Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com. Next, we’re showcasing the Supro 1605R Reverb 1x8 combo. The Supro Reverb is a mean five-watt class-A rock machine that makes itself at home in both the stage and the recording studio, The Supro Reverb gives you a full complement of four tubes including two 12AX7 and one 6V6 output, along with a 12AT7 that drives a hearty reverb section that sounds just like the mojo-drenched spring tanks found on classic records. Three tube-driven line outputs sit right before the master volume, and each has a specific function. The Reverb output gives you 100 percent wet reverb signal that you can send to another amp or FOH to expand your sound. The Dry output delivers completely dry preamp signal that's ideal for direct recording or adding tube drive to any amplifier, like the one-knob Supro 1606 Super. The Mix output combines the two and includes a variable level control for precise attenuation. The team over at Supro went to great lengths to ensure the authenticity of the eight-inch speaker in both amps, traveling to Iowa State University to laser scan and recreate a "golden example" of a seamed cone vintage Jensen from the 60's. And just like all Supro’s amplifiers, the Reverb and Super are both designed and assembled in the USA.

This is an old demo, but for anyone browsing for one of these amps, the Supro '64 Reverb has a mix line out that you can run into the IR device of your choice and get really great tone at reasonable volume. Yes, 5 watts is still very very loud, generating 100+ dB. I experimented running the mix line out into my strymon iridium with the amp sim off and have gotten outstanding results. Truly killer. Of course, there are many other options if you want just a pure amp sim and IR (Friedman IRX, etc.). but if you also want a cool little amp, it can do the modeling thing too.

I guess it depends on the construction. The little ENGL 15 watt Gigmeister Heads are $800 + or - Please do not go to Carr USA or Victoria amps. You'll have a heart attack. LOL I'd pay $1200 for a used Carr 10 watt amp combo, they are made super. These days you get what you pay for.

It's a relic from the early electric guitar days when people would stand behind their amp to play. It's not a great feature on a modern amp but it is historically accurate to the way the original supro amps were made

Sounds terrific. Anybody tried it at high gain with low master? Looking for a solid home amp for use with a fair number of pedals (mostly modulation) Thanks
@LeviBulger
@LeviBulger 6 жыл бұрын
Tom D Dubai I can't speak for this amp in particular, but I owned the 1622RT which has a very similar architecture and it took pedals extremely well. For recording, Supros new line of small amps are amazing. Fuzz sounded great, modulation even better, but the Supros natural breakup is why you'd want this amp. Probably the most dynamically rich clean tones I've ever created were on that tremoverb. Random pick attacks would generate this unique harmonic that I've never heard from before or since. I will say that the reverb on Supros are quite different than that of a fender or Vox so you may or may not like that. Also, overdrive boxes need to be tamed way way more than most other class A amps. It distorts easy.

I have this exact amp and the cleans are beautiful at any level, but the breakup from the gain needs help from the cranking of the master level to distort the speaker (or whatever that magic is). So you need it loud for the juicy breakup, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sound good at low volumes, just not as good :) You'll have so much fun with this amp. I'm looking forward to trying out some pedals with it soon.

You certainly could, but it’s all about what one needs. A US made 5 watt tube amp this size with these features is not easy to come by. It is a little steep, which is why I got mine used (near mint) for a few hundred less. It’s an amazing amp.

$1,000? For a 5 watt 1x8 amp??? No thanks. I think someone over at Supro likes the smell of their own farts just a little too much. People used Supros back in the day because they were cheap and sounded pretty good for the money. Why didn't they recreate THAT feature when they brought the brand back? What a joke.

actually, the price of these amps puts them in direct competition with hand wired single ended amps from several makers, these Supros aren't even hand wired PTP like the old ones. I'm afraid Jason is correct on this call, Supro has over-priced these amps!
@angrygoldfish
@angrygoldfish 6 жыл бұрын
Supro isn't necessarily trying to compete with VHT, Fender, or Marshall and their PCB amps like the Junior or Class 5. If you look at Fryette amps, for instance, or Diezel-or any other high-end amp that use PCBs for that matter-they're very expensive. Hand-wired 'PTP' (which can be a nightmare when done poorly, as vintage amps often were) isn't necessarily indicative of quality or prestige. Sometimes using circuits boards is actually pricier and more advantageous. In the case of an amp with multiple routing options, as well as a period-correct speaker and dedicated tube-driven spring tank, it's not going to be cheap unless it's made in Indonesia, and may in fact benefit from using PCBs. Tone King amps are an example of that. Despite being tonally based on vintage amps, they often have complex features. Mark Bartell knew that PCBs would help with that. I think people EXPECT Supro amps to be cheap because they use PCBs and were considered a more affordable brand when they were first introduced-or they are simply entitled individuals who want everything the way they want it and will whine about it if they don't get it. I can understand that, but the idea that "Supro likes the smell of their own farts just a little too much" is absurd just because an amp is not cheap. If the amp was cheaper, it would likely have compromises that many-including the new owners and designers-would not want to make. That's their choice. Calling them arrogant for it is ironically... arrogant.
