Take it from 40 yr veteran of Aussie highways. Kangaroos don't attack bright lights. They become disoriented by the lights and take off in any direction. Of course a koala is not a bear. Great video. See

Agree with you Ian but I have my own theory about roos and headlights. When I was trucking I always dipped my lights when I spotted them just off the road. The reason I did that was, a lot of the ones that jumped in front of my truck were doing so because they were being spooked by the shadows that moved when the high beam was on. Of course this theory is thrown out the window when the dopey ones just stayed on the road.

I grew up hating people who said 40 years of experience or 40 years a veteran. I thought what a tosser. Now as I approach 60 years of age I think..... damn what a lot of things I have experienced in the last 60 years. I don't believe half the stuff ...and I was there for it! I told a story a few years ago at a party about a two week hunting trip a couple of hours west of Broken Hill and everyone thought it was just an old man telling party stories....Then I found the old pictures a couple of months later......

I spent my youth/university years in Brisbane - my favourite Oz city. I worked as a portrait artist @ Expo ‘88 and lived in West End. I saw the transformation of South Bank to what it is today. Brilliant.

Gooni Googoo thanks … I’m old enough to vaguely remember South Bank prior to Expo - it was as I recall old wharves and warehouses and not a place you would go @ night. I’m not saying that I like all of the changes to the river scape (I go back every Xmas to be with family but, I fear not this year) but I think Bris has pretty much got it right.

Those plant arch thingies all through Southbank have fairy lights all through them - so all of them light up at night and it's super pretty. Definitely photo worthy.

I'm an American and my son married a Qld lady . he lives in warrana. We've been over twice and lived every second we were there ! Aussies are the best ! I was born and raised in southeast Texas , and going to Australia is like going home for me . Friendly people , great food , great beer !!! And fantastic ocean fishing !!!! Barra and chips fir ne !!!

Southbank Park, where the pool is, was the site for the World Expo in 1988, they have done a brilliant job re developing it to what it is today, it is stunning at night

It's really funny because the site of where that rainforest in South Bank is today used to be factories 40 years ago. They've done a really good job at renewing the area.

I loved in Sydney for the first 30 years of my life. Moved around a bit and been in Brisbane for the last 25 years. I love it. So many birds, lizards and in certains places, kangaroos!

The history of the South Bank Parklands is that the whole area was resumed by the State Government as the site for World Expo 1988. It was a semi-industrial, low income housing area with a high Indigenous population. There were lot's of protests over people being displaced from affordable housing and the impact on the local Indigenous community. After World Expo was finished the area was 'returned to the people' and the Parklands built. As the Parklands has a major railway running close by it is very popular with people who can catch the train in and is very accessible to many outer communities of Brisbane.

I grew up in Brisbane 🙂 but live in Melbourne now. I'm sure that by now ppl have told you they're pronounced "Brisb'n" and "Melb'n" 🙂 Glad you had a great time in both cities!

Koalas in the wild can actually be very aggressive! If you ever come across one its best to leave it alone! If it needs help or is injured there are koala-help hotlines you can call to get someone qualified to come out to help it 🐨

Fun Fact... Americans memorialized Captain James Cook too, in the form of the TV show "Star Trek". Hints are in the captains name "Captain James Kirk" and the ship was called "Enterprise" against Cook's ship which was named "Endeavour". Also, the other characters are based on Cook's crew. The main writer of the series was a complete Cook junkie and studied his life and the history of his voyages.

great video of gold coast and Brisbane also known as BrisVegas South bank where the beach is was the old Expo 88 site it's nice to have a beach in the centre of a city, Loan pine is where you could of seen kangaroo's and Koala's the plaques at the Captain Cook memorial are ships that were sunk of the Australian coast during the war. thanks for showing Brisbane as it is a vibrant city

As someone who sees kangaroos every day, they aren't dangerous. I keep an eye on their body language, they'll let you know if you're too close.

Bris-ben, also the lights blind the roo and they just jump.. sometimes they do a bit of a circle and slam back into the side of your car. Also, rough guide to convert C to F.. multiply by 2 and add 30 :)

@@HappyHoppe Hehe, there are lots of brilliant fish 'n chips shops all along the Redcliffe Peninsula. If you drive along the any of the beach roads along Sandgate and Redcliffe you'll find one almost every block (that's not an exaggeration, lol - some blocks have more than one). www.dougsseafoodcafe.com.au/ is one that I and the locals frequent often. It's not touristy looking but the fish 'n chips are good. If you want a more flash joint (upmarket) I've been to The Famous Fish Pan, which I enjoyed. I don't live local (I live in Brisbane South, but am a frequent visitor), so there may be better ones (the locals always know the best). It's great eating fish 'n chips and with a view of the ocean. Also takeaway and eating them sitting on the beach is pretty awesome, and quite traditional in South East Queensland. When I was a child, we got fish 'n chips wrapped up in newspaper. If you Google "fish and chips redcliffe/moreton bay/sandgate/shorncliffe" you'll find literally a dizzying number of joints to choose from. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!!

Tourist tip #2 - If you get to Noosa which is a luxury beach area north of Brisbane, give the trendy shops a miss for a morning and go to the tourist information centre and book a ticket for the morning Tin Can Bay boat trip. It's an early morning boat trip through the Noosa canals and it gets you to Tin Can Bay in time for the two wild dolphins who visit most mornings to get hand fed by the tourists. On the way you'll learn about the dolphins and their history. If you do go give the cranky Pelican that also lives there a wide berth.

check out glasshouse mountains, mount coot-tha, mount tamborine and mount glorious. you should also try and make a trip out to bribie, moreton and north/south stradbroke islands if you can.

@@HappyHoppe Lol! Bribie is Bribie Island, just off the southern end of the Sunshine Coast an hour north of Brisbane. North Stradbroke Island is a bit further south, a ferry ride from Brisbane, and has the most AMAZING beaches on the side that faces the Pacific Ocean.

Hey guys, good to see you enjoyed my home town of Brisbane...and it's pronounced BRIS-BIN fyi haha. The little yellow men and women are a safety movement created by civil construction firm Fulton Hogan, and now being taken up by several other firms across the South East of Queensland

The little yellow figures on the side of the motorway are a safety measure installed to prepare motorists for the appearance of construction workers (who wear fluro yellow workwear) in the area. The M1 & M3 from Gold Coast to Brisbane has been under construction for years :(.

Number one rookie tourist mistake ............... go to Brisbane and don't get to Stradbroke Island .............. accessible by public transport from Brisbane. Go on the gorge walk big chance to see dolphins, whales (if right time of year), Mana Rays, Eagles and heaps of other wildlife.

You made me laugh, Kangaroo charging the car 🤣. The only time you would get in trouble with a Roo would be if you put yourself in between a two Alpha fighting it out over a mate. Americans are funny and Aussies love taking the piss out of you!

Happy Hoppe It’s how we roll as Aussies Hon, we love the thought of leaving our Mates (or visitors in your case) believing something knowing you’ll find out its bullshit and either laugh or doh! That’s the humour we have. The best bit is though when you tell us the story after the fact when you did what we said and we howl laughing 😂 We are a little warped yet it’s all done in much jest, fun and love. Happy trails x

I live in suburban Melbourne and there are literally hundreds of roos all over our suburb (which is next to a large reserve). It’s very common for them to jump out at night unfortunately and the most dangerous thing you can do is serve to miss them- we’ve totally 2 cars over 10 years thanks to Roos jumping out at us! I’ve never turned my lights off may I should next time though...

A koala is not a bear. Also a car 'trunk' is a 'boot' in Aussie (or most of the old British Empire countries). ps. the 'hood' of a car is also a 'bonnet'.

Please that you enjoyed Brisbane {Pronounced Brisbin in Aussie} Just two corrections folks; Kangaroos don't 'charge' cars, if they are on the road they freeze up when seeing headlights coming towards them and Koalas aren't bears as they are marsupials. See you in Brisbane next time for the Olympic Games in 2032.

I'm from the Gold Coast and now live in Brisbane, so this was a nice video to watch! You were disappointed by not seeing surfers at Surfers Paradise. Thing is, you're probably much more likely to see surfers at Burleigh Heads - where you waited for the airport bus. I think that's one of the best beaches on the GC. Also you can pretty reliably see a mob of wild kangaroos at a spot in Currumbin Valley, which is also a really beautiful area. BTW that lizard is an Eastern Water Dragon. They're pretty harmless :) You wouldn't want to get scratched or bitten by one I suppose but they'd run away from you before they tried something like that - you'd probably have to try picking it up to get hurt by it. I think with most of Australia's wildlife it's a 'live and let live' type of thing.

Oh, I forgot to say too that Point Danger (where the Cook Memorial Lighthouse was) is a popular whale-watching site during winter. Last year when I took a Swedish tourist there we also saw a pod of dolphins :)

For anyone reading this, in the Gold Coast, you can drive to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Reserve and see hundreds of kangaroos in the wild. You can also see koalas in the trees but you need good eyesight as they sit up high in the eucalyptus trees and camouflage well. It is free, but you will need a car to get there as it is in the northern area of the Gold Coast.

It's a real buzz for a 78 y/o man born and bred in Sydney, Australia, and now lives in Western Australia to see young people coming to our country and enjoying themselves. Kangaroos are really nocturnal and spend most of their time is spent feeding at night and laying around all day. (like some humans, e.g. my teen age grand kids). If you approach a Kangaroo in your car at night on a road and it wants to run, it almost always will run where it can see, usually in the lights from your car. Humans are the same. That's why sometimes drunks and burglars get run over with cars (I think)

Fun Fact: Captain James Cook was not a captain. He was a Lieutenant. The person in charge of a navy ship is called the Captain which is why he is usually called "Captain Cook" but his rank was 3 steps below captain. His correct name and title was Lt James Cook. Even today only the person in command of the largest ships in the Royal Navy (i.e. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales) are Captains.

Wrong Wrong! You dip your lights too low beam with Kangaroos at night. But as a long-distance road-train driver, I have found the bright Led lights used today, stops them from hopping out in front of you.

Kangaroo's don't charge as such but they get blinded and freaked out so do tend to run straight into your car which can do some serious damage! Also I'm from brissie and have no idea what those yellow people are on the side of the road, always wondered myself!

They have a beach in the city because the ones on the Redcliffe Peninsula and Sandgate are into Moreton bay so they're very shallow and don't have waves. Also they just could because why not. Also brisbane is a very tropical city so rainforest is common. Also you should've gone to Mt Coot-Tha is you didn't

When you were at the Captain Cook Memorial you forgot to mention that it is placed right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales. And in summer there is a one hour time difference between the 2 States. Great vid though. There are plenty of wild Kangaroos in Wacol just south west of the city.

Mick Morley...Perhaps you have no idea or understanding of Kangaroos at night, they are mostly night animals...Yes, kangaroos are dazzled by the bright lights of your car headlights, just turning your light off for a very short moment on a bush road will almost always frighten the kangaroo away from your position, they will only hear the noise from your vehicle when the dazzle stops momentarily. I was a kangaroo shooter in western Queensland for a short time long ago and often engaged in this technique on lonely country roads at night... carefully. Switching lights on and off quickly is usually enough to get them to run in the opposite direction from your car noise, much better than them putting their heads through your car radiator. Sorry if you think I'm stupid, you could reconsider your appraisal of me? Be happy, don't worry. On a lonely stretch of road in the South West bush of western Australia where I live now, it is not uncommon on a `100 km road trip at night to encounter 100 or more kangaroos licking the due off a sealed road. You turn the light off for one second and blow the horn and off they go away from you, flat tack. 5 minutes later they are back. Radiator still working? It is not a good idea to drive around on lonely country roads at night at high speed in Kangaroo land. 70/80 KPH is usually ok. Oh by the way, all my life I have always called Koalas, Koala bears even if they are not bears as just about all Australians do and I'm second fleet background. Only Johnny- come- lately to Australia leave the bear part off. Don't be so pedantic? If you want to be technically correct they are Koala Marsupials.
