. I thought he only played keyboards. What a musician!

Listen to his wah pedal guitar on Paris 79 another mans woman ( imo the best ever live version of that tune) and Rudy also from the same gig, that should tell you how good a guitarist he is, he’s a multi instrumentalist who actually played bass in the early supertramp days as well, if you like their first two albums you’ll hear quite a bit of Roger playing bass on those.

Let's talk about how great a funky rhythm guitar player Roger Hodgson is. And about the absolutely great, juicy tone from his Strat. He is a frequently underrated guitar player, but not only he is a wonderful acoustic player, but a great electric guitarist. Good fills, great riffs, excelent soloing when required (Goodbye Stranger comes to mind, and the extraordinary ending of Don't leave me now...) All of them wonderful musicians. Rick Davies is killing it in the intro. And the whole band is tight as can be. Paris was definitely a highlight in their careers.

These guys are so damn good. I am not going to say that I burn a candle for them - freely admit that I spend too much time being a Prog Snob with Yes and Genesis - but for one thing Supertramp pretty much never set a foot wrong. For another, when they are in the pocket they are an immensely powerful unit. And yeah, the music is catchy and attractive to a lot of people. To echo the comments of some other folks who have posted on this video: I hope that they realize how special it is to have a whole band and to get past the personal stuff and simply give the fans what they want “Supertramp”.

@@caryheuchert Hodgson's solo on "Waiting So Long" is straight-up Gilmour. Of course, after he left the band, the band actually got Gilmour in to play on "Brother Where You Bound" - and then had to hire somebody to do that live. They found a genius in Carl Verheyen...

During this time, John Holliwell didn't know how to play the Saxophone. He would go back to university to learn properly how to in 1987.

@@WilliamJones-sf5pt Nah, he was already one of the best woodwind players in pop and rock. The solo on the studio version is a masterpiece of tone and phrasing. Studying classical saxophone (in the 90s, not 87) was an addition on top of that.

@@progmeup Roger Hodgson liked to point out that he was the only one to receive a formal advanced education in sound. John Helliwell could also play the keyboards. He played might near everything. I think his mentioning to go back to learn how to truly play the sax was a jab at Roger. I see John Helliwell as the equal to Roger. Rick is the one that stood out. People don't realize how great he was playing the drums. He just slid over to play percussion on the piano. His organ playing is also underrated. Rick let it slip out that he was once offered the opportunity to play organ in a band which he never played. So, he faked it.

I bought the Paris double album when I was 14 years old and paid about $13 for it. My parents just shook their heads that someone would spend a small fortune for a record. I wore that thing out though. Hearing this exact version really takes me back.

Mister Douglas 'Dougie' Campbell Thomson is one of my favorite bass players of all time. I'm a guitarist by trade but it was his playing that inspired me to learn the nuances of bass lines - truly a creative master Never overplayed, always left space for the other instruments, creatively worked the grove and syncopated the pocket

Carlos yo creo que si tuvo el reconocimiento y tuvieron muchísimo éxito en todo el mundo, lo que pasa también que en esa época la competencia estaba muy dura con grandes bandas y artistas pero ellos tienen su lugar y muy importante, Saludos.

Got the DVD of this concert for my birthday two years back. Goddamn, that was a great time in my life. Supertramp, specifically crime of the century, always brings back great memories of that time

I was able to purchase COTC as an LP in the late 70s - song after song, a total masterpiece and I built my own concept album interpretation, regardless of whether that was the intention of the band itself. Starting with School, then Hyde in your shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy, a deep dive in all the social psychoses and stress inflicted by our society - and then the irony of the finale, Crime of the Century...wow, the perfect Album! I don't think it's an exaggeration to say it's at the level of Dark Side of the Moon. Crisis?What Crisis and BIA where excellent encores (and don't forget Even in the Quietest Moments) - what a band, WHAT A BAND!!!

Growing up with a jazz musician father I can tell you that when I first heard this I thought them dudes got some serious chops. Saw them on their first U.S. tour awesome show. Almost 50 years later and their music still stands up against the best of them.

Rick says this: "The band was winding down a bit, in a way, and Roger felt we'd peaked. But I didn't look at it that way, I think that bands have peaks and valleys. We'd worked so hard to get ourselves to that point, and it just seemed nuts to me to want to walk away from it. Maybe I'm more of a realist than Roger, but I thought we still had a lot of good music in us if we'd wanted to. So we continued on."

50 years ago or today: Just very well done and played songs. They sound great from the first to the last tone and are fun to sing along. Bloody well right! Supertramp one of the best bands ever.

I was 9, my brother played Crises what crises non stop. What the hell did I know about crisis!? Now 58 yrs old and I get it...life proved it. Love this band.

As a lifelong musician I can only imagine the personal and collective space these guys were in to achieve this level of songwriting and musicality. Respect to Supertramp, I still listen to their albums almost daily.

One of my 3 favorite bands growing up , the other 2 being Genesis and Styx. These bands have such talent from all the musicans, Beautiful harmonies, perfect time and perfect pitch. A very under rated band considering what the alternatives are of today. Right ? Bloody well right!

I saw Styx in concert when they were still hot. I regret that I never got to see Supertramp. In 1977 they were on top of the radio.

These guys would not only put all their money back into buying tickets for fans to get in free, but they could actually play their instruments as well. I always thought they achieved a profound sound. Turning the square into an interesting circle is what most successful groups accomplished. Supertramp seemed to take that added effort to prove, along a straight line, that one good note necessarily led to the next profoundly so!

@@lema7030 You had to listen to them being played on at least a respectable sound system. Yamaha 1000m speakers. McIntosh Amp. This was their black covered album. Engineered supremely. It helped to smoke some respectable grass.

I saw Supertramp at the Brighton Dome in 1976. There were seats empty. They came back two years later ("Crisis" tour) at the Metropole in Brighton. It was sold out in an hour.....so I never saw them live again!

I went to see Medicine Head ( remember them?) in Llandudno some years back. There were maybe twenty of us including the band, so sad. They were brilliant.

Saw them in Houston on Breakfast in America tour, one of my all time favorites!! One of the most tasteful shows ,ever! Can't forget the movies, or the simple, but extremely effective light show ! The crowd gasped! Rudy, a literal trip! Crime of the century... Devastating! Have all their albums!

EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!!! finally TODAY I can SEE the PHENOMENAL and extraordinary Supertramp and his Band... I could only listen to them here in Peru (Cusco) during my youth (university) and, with many limitations of the time and condition of my country, why not there was even this wonder of the INTERNET.... I see and listen to you these days as a wonderful MEMORY of those times. This GREAT musical group and its exceptional vocalist is very special, because it has great RICHNESS and MELODIC variety in all its interpretations !!!! Thanks KZfaq .... and greetings to all.

First concert I ever saw. August of 75, 15 years old. Still listen to them to this day. Went and saw Roger summer before last. Sucks that egos and animosity rob the fans of their music.
