Surprised by some of the wait times around the park. Expected something a little different. We'll tour the entire park. Every land and every attractions. Along the way we'll talk about Disneyland Forward and the vote from the city council. We'll contemplate ideas for new themed lands and attractions, and give our thoughts on the new lightning lane scanners installed at Little Mermaid. It's our State of DCA report.

I wish Disney would repair and utilize all of the areas that remain empty and unused in the parks. Especially in Tomorrowland in Disneyland and the Hollywood area in DCA. Bring back the shows! Repair or reinvent the people mover, add some children's rides, meet n greets, or themed play areas in empty buildings. These would ease the ride capacity issues and they would be great on bad weather days. I'm excited for new lands, but I'd love to see the magic come back to the areas which have been forgotten and neglected for so long!

I agree. Take care of areas already in the parks…utilizing areas before expanding more into new land

Doing that would take even more rides offline because you’d have to close them to fix everything around it. Tomorrowland in particular, the PeopleMover goes in and out of a lot of show buildings and you would have to close down all of them for renovations. Not to mention you might need new permits and then you have to bring stuff up to current building code and it goes on and on.

@@untexan I think it could be done in sections, especially with the people mover. It was once a ride, so how difficult could it be to repair it? If the ride is absolutely not repairable, perhaps turning it into a non human, alien only, transport system or something that could run on the track with characters and sound effects which would add to the overall theme, so it doesn't stand empty and deteriorate further. Look at how much of the park is currently closed with Haunted Mansion and all of Critter Country closing for the new Tiana ride and new shops etc. I think people would be patient if the overall outcome improves the park experience. Some of the other parks around the world have themed areas and rides completely indoors so why not use all of the empty buildings? Add shows, meet n greets, activities, if all else fails! I remember going to the Frozen area meet n greet with Olaf where kids could build a snowman, toboggan down a snow hill and do other activities. How about archery with Merida? The character/activity ideas are endless! Why not have a Pirate's League like in Florida where you can get a makeover to become a pirate! You could have a meet n greet with Jack Sparrow and Redd! The Disneyland Hotel used to have themed tea parties at Steakhouse 55 and excellent fine dining. Now a thing of the past. It's great to talk about new additions for the future but as David said in a previous video, he may be dead before they come to fruition.

Some of the new lands will replace these areas. They’re not going to invest in spaces that have active plans for large-scale demolition, renovation, or expansion.

If avatar were to go into backlot, I good monorail idea would be to make a tunnel to go through, with avatar-themed decor inside, that promotes that part of DCA to DL guests! 😍

We found the Food Court area of San FranSokyo is always a Zoo now. Not enough room for all the Ques…like a crossword puzzle. Even with Mobile Ordering you have to navigate your way to and from the pickup window.. and pray up you find a table after you order.

This video made california asventure look so fun. Somehow over the past 20 years the park has really become beloved for what it is. Fun even if its a little cheap. Lile, look at the crowds in that food court for big hero 6! If they add a pandora land an an avengers e ticket it will become a top tier disney park!

We were just at Tokyo Disneyland --- seeing Tow Mater's Junkyard Jamboree reminded me of the Baymax ride there, which is essentially the same ride, but with different theming... that Baymax ride had an 80-minute wait nearly the entire day... nearly as long a wait as Space Mountain. No other explanation than the park attendees there must really love them some Baymax.

Yea, that was a horrible idea. I think people liked it because it seems a little similar but they’d have to demo all of the trees, etc so it really isn’t great.

They will NOT replace grizzly peak. Those trees all grown in, all the infrastructure, absolutely no way. Would love it to have an avatar land in dca inADDITION to the beautiful forests of grizzly peak and the desert of carsland. More nature and less concrete is needed at dca

I feel the same way. Not to mention the icons of Soarin’ and GRR. It makes no sense. Plus the tie-in to the Grand Californian. That would be too damaging to the park. The backlot makes way more sense. Or Disneyland Forward.

@blubba818 i think dl forward. Backlot can become zootopia or something else down the road like wakanda. Otherwise ur ripping up that urban type infrastructure to build a forest, and then at some point in the future theyd have to build another city environment from scratch in dl forward

We were at DL and DCA 4/15-4/18 and the lines were long and the parks were really full. I just checked the times and they are much lower now. Kind of a bummer, but I wonder what the difference is since its been just a week. I know this is DCA video, but your Space mountain/thunder mountain rope drop strategy worked out perfect. thanks for the tips!

they did a decent amount of work to Mermaid. there were planters in the entrance that were removed to make it wide enough for two lanes. an emergency exit was removed with a few stairs. a gate was then added in between the exit and just past the scanners. walls will soon be up to add a ramp on the west side of the queue.

Bringing back Discovery Bay would be cool to see in DisneylandForward, allowing a mix of IP and original stories. It could even fit in DCA since it is a fictional take on San Francisco (and DCA could really use some park-exclusive characters to create a fanbase of its own, like Disneyland has, rather than depend on fans of movies).

During my last visit in March, I talked to the cast member at the Hiro/Baymax meet and greet, and was told that Baymax was getting extensive repairs. In February, they said the same thing, and that he would likely be back in a few weeks, but the CM said this time that it might not be until next year that Baymax is back. That said, the Hiro actors are always great with kids, and if your kids are into the maker scene at all, all the Hiros we’ve met are good about talking pretty convincingly about robots and building.

If I remember correctly, the plans for the eastern gateway included moving the monorail track so they could add a foot bridge over harbor. Disney seems to be ready and willing to move the monorail. Whatever goes into the backlot won’t necessarily have the monorail running through it.

I've been going on Saturdays in the late afternoon to evening lately. DCA has been quite busy at those times. I have been wondering if they tend to get busier later in the day. Magic Keys (like me!!) might go in the evenings and fill things up.

We were at Disneyland Saturday and the lines were nuts! We never went to DCA because we saw 70-110 minute lines on the major attractions. No idea how you found Guardians at 35 minutes.

We were at DL and DCA on 4/17 and the lines, or at least the posted wait times were long (140 min for Radiator Springs at 6 pm, which we did not wait for.) But once we gave up on finding any E-ticket rides under 45-60 min. we got in line for our favorites anyway. They all ended up being 10-15 minutes shorter than the posted wait times. Guardians had a posted time of 75 and the queue was going into the outer switchbacks. We timed it and we discovered that we were actually finishing the ride at 45 min. That's a 30 min. difference including ride time. So what gives with the posted wait times??? Are they trying to manage expectations or get us to buy Genie+? Both?

Grizzly Peak makes no sense as a site for Avatar. Soarin’ and GRR are both popular attractions that bolster up DCA, and the paired theming with the Grand Californian is too closely tied. I can totally see them doing something with the backlot, but Monsters, Inc. should be moved, not demolished.

My only issue with Hollywood Land is that it would be such an abrupt change from the streets of Hollywood and between marvel campus. They’d have to leave all the building fronts on Sunset, so what kind of entrance could you make thru those buildings to make it make sense?? I hope they do something there, but Pandora just doesn’t make sense to me.

I've ridden single rider on Goofy's. They sat me in the back of a couple. I haven't ever been sat with a group of 3, always a group of 2.

I get what you're saying, but I still think a monorail through Pandora seems weird. But there's nothing stopping them building a tunnel through it. Or having it go into a show building so that the track isn't visible. Not ideal, but doable

My daughter is not much of an avengers fan and she was not expecting to like avengers campus or DCA in general at all but ended up enjoying the ambiance quite a bit. We were visiting from the east coast for a long awaited mother, daughter trip and had a park hopper for four days and I think ended up spending some time at DCA each of those days. Also a belated thank you from your rope drop video for the suggestion to do single rider lines at radiator springs even at rope drop which worked great, single rider also worked well after the first world of color show. I expect your radiator springs recon analysis will support that?

Another option to handle the existence of the monorail is to enclose the monorail portion that would be in this Pandora area

Great vid. Imo, Avatar will go in one of the new 'Forward' areas not the Hollywood Backlot. The jarring transformation is too much to overcome and it's easier to build from tabula rasa for Avatar then spend the EXTRA funds for demolition first. Imo, Disney will bring a version of how Paris is re-doing their 'Movie Soundstage' entry into the newly named 'Adventure World' park to the DCA 'Backlot'. Also a separate Avatar over in the 'Forward' areas would increase guest capacity immensely for the Disneyland resort..

Your multiple mentions of there not being as much to do at DCA versus DL are totally spot-on. I remember when DCA first opened and looking at a map: There were so many shops and restaurants but not many attractions...and so many of those attractions were cheap-seeming carnival style rides. This is the legacy of Disney cost-cutting parks after the initial lackluster response to Disneyland Paris; DCA, MGM Studios in FL, and Hollywood Studios in Paris. It’s still biting them in the butt, I think, with how much money has been poured into Disney-fying DCA and Paris’ Hollywood Studios becoming the new Disney Adventure World. But I still like the vibe at DCA and the Food and Wine fest and Pixar Fest should be fun once I get my Magic Key this year!

We mobile ordered at Flos Twice (both a burger) and i could see it on the counter (no tomato, so it stuck out)-- and no notification for at least 5 min that it was ready to pick up. I didn't want to walk up and be That person, and this delay issue never happened at All the other mobile orders we made that week 🤔 it was weird. At the same time the Not mobile order line was crazy packed, it was around 2pm The cars land landscape was super cool at 8pm, lit up in the dark❤

For some time I have thought they could turn Hollywood Backlot in to an " Animation Land". It would be somewhat like a Fantasyland for DCA. They would use modern movies. Another idea is to have Zootopia, expand Monstropolis, and another "city based setting" IP.

I seriously look forward to these 'state of' vids more than anything other content, TV show, streaming 'anything.' So appreciate your work, joy, and insights, David! From there, with the possibility of Avatar coming to DCA, I had the thought for the first time. Is there any chance we could see the new horribly renamed Paris Studios to Disney's Adventure World come west to erase DCA with a rename as well? I truly hope not but you talking Avatar, I can't help but think it could.

If they do get everything cleared and extend the border of DCA around the back lot, will there still be the check bags area and security? Or will that be done at the new parking structure and then you get skyline lifted in to the promenade?

I do agree that the backlot needs a makeover, but I kind of have a hard time thinking Pandora is going to blend well in that area? I love the old Hollywood vibe, wish there was something better they could do with that space that’s still California-ish. Going from Buena vista street to Pandora and then Avengers just seems like a bit of a weird transition 🫠

If the idea is: "theme an area without current IP, where the attractions can then be turned into future IP" then I'd suggest doing a slightly more YA version of "fantasy" than what we have in the OG Fantasyland. If you've heard of the now defunct Evermore park in Utah, I'd basically do that - but good! I'd cut the "ongoing storyline" stuff they tried there, because I don't think that actually works overall. But, it would look like a really well made ren faire, and I'd populate it with fantasy/mythical characters. We could use the "tiny Tinkerbell" effect they've tested out to have a (non-IP) fairy encounter. I'd resurrect some of the concepts from DAK's "Beastly Kingdom," which iirc included Unicorn and Dragon attractions. I'd also feature interactive elements similar to the "magic" effects at the various HP lands. For food, a tavern feels like a no-brainer, along with stationary snack carts. Lastly, I'd have a land exclusive Princess with a new backstory that could be developed for future film and streaming projects.

I hope Avatar goes into the Backlot if it's going anywhere. The only thing I've ever wanted them to do to Grizzly River Run is add a bigfoot element to it. Nothing huge like the gator in Shanghai but you could put some Harold sized bigfoot animatronics at one or two spots on that ride. Heck, theme it to The Goofy Movie and use *that* bigfoot if they wanted to go for some IP synergy.

The reason why they had to block off the entrance to Little Mermaid was becasue there were planters on the que side of the line allowing only one line.

If Saturdays aren’t busy then why are they almost entirely blocked out for Enchant Magic Key? Or is that why it’s not as busy?

Because they intentionally limit the # of available reservations slots to MKs so that they can sell more full price tickets

🎡 Past Crowds???:...last time I was in DCA...was a weekday, way back in May of 2006...it was entirely empty...I mean Empty-Dead...it was still largely themed as mini tour of California...with the Mission Tortilla Factory...every ride was a walk-on including Soaring California, Tower of Terror, & even brand new Monsters Inc....you could stay seated for multiple rides on California Screamin'...basically saw the entire DCA park before 1:00pm...spent the remainder of the day at Disneyland...

Just an idea for avengers campus expansion, I think the back lot should be turned into a 1940s themed Captain America World War 2 propaganda buying war bonds, hops, have burgers and shakes there, USO shows have more new york food carts. Have cars from that era. I feel like it would be a much better theme than the mess of different things combined.

I do hope the Space Mountain movie is successful and popular. Something that the Tomorrowland movie should have been to pull ideas from, to add/redo TL. My concern with the Space Mountain movie is if they change the design in the movie, would they change SM design in the parks. I'm not really a fan of the upcoming Tokyo redo design.

Let’s start a new rumor. Hyperion theater is on standby waiting for the final vote on Disney forward. It’s fully approved the theater will be demolished as part of expansion of the parks.

Most queues are ADA compliant now so you can queue with your wheelchair. For those that aren’t (mostly old DL rides) you get given a return to queue time and enter through the exit. Mobility issues do not qualify for DAS.
