For me, there is no talk about who is better. All three are masters of the guitar. But I will say that I much preferred Joe's tone to the other two. Now that could be cause it was his show/project, so he had everything he wanted...But, the three together was a gift that they even enjoyed, and as a player myself, that does not happen often, so when it does, it becomes a gift to those in the audience...👍🎸🎶🎵🎼

I saw Tommy and his brother, Phil, play at the Greengate Hotel, in Sydney, back in the early 80s. 2 guitarists, 2 guitars, both playing different parts….seems straightforward, except they each had their left hand on the other’s guitar. It just blew my mind.

Agreed. Funny how the great guitar players themselves never seem to get in an argument over who the "best" is but rather compliment their peers over their talent and experience. I really like Joe because he respects the artform of the blues and those giants who paved the way for him and others. And even though he probably could be worth ten times what he is now if he had sold out to 'the system' and let the corporations mold him into a pop star, he has become a strong advocate for KTBA and works with some of the best musicians in the business. Now if someone would just convince him to contact another music 'rebel', Jennifer Warnes, and see what the two of them could come up with, I could die a happy man!

@@mariodriessen9740 I hate comments like yours, if people feel that an artist is underrated it probably has merit in their eyes. You hearing of a particular musician doesn't mean that enough people know who he is. If I went out and asked 100 people do you think they'd all say they know who he is? I doubt they would, so he is underrepresented or more generally underrated. That's my .02 that nobody asked for but I felt like I needed to call you out on your unwanted .02. Have a nice day.
@mariodriessen9740
@mariodriessen9740 3 жыл бұрын
B. Cook ; I’m sorry I offended you, or anyone. I never intended to offend people. And maybe this will turn into a semantic matter, but there is, in my opinion anyway, a huge difference between being underrepresented or being underrated. I think we all agree that Josh Smith is a fabulous guitarist. And that’s exactly my point. He’s absolutely not underrated, but he is indeed underrepresented. However, you could say the exact same thing about a man like John Scofield, Danny Gatton and even Pat Metheny. Ask 100 random people and you’d be pleased to find two who know all of them. We’re on the same boat here. The only reason I reacted on this comment was to point out the fact that Josh is crazy good and I have never met a guitar player who believed otherwise. So does that make him underrated? Not in my world. And if he is, then he’s not the only person on that stage that’s underrated. And that’s the only point I was trying to make. I’m not a troll and I don’t feel the urge to bash anyone. Do great guitar players (or instrumentalists in general) get the praise they deserve? Absolutely not. Is it our ‘fault’? I don’t think so. I’d be amazed if people who are watching this video will think he’s underrated. Have a nice day. And remember, I’m not your enemy.

When the musicians walk on stage together they aren’t looking to be ‘the best individual’, they are making music TOGETHER. Without the band there’s nothing, without a collective desire to drive the song forward there’s nothing, without communication (either verbal or musically) there’s nothing. These musicians breath this stuff, they appreciate each other’s talents and bring out the best in the song or solo. Watch a great musician and you’ll see give and take, you’ll see a love for the moment and the emotion they create for their audience. This is a unique moment that can’t be repeated, enjoy it for what it is. It’s not a competition.

Interesting how people always frame these jams as "duels" instead of just three great guitarists playing off each other and loving it. It's all subjective and a matter of taste -- because they're all masters! I actually jammed with Tommy once... I was on bass and he played drums. Yes... he's a great drummer too... and always one of the most personable guys I ever met on the scene back in the day.

@@mr.howard1 Yes, I remember Tommy on a PBS show talking about his brother and playing with him together. He's definitely one of my favorite guitarist. Larry Carlton is my other favorite. I saw Larry play twice at a small venue and I luckily both times I was only about 12 feet away from him. I never saw Tommy play live, but I have followed him a long time. It was cool to see him playing electric and in jamming mode. Thanks for the reply. Philip

@@mr.howard1 Steely Dan is another one of my favs as far as bands. Great songs they had. There were so many cool guitar solos on their albums and it was always interesting trying to learn the solos. (Larry of course did many for them, as I am sure you already know). I studied with a jazz guitarist quite a few years here in New Jersey and was into writing and recording jazz fusion type songs in the 1990s. Writing and recording is something I am just getting back into and I have been rebuilding my recording studio to that end. Before photography, I used to rent my studio for a living. Philip

It always amuses me in the comments on these videos... saying , this guy is better than that one. Most times by someone that has never picked up a guitar, and have no idea the degree of difficulty, or the literal years of endless practice that goes into being a top notch guitar player. Every player has their own style, and it’s always fun to see what the others come up with. I wish people would learn to enjoy the music, and stop with their uneducated opinions..

@@josemiguelberrios3640 I did, he uses someone else's song/tune to demonstrate his technical prowess. But it's so over the top that he loses the original composers intention, the music is lost. If you look at California Dreamin' - Michael Chapdelaine - Video (solo fingerstyle guitar) cover; now here’s a guitarist that understands music, he’s recreates the original song in his own style without destroying the original intent of the composer. Basically Tommy is all technical show without the art; he’s like a shredder where after a few minutes thinking how impressive it all is but then left wonder where the music is.

@Robert Patterson Thanks for responding, Robert. I knew that they were gone. I think my point was simply that they all had big egos, Clapton being an exception. I, too, was a major Cream fan in the late 60s. I remember the first time I heard Disraeli Gears. Blues Project Projections and Disraeli Gears made me a graduate of folk music and a rock fan. All I was saying is that when Clapton shared the stage with Buddy Guy at the 9/11 tribute in NYC, he stood behind Buddy Guy out of respect for the man who came before him. I hope that makes sense. You are more of a connasieur of Cream. I may have been younger and certainly not as experienced with rock, so I bow to you! :)
