It really shocks me that we have so many differences, i would rank Breakfast higher, crisis lower. And many songs you really dislike, i really like instead. But it's your opinion and your taste. You're not saying "this IS good, this IS bad". And we should all respect everyone's opinions. Good video!

I would label Even in the Quietest Moments more prog than Crisis. Crisis is a collection of ten very melodic songs but isn't nearly as proggy as Crime of the Century and Fool's Overture is, arguably, Supertramp's proggiest song.

There are definitely proggy elements in Asylum, Rudy and Fool's Overtures. The constant throughout all of Supertramp's output is just lush, sublime melodies. Crisis is a very difficult album to classify because it's neither pop nor prog. @@Reel-Justice

Crime Of The Century is indeed a masterpiece. I listened to it again for the first time in about 40 years and was struck by how deft the arrangements are and also the subject matter is a lot more raw and honest than I remembered it. Crisis and Breakfast were the only other two I knew from back then, but I must know Quiet Moments so will have a listen. Great video as always. Thank you!

I'm going to take a stab and pressume that "School" was the first rock song to criticize British education 5 or 6 years before Pink Floyd did. Also, some of the lyrical subjects in Crime Of The Century reflect Dark Side Of The Moon in some ways, and the production reminds me of Moon a little.

Don't know the early albums but top three are spot on for me. I found Breakfast in America a bit weak and 'glitzy' with the exception of Long Way Home which I think is an excellent track and one which I believe Roger penned many years before they recorded it. Crisis is a good all rounder but Crime is a classic. It is every bit as relevant and classy today. Let's not forget the quality of the production long before digital bits turned up. In fact, the more I listen to it, the better it gets. That is the sign of a classic.

Given that Supertramp is one of my favorite groups, I started listening to this video expecting that my well-established opinions would find a lot to argue about with anyone else's list. And then, well, I pretty much agreed with everything you said for the first 12 minutes. I agree with the order and most of the comments for all these albums: 7 - Debut album 8 - Slow Motion 9 - Indelibly Stamped 10 - Free as a Bird 11 - Some Things Never Change I'd say that "Some Things Never Change" is particularly disappointing given that some of these same guys had already worked on multiple albums that were masterpieces. I might be okay with it as a first album, but not coming from experienced song writers and musicians. But then while you were reviewing "...famous last words...", you talked about how much you cringe at "It's Raining Again". Now I'm not going to claim it's a top-tier classic song, but it's a fine song for what it is. Which is just a friendly pop song. And because I find that song more enjoyable than you do, I'd give "...famous last words..." a higher score than you do. But that's a "higher score" in the sense of "on the scale of 1 to 100", and it's not enough higher to change the rank in the list of Supertramp albums. So that album still comes in at #6 on my list. And I'd also agree with "Brother Where You Bound" as #5, although the title bugs my sense of english. It should be "Brother Where ARE You Bound"! So that gives: 5 Brother Where You Bound 6 ...famous last words... And it's at this point our choices are going to diverge. While I like "Crisis? What Crisis?", I don't see that it has any stand-out masterpiece songs on it. And I enjoy the songs on the second side of "Breakfast in America" much more than you do. To pick one example, casual conversations do tend to bore me in real life, so "Casual Conversations" seems like a perfect song to convey that feeling. And I think the mood of the music fits perfectly with the topic. It'd make no sense to have some up-tempo multi-layered instrumentation while the singer talks about something which literally bores them! IMO, the only weak song on the album is "Lord Is It Mine". It isn't a bad song, but I think it's a bit weak when compared to everything else on the album. Also, when "Breakfast in America" was released, I was attending college. A college which focuses very strongly on science and engineering, so "Logical Song" was a huge favorite here. Not only that, but Supertramp included that college as part of its tour to support "Breakfast in America". That concert was just stunningly excellent, including all kinds of extra films added to match the songs. When the concert started out I had a great seat in the middle of the floor, and I thought the band was playing much too loud. By the time of the encore, I couldn't even hear the band because the audience was cheering so loudly. It was a great great concert! And that concert focused mostly on songs from "Breakfast in America" and "Crime of the Century", along with "Give a Little Bit" because it was their most well-known song from their catalog. There were a few more songs from "Even in the Quietest Moments" and "Crisis? What Crisis?", but those didn't stand out compared to the rest of the concert. So I'd have to list my top-four as: 1 Crime of the Century 2 Breakfast in America 3 Even in the Quietest Moments 4 Crisis? What Crisis? IMO each one of these easily beats the one below it on the list, and if you add in "Brother Where (Are) You Bound", you have a group of albums which are head-and-shoulders above the rest of their albums.

Best to Worst 1974 Crime of the Century (Duh....) 1977 Even in the Quietest Moments... (All Time Classic Album, Period.) 1980 Paris (Live) (DVD Version is also Incredible!) 1985 Brother Where You Bound (UNDER-Rated Album!) 2010 70-10 Tour (Live) (A shame its not on DVD or CDs !!!) 1970 Supertramp (Highly UNDER-Rated Album!) 1975 Is Everybody Listening? (Live) (now on Crime 2CD Deluxe) 1975 Crisis? What Crisis? (Great follup to Crime of the Century !!) 1997 Some Things Never Change (Pretty Solid, could be a stronger 42 min CD) 1971 Indelibly Stamped (Country and Blues album, Their Weirdest One) 1982 Famous Last Words (Decent Album) 1979 Breakfast in America (Incredibly Over-rated !) 1973 Land Ho (7") (Obscure single with decent b side) (on Retrospectacle 2CD) 1999 It Was the Best of Times (Decent Live Performances of Oldies) 1988 Live 88 (Dated, not as bad as Free as a Bird. 2020 remixed by Steve Wilson would be sweet) 2002 Slow Motion (Seems very Bland....) 1987 Free as a Bird (Totally AWFUL..but "It's Alright, and I'm Beggin' You" is OK! ) Notes Some things never change, have the perfect opener, it reminds me of Steely Dan... I Need to check out Slow Motion though. Free as a Bird could have been a decent album, live to the live versions they have done of those songs, listenable at-least, they could have done a so much better studio album thinking of their still unrecorded studio version of "you started laughing" which were played live all the time, and probably other oldies (goldrush ect). Regarding Breakfast so low in my list is i dont enjoy the whole of it, probably "Child of Vision" "Just Another Nervous Wreck" and "Take the Long Way Home" are the only GREAT songs, the rest are over-produced and it reminds me of bad disco music, but were the craze in 1979. These three are not disco or dated at all, they could fit nearly any other album they did, so its an important album. and Famous Last Words is an album Roger regret he did with them, there are moments on that too though. Roger`s first solo album is also just as important as Brother were you Bound "Open the Door" is also a strong album, i hope new studio music comes from his, and Supertramp too !!! Indelibly Stamped have some genious "Aries" "Potter" but there are so much filler songs on it. the DEBUT is a masterpiece to me, as Crime,Even,Paris......

I have to agree! I do have very sentimental feelings about Crime Of The Century. When the opening notes to School begin it takes me back to a time when I had just begun to investigate music. There was so much, and when you are on a budget you don't want to blow your album dollar on a stinker. This was a wise investment, and I still love it 40 years later.

I agree, Crime is their best on a song-for-song level. It is perfectly constructed, arranged, and the darkness and alienation of the songs make it compelling and personal. Breakfast's singles are better, but the lows are lower. I disagree with you, I love "Lord is it Mine?"

Yes, Crime of The Century is a masterwork, easily #1. To me, Breakfast In America is #2, and while it's a very cheesy and somewhat dated album production-wise, it's got to be one of the catchiest track-lists in the annuals of Rock, I never grow tired of it.

My favourite ST albums will always be Quitest Moments and Breakfast. No other albums have topped the songs from those 2 for me. Lord Is It Mine, the title tracks, Goodbye Stranger, Logical Song, Babaji, Fool's Overture, Give a Little Bit and especially From Now On. It's one of the few prog bands I don't consider too technical for their own good. Sure it's very poppy at times but I love it and my dad is still a big fan.

I understand you dropping Breakfast in America down a few pegs over side 2 of the album. Side 1 is up there on the all time great album side lists. I'm one of those people that also loved side 2. I didn't need those songs to be as big and bold as side 1. For me the weakest song, and a song I still enjoy, on the album is Just Another Nervous Wreck.

I got to see them live in Ottawa during the COTC tour in Aug. 75. I can still remember wondering what the projector over my left shoulder was for. How they got the whole audience to scream in unison during School still sends chills down my spine. Incredible show. The encore was when I found out what the projector was for. During the long outro, the OCC faded into complete darkness. Then a pinpoint of light came out of one corner over the stage. It slowly grew into the COTC album cover! It just kept coming, even after the song ended, and we were cheering and leaving. AS far as your ranking goes, my only difference would be Crisis? What Crisis? should be lower, while My choice for #2, would be EITQM.

Thanks for putting your opinions out there. Of course I don't agree with some of what you say (we are all different after all with different tastes), the main disagreements being 1The first album is brilliant and criminally overlooked. Words Unspoken and Maybe I'm a beggar are sublime. 2 Indelibly is great too, ok a bit dodgy in parts but plenty of highlights. ...Rosie, Travelled, Forever, Times have changed 3 Downstream is one of the highlights of EITQM. 4 Breakfast is not top heavy, there isn't a weak track on it . I'm an old Supertramp fan. In fact Supertramp was my first band that I every fell in love with. While I agree with your love of Crime of the Century I find your rating of these albums and songs to be appauling. These songs are too vintage and timeless to rate. If you don't like the song it is only because you were not there when these albums came out. I feel you like you just took a shit on my yawn.

This is completely subjective but here’s mine: 1. Quietest Moments 2. Breakfast 3. Crime 4. Crisis 5. Famous Last Words 6. Some things never change 7. Brother 8. Slow Motion 9. Free As a Bird Paris and 70-10 are killer but those are live so I chose not to include them. Also, I’m strongly of the opinion that “Lover Boy” is the best Supertramp song, but to each their own.

I agree with your choices in terms of recognising the worst & the best of Supertramp’s albums. The only difference in order of preference is that I rate Famous Last Words higher than Cannonball. I also recommend as a compilation for anyone wanting to own a good representation of their work, 'Retrospective, The Supertramp Anthology'. The five best albums are well represented but in addition you get the best track from the last five albums.

Ironic that you would chose "Some Things Never Change" as the worst. I recall an interview where Rick Davies talked about long hours crafting this album to sound more like a traditional Supertramp album that the previous two he released without Roger Hodgson. It's not my all time favorite Supertramp album, but it's certainly not the worst. I think it's better than "Free As a Bird," which suffered from forced commercialism over creativity. I'd place the first two albums "Free As a Bird" and "Famous Last Words" at the bottom. And I agree "It's Raining Again" is one of the worst Supertramp songs ever released. "Brother Where You Bound" is in my opinion one of the best produced albums ever. The sound quality alone makes it an epic album. I believe Rick Davies wanted to include the title track on "Famous Last Words," but there wasn't enough room for a 16 minute track. You can almost here Davie's sigh of relief that he finally had an outlet to finally do it the way he wanted. It's a darker, more progress album that blows "Famous Last Words" out of the water.

I'm definitely into the "Crisis" league. By the way, I never felt it like an optimistic or summerish album. I find it a bit dark though. For my part, the second side is where the magic of the album lies, "The meaning" being my favourite.

I understand why it's not on here, but the Paris double live album deserves a mention (if not a placing because it's a live album) Apart from that I'd have placed breakfast in America at 3 and quietest moments at 4, agree with 1 & 2.

Your sentiments regarding 'Hide in Your Shell' are mine exactly. This song got me through a lot of interesting times as well. However...I do respectfully disagree with your sentiments regarding 'It's Raining Again'. I like it. The track for me represents a darker theme but presented in a sort of fun and bouncy way. It's catchy..although I could care less for the "it's raining, it's pouring..." part. It adds absolutely nothing to the track and it kind of kills the ending. I would have left it out. Thanks for sharing!!

Agree with your two best, although I would rate Crisis even above Crime of The Century as their very best. Roger and Rick were two outstanding talents, and sad their apart, although perhaps there partnership had run its course. They complemented each other brilliantly, but For me Supertramp is not Supertramp without Roger. He gave the band its signature style and feel, and for me just edged Rick as the bands main creative spark. This is born out by the mediocre albums Supertramp have produced post Roger, and at the same time Roger has continued to write some beautiful Supertramp type songs. This may be a tad unkind to Rick, as his contribution to Supertramps best work is equal to Rogers. For me: 1) Crisis What Crisis 2) Crime of the Century 3) Even in the Quietest moments 4) Breakfast in America
