With its playful attitude, its shimmering coat, its tasselled ears and its plume-like tail, the red squirrel is easily recognisable. Yet, it remains relatively unknown. Throughout the seasons, we follow the daily life of a female squirrel as touching as ingenious.
As the leaves turn orange, the inhabitants of the woods prepare to face winter. Hopping from branch to branch, the intrepid rodent searches for provisions while dodging predators. Apart from her balancing skills, she is also a major protector of the forest. This film highlights the essential and unexpected role of this mammal in maintaining its ecosystem.

I can't help doffing my hat off to all the people who had been engaged in the production of Squirrels in the Ecosystem doc., esp. those photographers who had to spend for nights & days w/ an infinite patience so as to procure those brilliant & unmissable momentous footages one after another in impressive close-ups in the face of some adverse conditions. The rest of the team such as audio men w/ the effective background music, sagacious editors, a keen script writer, & a rather rare female efficient narrator also had done excellent job, but they were able to do so at the opulent comfort of the studio in their own country. That is the core difference from those cameramen. Nonetheless thanks to all concerned, I enjoyed, admired, & appreciated it to the full at the comfort of my residence,,,(10/26/23)

Had it not been for this singular doc., I'd not have had any knowledge about the red squirrel's role in the wild, i.e., its contribution to enhance the forest's ecosystem keeping it in balance. Thanks to it, I've gained new insight into the role of those squirrels in the woods. It's indeed not only educational but also informative. Infinitely grateful & gratified w/ it to the core. The woodpeckers are a very gentle bird from what I’ve noticed and graceful they don’t swoop in they flutter in have never seen them aggressive they don’t even mind the squirrels they simply wait their turn as do the rest of birds at feeders they work around the squirrels lol

I buy nuts for mine and enjoy their acrobatic ways. When one really observes squirrels in action, one can't but be impressed with their talents. I never thought of carrots for squirrels - thanks for the tip.

Squirrels are planting hickory trees all around here but I have no idea where they`re getting them. I found one they buried nearby but I see the baby trees everywhere with no hickory trees in sight.

It would be nice to know what country[s] the footage was taken from. I see the tufted red squirrel, but they are not in Illinois, USA, nor is the Elk, nor the particular Jay coloration, nor some of the other medium sized birds, nor the hedgehog ... and I never saw ice or snow that stayed in place. Are we looking at New Zealand?

@@profd65 My comment was oriented to what was in the video. In THAT location in the video ... they never showed any significant snowfall on the ground ... just a sampling here and there. But you knew that ... Do you also know sarcasm and cheap shots are a bad mental habit ... anger and viciousness management is necessary for healthy relationships. You won't begin to respect yourself until these things are under control.

Hello, thank you for your comment on the documentary. This film was shot over two years in various forests in central France. The red squirrel is a European species and is not present in the United States, where you have the "gray" squirrel, which is much more social and serves a different ecological function. In fact, the American gray squirrel is an introduced species in Europe, and today it poses a threat to the habitat of our red squirrel. As for the birds, the species also vary from one country to another. Jean-Luc Guidoin

@@Jean-LucGuidoin Thank you for the response. In our far Northern area of Illinois [Fox Lake almost borders Wisconsin] I do see grey squirrels but also the red and the black squirrel at times. The past few years however have only seen grey ... both in the trees and as road kill.

Humans are the only creature on the planet that has zero ecological benefit. Every other creature is working towards making the ecology of the planet to be good and humans our only job is to disrupt and destroy. I have tried to be optimistic and try to hunt for just one area where humans contribute to the betterment of all life forms and I can't find one. Kudos to all other creatures like these ones making Earth a better place.. unlike us

I feel you but that's not true, we're a keystone species and have historically had a great impact on our ecosystems. There's a whole exploding field in it called TEK, traditional ecological knowledge, and a lot of beautiful accessible content to learn more. If you want I can plug some of my favorites below:)

I’m not sure why you say “not many squirrels survive the winter” unless they’ve been displaced, as people with no respect for wildlife will kick them out of their territory by caging and carrying them off or trap em if they’re too near their house. Red squirrels aren’t generally a bother they like to keep to the trees where they have plenty to do but they will build nests in rural buildings if they notice there’s little activity. If you want them to move further away just run your chainsaw for a day you’ll see them stuff their cheeks and move out no work required from you they’re very cooperative this way LOL
