Another honest and helpful video, Brook , thank you ! Wow, here we clearly have blatant discrimination, right in front of us - students having to tone down their „ Asian-ness „- what a shame ! I am not Asian , but I admire how nearly all Asian parents in our schools put their families and their kids‘ education above all, often denying themselves things that most American parents never would, all so that their kids get the best educational opportunities- only to be penalized for that !!! Shame upon the system that puts these intelligent , hard-working kids in a position to hide their ethnicity instead of proudly displaying it !

You articulated this very sensitive subject very well. I’m African American and my youngest daughter was accepted into Brown ED ‘27. She is an IB student with excellent grades, a leader (or Founder/Creator) in 6 organizations, has worked at the same job for 2 years, and the creative position she took in articulating her story, blew me away. She went test optional. So I agree with your assessment.

@@badereric The SAT gives significant advantages to successful families. Obviously an expensive tutor that most families can't afford makes a big difference. (If it didn't there wouldn't be an industry devoted to it). What is an SAT score proving? Knowing obscure vocabulary words won't help most people in life. Knowing Algebra II and Geometry won't help the vast majority of people in life.

@@greg8354 The vocabulary section of the SAT (which I agree was bad) was removed a while ago. Regardless of what knowing algebra II or geometry does for you later in life, the fact of the matter is that if you can't learn algebra II you are not going to be successful in college. The SAT is the ONLY standardized and the most fair thing in the college admissions process. I have spent $0 on private tutors, private admissions counseling etc, go to an underfunded title 1 HS and I was still able to score a 1590 in one take with khan academy as my only study material. While I can't deny that there is some benefit attached to tutoring and the like, the benefit one gains from receiving SAT tutoring can't compare to things like having nonprofits set up directly by one's parents (my point here is that extracurriculars are a good example of something that is much easier to game for someone who is very wealthy or whatever.) The main selling point of my college application was my academics (4.0, 1590) because my ECs and honors were extremely weak (I didn't even know about things like AMC until senior year for example) I apologize for my initial aggressiveness. I just don't think comparing racism to a college admissions exam is ever appropriate.

Very interesting and informative video. Affirmative action has definitely been a hot topic in college access lately. If it goes away, and one of the factors used to determine eligible and diverse students suddenly becomes their social economic background, I imagine that would be a very challenging road to go down. I work in college access, which essentially means that we work with high school students in low college attending regions to try and get these students to complete their financial aid applications, get access to scholarships, and eventually go to college. The main demographics we serve are Hispanic and Vietnamese. One of the great challenges is that many students are first generation and do not have resources at home or the navigational capital to figure out how to get access to financial aid and be on track to attend college. More so, we have found that certain demographics are not trusting of things that they feel are too good to be true and that financial aid it’s something they don’t trust. It’s all very complicated. We can promote our services and go into classrooms and work with students one on one to try and help them start their financial aid journey, but getting them to finish, and getting their parents on board to support them, is the battle unto itself. Honestly, The struggle of Trying to get students to accept aid could be a 20 minute video onto itself.

Even if you don't check a box (unfortunately) sometimes a distinguishing factor is your "sir" name which can still identify your ethnicity on an application. Its very sad that people are still judged on race in this country and a lot of colleges including the IVY league schools really need to take a good look at there demographics.

Thanks Brooke, I watch your videos everyday and I find them really helpful, and especially this one. I wanted to ask you a question if it's okay. The thing is that you said students from an underrepresented minority should write their essays about their background. I am from Ethiopia(which is in Africa in case you don't know) and according to what you said, African-American students are one underrepresented minorities. So talking about background, what things could be "backgrounds" that I could use in my essay. Are they ...like....economic backgrounds, or cultural backgrounds.......... I'm out of thoughts and I really want you to help me on this one, if I'm not being rude. Thanks!

My Question: For the Biracial Caucasian/East Asian applicants: What do we do when the checkbox is gone and the last name is obvious Asian? How can the applications not be judged prior to anyone even getting to know the applicants/the admissions team reading beyond their last names without bias? My rant: bc this will soon be my children’s reality…so frustrated for every Asian and biracial child that has to battle this now and in the upcoming years; all the applicants’ exceptional work, effort (most likely done in extreme environments & pressure while straddling two cultures!) disregarded because of their race (or a part of it)…I just…my heart…breaks for these kids.

I think we should have specialized schools for Engineering and Medical studies like India and China. In these institutions we can have academic excellence as 75% importance in the application. Anything humanity or (some unemployable) personally enriching degrees can have this ridiculous “diversity is the strength” application style! BTW we need to see “racism” in context-as in people in every group can be racist towards another group. So this “brown” or POC special treatment because they gave “racism” is soon going to be out of context in a multicultural society where nobody is a super majority like in most big cities /states in USA

What is the “valuable” thing that a URM brings just based on their race? This is getting so crazy in America that instead of really following MLK advice “judge me for my character and not my skin color”, we are not literally judging admission applications on skin color because apparently if you are a special color we call you “URM” and deem you worthy of admission over someone who needs to pay the price of the hard work and ethics their race as a group established in society!

You are wrong! It is not in the interest of under represented minorities to be known as such. This will increase your chances for being _USED_ as a token. If you can not get in without the underrepresented label, then it is in your best interest go to some other school where you can make it without covert quotas. If you get in without the preparation because the schools wanted to make their numbers look good, then you increase the risk that you will flunk out, or be forced to downgrade your major. You want to go somewhere you know in your gut that you belong there. Better to go to a lower rated school where you can make it without help than risk be used as a token by some high class school. But your school councilor won't tell you this. It is good for the career of the school councilor, to be the councilor of someone who got into Harvard. Everywhere you look, there are people who have interests, that are not your interest. But if you can get into Harvard without the checkbox, then you go in knowing you belong there. By not checking the under represented box, you are forcing the school to evaluate you fairly. I do not really think you should go to Harvard even if you are an Einstein. The court cases show that schools like Harvard are too busy playing political games to be interested in true learning. I think Einsteins should find out where all the Asians that can't get into Harvard are going, and then go there, if they can make it without check boxes. That is where the real academic excellence is.
