Surgeon's Tips: Stop Fogging & Improve Seal on Surgical/Medical Face Masks
How to video for Medical Students, Nursing Students, and people in general who want to wear medical face masks more like the Healthcare Professionals to minimize fogging, and improve the seal around the mask.
Why is this important? The surgeon, assisting residents, medical students, nurses, scrub techs cannot touch their face mask face or head covering once they “scrubbed in” for surgery.
When operating or assisting in an operation, you will be “scrubbed in” AKA wearing *sterile* PPE (personal protective equipment: surgical gown, gloves.
Your head covering, eye protection and face mask is not considered sterile, so you cannot reach up to your face or head. This will break the “sterile field” and you will need to remove the glove that touched your mask. This is considered bad form and the surgeon or scrub nurse will think you are not experienced.
Ideally you can maximize the fit and comfort of the surgical face mask before entering surgery, to avoid fogging of your eye protection later on during the surgery. Vision is critical. If the surgeon says to retest here or clamp there, but you can’t see through the fog or condensation you may make a mistake.
How does this translate to regular people wearing masks during the pandemic? Once you leave your “safe place” (your home or car) and enter a store or public building or room, you should not be touching your head, face or mask, similar to surgery. So making sure that you are wearing face mask like you are about to help with an operation should minimize any need to touch the mask, until you have returned home or back into your car.
Weaknesses of this video.
1. I didn’t discuss how to carefully remove a medical face mask (already many videos explaining it.)
2. Medical face masks and CLOTH DIY face masks are DIFFERENT and this may not work for Cloth face masks because the cloth is not fluid resistant and the humidity go through the cloth and still fog the glasses.
3. When wearing a surgical face mask in the operating room, the temperature does not change.
Condensation of water on cold metal/glass/plastic
**Some fogging can occur when your glasses get cold from being outside, then when you enter a warmer room the cold glasses will fog up from any humidity in the air and any humidity from the mask. This is similar to why a cold drink gets wet on the outside of the can or glass.
Simple Hack
***This video does not address how to keep your glasses warm. A simple trick is to have a second pair of glasses kept at body temperature inside your coat or jacket. When you go indoors you can remove the cold glasses and wear the warm one. Put the cold glasses against your body to warm it up and it won’t fog up once it is warm.

This works! Also, putting a tissue or square of toilet paper inside the mask, right above the nose, stops the fogging. It catches the moisture.

Thanks! This is the only video on this subject that has yielded any results. Well, positive results anyway. I need to wear a face mask in hospital (and getting there) for an upcoming procedure and the fogging has been driving me made while doing a bit of practice wearing. I had to manipulate the nose wire to carefully conform to my face, but it was worth the effort. There's a little mistiness at the edges of the lenses but it's acceptable.

I'm no doctor or nurse or other medical worker, but I am so thankful for this video. I've watched SO MANY KZfaq tutorials for how to prevent glasses from fogging up while wearing a mask, but they barely helped. I realized that, since surgeons have been using masks (for HOURS) even before the pandemic, a tutorial by a surgeon would be best. Glad I came across your video. This really helped me during this pandemic.

I find a lot of the cloth masks sold that don’t have the metal bar thing that goes over the nose fogs up my glasses and then I actually can’t see. I’m sure many other people have this same problem. Even if I put my glasses over the top of the mask I have problems too. (Due to bone problems I have it’s very hard for me to wear a mask, but in case of an emergency I have to.) I remember a product back in the mid to late 70s (when I was a kid) that was an anti-fog formula for glasses. It would be nice if they still made that.

Thank you. This clarifies things. There are always questions though. There is a doctoral dissertation's worth of issues around untrained, unsupported people wearing any old piece of cloth in the grocery store and why we are told to do it anyway. Flattening the curve and so on. Pages of: yes but . . ., at the same time . . ., if this, then . . . Eventually I just decided to give it my best try and stop bothering people. Good luck and love to everyone. The bubonic plague came to an end and so will this. That's not much consolation, I know. 💖

Thanks for starting your very informative video in such a delightful way! Now that I can keep the fog off my glasses, I just need to learn how to take the mask off without simultaneously pulling off my oxygen and losing my hearing aids. That would be a fun video!
@GeorgeYangMDNYC
@GeorgeYangMDNYC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joan, Another person commented about losing hearing aids also. They were commenting on one of my other mask videos, where I show how to make a headband using small rubber bands. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9l7mqaZrNe6nGQ.html Here is their comment: Cosens-Prior • 7 hours ago There is a slight problem with this method. All the Kitchen paper roll I have bought is only 9" square so it makes the mask too small ie too shallow to go under your chin. Also the elastic bands are not good for people with BTE Behind the ear Hearing-Aids as the elastic can too easily flick them off! At £3000 for a pair for digital hearing aids this is not good news if they get pulled off and drop in the street. Though I do like the idea of linked elastic bands to make a strap for the top or back of the head that was a brilliant idea. I will need to figure out a way to connect the rubber band chain to a regular disposable mask.

Thanks Doc. In addition to helping with mask fitting, you also answered another important question I had. I used to wonder why reacement knees could not be implanted until someone was almost dead, opposed to the years they would actually use their knees. After listening to your "non-mechnical" description of how to fit the mask....I realized; Dr.s are not mechanics, and Biomedical engineers aren't carpenters. Maybe multiple disciplines should collaborate on knee and hip parts as well as masks.
