Surfing in Oceanside in the summer of '76

The United State Surfboard Championship was held July 31, 1976, in Hawaii. On July 23, TV 8’s sports director Hope Hines reported from Oceanside where five surfers who were going to compete in it, were training. Johnny Boyden was one of them and he told Hines the surf in Hawaii is the best in the world and the competitors were the best in the world-it was going to be a great contest. He was looking forward to testing out the board he made in the Hawaiian waters.
In addition to awesome surf film, our camera spotted a Barbie doll in King Kong’s hand-one of a few impressive sand sculptures...a mermaid, a telephone, and the Greek Parthenon. Big waves, children playing in the sand-a perfect Southern California day in the summer of ’76.

Lived in Oside from 97 -2000. I absolutely loved it. When we first moved there people were like Oceanside ?? Saying it was a gang filled dump !! I didn't see that. I loved Oside !!!

I'm born n raised in Oceanside, I played little league with his brother Bobby Boyden...Bobby used to be one of the best skateboarders in CA. The Boydens owned the 1st surf shop at the Harbor, Mr. And Mrs Boyden are awesome people

I grew up in Oside, I’m only 34 but I sure do miss the days before all the big condos took over the pier.

Born on Camp Pendleton, back in 1956 and grew up in Oceanside,went to Ditmar school and Jefferson junior high and Oceanside high. I spent a lot of time with my friends down by the pier and at Pacific Holiday Land looking for coins in the pinball machines. Sure miss those days Oceanside has changed forever.

I was a rider for John boyden. Johnny Be Good. Harbor surf gallery. I miss Johnny and Mama Boyden and the whole family. Wipeout still lives. Aloha

more! i lived in encinitas near the beach in 76’ and went to Pacific View elementary. body surfed Moonlight Beach waves, a magical time in my life.

Ahh the good old days I have surfed Oceanside since 74 I almost don’t recognize my beaches anymore I just get in early and get out before the crowds come

@@edelarth8320 I surfed the south Getty for a lot of years I used to hang out in front of the washing machine when the tide was low and a swell coming from the north west it was great

You mean Barbie's place in that little row of shacks? On the opposite side of the row, one from the end, was our garage where we made leather belts and also decoupage where we used the finest, piano resin. Ah, good times parting with the boys from Surfer Hill 🤙
