Just started surf fishing in San Diego, but have been a lifelong fisherman for about 40yrs+ elsewhere. Your videos are super helpful, and informative, even for this old dog; I'm learning some new tricks! 😂Thank You!

Hello, good sir. I must say, loving your videos. Clear, concise, to the point, yet not boring. I would call it a net positive that you didn't have someone teach you surf fishing. The reason I say that, is because you were able to learn based on what worked and not any myths, beliefs, or otherwise erroneous "knowledge". It is usually better to learn based on factual and first hand experience, than learning someone else's biases, beliefs, or what they were told is the right way. Keep up the good work. I am happy to be a subscriber, and I will definitely be using these apps.

Hi Kevin, thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful comment. I've certainly learned a lot from surf mentors, but I think time on the water has certainly been my greatest teacher...and that philosophy was actually taught to me so I guess it works all the way around!

I downloaded the apps, and love the analysis and intend to use it at my spots. Was already using a tide chart and the Solunar stuff a lot (with limited success), but I like your thoughts on wind and wave height/swell timing so much more. Thank you for sharing. When I used to use the facebooks, I was a member of the California Surf Angler's and learned a lot from that page. Like you, even though I have fished all my life, I started trying the surf a few yours ago without a mentor. Great channel!!!

Hey Dane, thanks so much for the comment. In my opinion, that wasn't a waist of a day in that now you know the type of condition you want to avoid. I've certainly had many a session like that...nowadays I do my best to identify when it might be like that and avoid those days...or adjust what I'm throwing to match the conditions. LC's seem to be best in calmer conditions..at least for me.

I do not fish the surf very often, so for me water temperature, tide changes, and the current flow are the things I look for most when catching bass, for halibut I look on the fish finder for structure, sand bottoms, or troughs. Night and early early morning are always for me the best times to catch fish, less traffic and boats. Wind is a big No Go for me, although fish do like the ripping currents. Tides and weather looking good for lobster this week. I'll text you to set something up.

Hey Benjie! Nice info video. I have a hurt knee and haven't been able to fish much lately, it cant take any wading in waves at all so only getting a little bit of casting in on the super flat days. Probably some loose meniscus material that I may need minor surgery to clear out. I have been flying a drone at the beach a lot and filming Great White Sharks very close to shore! Its crazy how many juvenile small white sharks are up here in my area. They are around 6-10 feet long and swim just behind the breaking waves all along the beach I go to a lot. According to the scientists they are hunting skates, rays, smaller leopard sharks, and maybe halibut. I'll send you some pics and a video when I get one edited and reduce the file size from the huge 4k to something uploadable. Also filmed some Corbina hanging out in gutters right on the shore inside the breaking waves, tried to cast a lucky craft at them but they wanted nothing to do with it, needed to dig up some sand crabs but I was to lazy to scrounge up bait. I think I need tiny crab like soft plastics to catch them on lures, or wet flies that simulate sandcrabs like the fly fishermen use on them.

Thank you for your insight on swells Benjie! I've seen some of the other resources that other YTer's use, and I'm thinking the double-digit intervals might correlate to wave strength, such as surf-forecast that PK uses. I will be out later this morning, and I"m seeing double-digit intervals and the surf forecast is showing wave energy ~200-600. LMK what you think! #TEAMCSA brotha!

BTW, I was in CA for nine months, from June 2021 to February 2022, and I didn't catch a single fish. NOT ONE. I fished 3 different days, tried different baits, and got nothing. I am 45 years old, been fishing since I could hold a pole, and I have never been skunked that bad. It rattled my confidence for sure. I came back home to NC in February of last year, and finally got to the beach last weekend to do some fishing and got a beautiful stingray and 2 whiting. I'm back in the game baby! I could only come to one clear and logical conclusion about being skunked while fishing in CA, and I couldn't believe how obvious the answer was: there are no fish in the Pacific Ocean. Obviously. I was fishing off the Pacifica Pier, and I plan to fish in the Pacific ocean again at some point, as it is a Bucket List item to catch a fish from the Pacific.
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing Жыл бұрын
Oh man what a bummer on the skunks! Given your experience I'd just attribute it to bad luck more than anything else. If you come back and fish here one day, I have no doubt you'll get on em! Tight lines.

@@BenjieKimFishing Oh I will. I plan to do a lot of fishing in my retirement. Me and the wife have been planning on traveling and possibly purchasing some ocean front property here. Definitely not like the homes that are falling into the ocean on the outer banks, but pretty close. There is an island we go to every year for vacation, and we even discussed maybe getting a place on the sound side. I used to fish any and everywhere, but now I only fish at the beach. What is the most popular bait for fishing the coast in CA? I used salted shrimp, cut bait fish, and even some of that fake bait like "Gulp!"...
@slpernie
@slpernie Жыл бұрын
Ive skunked the last 7-8 times i fished in socal. Ive fished breakwalls piers and beaches. Ive picked popular fishing spots with no luck each time. Ive fished high tides low tides early morning at sunset with different types of baits. I havent even had an strong bites. This is very discouraging.
@slpernie
@slpernie Жыл бұрын
Ive been fishing since i was a kid in lakes, deep sea, bottom fishing, top fishing, and shore fishing on the east coast. Id say that cali surf fishing is the most difficult fishing ive ever done. Finding the troughs, cuts, and rip tides are one thing then being able to caste into the cuts with waves, surfers, and seaweed being obstacles makes it even more challenging.

I'm living in Portgual (Algarve westcoast) and although we have great surf, the surf is almost never below 1 meter (+-3 ft) and now in winter even rarely below 2 meter. Does that mean that it's just going to be much more difficult to lure fish in these shores? Or do you have any tips for switching types of lures. Still looking to catch my first good seabass on the lure here!

hey Benjie - do you usually fish with your modified LC or do you usually use the unmodified one?
@BenjieKimFishing
@BenjieKimFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, I rarely use the modified lately as I'm mostly fishing really shallow structure most of the time. However, the modified LC can and will work in all conditions, just gotta adjust for how it swims to avoid excess snagging. I have friends that use it exclusively and do well, I typically save the modified for when I'm fishing deeper water columns.
