This prominent Superman foe is best known for his portrayal by actor Terence Stamp in 1980's "Superman II". In the comics, this megalomaniacal Kryptonian General, was depicted as a traitor who had created an army of robot replicas in order to seize control of Krypton, before being sentenced to the Phantom zone. There, he survived the planet's destruction, only to go on to cause trouble on Earth. Join www.WatchMojo.com as we explore the comic book origins of General Zod.

One of the few instances where the movie version is way more popular than the comic book version. Blade is another example also.

mitrooper Truth is more entertaining then fiction. You would think otherwise because you've never knew the truth. Most people live under an umbrella covering them from the Truth. Call it paradigm. That is the Matrix. Ever since school, we've been conditioned to live in a parallel world, a paradigm, before being allowed to play with the other kids. Most people still do this even after school is over. They never look outside, man... They never look to what's Real...

Two things. 1) Were Zod and the other two the only criminals still carrying out their sentence? or are there actually tens, hundreds, or even thousands of other kryptonians still in the phantom zone? 2) why didn't the people of Krypton, who knew the planet would freak out, all shift into the phantom zone and then send one *adult* away in a pod, with the gun and instructions to get them back out?
@TitanXP
@TitanXP 10 жыл бұрын
This explanation of zod is pretty poor, most of the stuff in the video isn't canon anymore, but regardless.... 1. yes, there are hundred of prisoners in the phantom zone. 2. They had no idea their planet was going to blow up. Jor-el found out but it was too late to do anything and no one believed him. Honestly, Zod's origins are better explained (and over-all revamped) in the 5 part comic book Story-arc called "Superman Last son" by Geof Johns and Richard donner. It's a great read and explains everything.
@matthewnelson9702
@matthewnelson9702 10 жыл бұрын
***** I think you missed my point on #2. If they all went into the phantom zone and sent an adult away (instead of a child), then they would've been able to be freed very quickly, once that adult reached somewhere safe. So the 'mad eventually' probably wouldn't of had time to happen. It would essentially be pokeballing everyone (admittedly in a torture realm...) but one person, who would be sent away to open their pokeball, to rebuild. But all that is moot, because apparently they learned too late.
@k9commander
@k9commander 10 жыл бұрын
Matthew Nelson Jor El discovered that Krypton was going to be destroyed. He told the council. He even told Zod. They didn't believe him. Zod may have believed him, but would not be able to help Krypton without the council's approval, hence the attempted takeover. Krypton blew up the same day Zod was sent to the phantom zone. By then it was too late.
@BigBadMonkey23
@BigBadMonkey23 9 жыл бұрын
That does make a lot of sense from our perspective, but they probably only sent the very worst of their people and other races into the Phantom Zone. And I don't imagine any of them would be happy to see the people who punished them to that hell. The thing that always bothered me was that, as a highly advanced species with numerous worlds under their rule (I assume anyway, from the Man of Steel film), that they couldn't simply relocate their population and government to a new world. I know that, like Matt Nelson and Joe Whip above stated, Jor-El found out too late that their world was doomed and nobody believed him. But that still doesn't mean that the entire Kryptonian race was destroyed. Superman has cousins and clones up the fucking ying-yang, so it's quite possible that there is a surviving colony somewhere (and not something ridiculous like an entire world shrunk down to the size of a marble - its fantasy, I know, but still).
@k9commander
@k9commander 9 жыл бұрын
Madalin Grama My mistake. I was not going by comic origins. Still, the council didn't believe Jor El, so using the Phantom Zone to escape would not have worked.

I don't care what anyone says. Terence Stamp will *always* be General Zod. Shannon was decent but his portrayal was just a bit too over-the-top and emo for my tastes. Whereas Stamp was far more stately and carried himself with a cocky, arrogant demeanor more befitting of a general. Stamp plays Zod in a somewhat understated manner that actually makes the character more menacing and intimidating. Not once did I feel threatened by Shannon's Zod. And don't give me any of this bullshit about MOS Zod being more _realistic_ either, this is still a comic book character we're talking about for christsake.

@Shenruss
@Shenruss 9 жыл бұрын
I'll agree Shannon portrayed him more "realistically", in terms of how a genetically programmed soldier would act in the interest of his people, but I *still* say Terrence Stamp gave the definitive performance. He essentially set Zod's parameters as a brilliant, serious minded soldier on Krypton who became a megalomaniac with a God-complex when he was given his powers on earth. It made for the better movie, with a more layered performance. Sorry; "Kneel before Zod" still stands after 40 years
@rocksteel9238
@rocksteel9238 9 жыл бұрын
One reason I think micheal shanon was the best was because when you look at the previous zod he really doesnt have the whole soldier vibe even though he's supposed to be a general he talks and dresses like a stage performer understandable from that era of over acting. But with shannon he really embodies that whole rough, gruff no nonsense military attitude. Come to think of it Zod Man of Steel for supervillian he really wasnt much of a liar I mean he told Jor-El exactly what his plans of domination where and when he met superman he was totally honest of what his intentions would be and the result that would follow this actually breaks the basic super villain formula.

I totally agree. My interpretation of the society as told by the movie is that Zod was born to be a military leader, and most leaders are supposed to be great tacticians but not necessarily the best warrior. While Faora was a warrior that rose through the ranks because of talent, and General Zod saw that in her and made her one of his lieutenants.

The reason kryptonions use the phantom zone and the projector is because on that planet they don't use the death penalty anymore for criminals. The phantom zone is like a limbo prison. The criminals in there are like phantoms. They can't hurt each other, they don't age, and they can't break out. The scene with the missile exploding is from the Richard Donner director's cut. I have the DVD.

The General is Dru-Zod , Lor-Zod is his son with Ursa better known as Chris Kent . It would be interesting to see them dealing with that storyline in the Man of Steel Universe considering how Shannon`s Zod feels about naturalbirths .

I totally agree but, General Zod from the first two movies, it's a unique take on him.
