Surf Better - make sure your hips can move. Here are the 3 best hip stretches for surfing athletes. This joint complex needs to stay mobile and strong to provide an athletic base for the movements in surfing. Crouch positions, pop ups, full rail turns, the hips need to move well, and stay strong.
The hip joint is a key area for mobility. Here's 3 key hip stretches for surfers addressing specific muscles or muscle groups around the hip joint. Make sure you can move properly through the hip joint, and regain or restore lost movement. Sedentary postures and lack of movement can limit motion, which can then aggravate other joints from increased torque and force dissipation. If you want to keep surfing pain free, moving well, and staying athletically active, make sure your hips move freely.

Nice job Chris, I was doing the old school hip stretches on the back for years!!! I felt like the sitting hip stretch was easier to hit the tight spots and get more out of it. I will start using that instead, seems quicker, more friendly and also more productive.

Thanks Cris, another great informational piece! The deep squat pattern has opened the door to my personal flexibility and mobility. I try doing them on an Indo board or a foam roller and a stacker at the gym. Most people look at me like i'm some fitness wierdo, but i'm well aware of the benefits it provides. Keep these awesome vids coming! Are you certified through NASM or something similar? I became a personal trainer not too long ago and find that most people i encounter; who come in wanting to get strong, can barely bend and have terrible time communicating with their own bodies. All the stuff you talk about, it just makes sense; like it's the most natural and obvious, but then somehow humans as a whole forgot how to be human. To move naturally, to live naturally and just be natural. Anyway, I really dig your delivery of information, It's all clicking and jiving with me, thank you for sharing!

+Hollywood101283 my first cert was NASM years and years ago. good way to get started. lot of paths and options from that point forwards. yeah... people don't realize the disconnect, and it's getting larger. a big part of training is just getting people to see the associations, or lack of them, and getting them to realize it's longer term than just losing 5 kilos.

lately my hips are so sore that I hurt while both sitting and standing, it's very uncomfortable to say the least!! I know this comes from hours of sitting using a microscope, and therefore the sitting is in a stiff posture. I am really looking forward to using your methods to help relieve the tightness and the spasms!!

Thanks for posting these vids, helped me a lot. I have some pretty serious imbalances from surfing. The one muscle I can't figure out how to balance out is the erectors. I'm goofy footed and my left erector is way over developed compared to right, right is almost none existent. I've been to physios and no one can seem to figure it out, at least they're aren't showing me anything effective enough. Is there a way to isolate this muscle? I've been skating and practicing my pop up switch, this actually seems to be more effective than anything else I've been shown.

Also, my left hip is rotated forward (goofy foot), it would be awesome if you can do a video explaining how to counter the hip rotation created from surfing. Seems to be a common theme with surfers. it's causing me some knee and hamstring pain. I can't surf like I use to, sucks!!!!

Surf Strength Coach Those and sea lice are the worst! On my 90/90 i cannot sit up straight - they want me to lay on my side- i am doing it while holding a table - any other way to regress it? Thanks man!

you may just not have the range. for some you need to put a bolster under the hip (of the leg that is going in front of you). some lack enough hip flexion range to get there. bolster it up and see how you go
