A central point in the Declaration of Independence is rulers derive their authority from the people and not from God, and governments “derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.” This bold statement was an explicit, and clearly understood, rejection of Divine Right and the right of the King of Great Britain to rule over the colonies. This was also one of the reasons why God is not mentioned in the Constitution and we were never to have a king (and his attendant Divine Right) under the laws of our new government.

I listened to a good bit of it. I thought the best question to counsel came from Justice Jackson to Trump's lawyer. To paraphrase 'There has been a lot of discussion about the need for some kind of immunity for official presidential acts as opposed to private acts. Wouldn't immunity against prosecution of presidential conduct, even for official acts, potentially turn the most powerful office in the world into' a seat of criminal activity'? She discussed how the president consults with the best lawyers on every decision and how EVERYONE ELSE in government is subject to criminal prosecution for their official acts, I thought her comments and questions were solid and to the point.

Let's be crystal clear about this case. This is not to determine if presidents do or do not have immunity. It's enshrined in the Constitution. This case is simply to determine if the cases against Trump were in his capacity as candidate or president. That's it. And based on the evidence, all the cases brought against Trump were about when he was a candidate. None of his crimes fall under presidential duties so there's really no case. It should've been thrown out by now but of course, since it's the highly partisan SC that's not the case.

alito is trying real hard to save trump’s skin in the hearing… … …. recognizing that it is more important to let a former fill his time the way he wants (campaign) than to seek an answer to his pasr conduct’s legality…. .. jeez … he does not hide his toughts

I listened to some of the proceedings today and it sure appears to me that the conservative justices aka rightwing trump supporters are going to grant him full immunity. Sickening and frightening.

The way Trump is allowed to play the system is truly sickening. This nonsense shouldn't even be considered by SCOTUS. Instead we're actually wondering what that bunch of clowns will decide.

President Gerald Ford also famously pardoned former President Richard Nixon for Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal. Neither Ford’s decision to issue such a pardon, nor Nixon’s decision to accept it, would make any sense if Nixon were immune from prosecution.

Presidential immunity only apply to matters of the state and not his own self interests. Especially one with an intent to commit crimes. Trump should not be shielded by immunity from prosecution. As simple as that. Don't complicate matters. Get him good.

The obvious issue is not whether one party can acuse another and place opposing candidates in jail...! The issue before the court ahould be solely on laws being broken. Did someone do nothing for over three hours while the capitol was being attacted resulting in death and distruction? Did that someone suggest that metal detecters be removed because they were not threating himself? The SCOTUS should rightfully decide in a case by case situation, not whether one party is attacing another party - but whether a person or parties has conspired, directed and was complicent in a violent action. In the future SCOTUS may again decide on an issue. This is a slam dunk conspiracy to subvert, as 62 lawsuits agreed, was a fair election. This obviousness of the former president accusing the rigging of elections goes back to 2012. This recent history lesson has eluded the Supreme Court...
