Nature of Things

7 жыл бұрын

Not much more than a century ago, in towns and cities across North America, we still hunted squirrels - for dinner! That made them rare, but now that's all changed. Squirrels are a wonderful example of nature adapting to the fast-paced urban life that dominates much of their former territory. And, yet, we pay little attention to these furry creatures that share our city parks and streets.
We see them every day, scurrying around our parks looking for nuts, tearing through our backyards and fearlessly leaping through the air from tree to tree, but most of us know very little about our furry fellow urbanites. What makes them so squirrelly and do they really remember where they bury their nuts? In Nuts about Squirrels, meet the scientists who are foraging for answers. Getting inside their heads to figure out what makes them tick is no easy task, but Joel Brown from the University of Illinois at Chicago, has designed some creative experiments to do just that. He takes advantage of their passion for nuts and seeds to reveal their inner 'landscape of fear' and gives us a tour of a typical backyard from a squirrel's perspective. Perhaps Joel Brown gets some of his squirrel insider information from watching Rowdy - his 'pet' squirrel - "a rehabilitation failure." Whatever it is he's inspired hundreds to become citizen squirrel scientists who are building a detailed picture of North America's squirrels.
The Nature of Things is hosted by the world-renowned geneticist and environmentalist, David Suzuki, the program is in its 55th season, a landmark by any standard

They were part of life for me for years. Thinking it was merely a need to feed changed one day when I was working on a motorcycle in the garage. My best known one, a female, ran at me like a poodle when I walked out the door. Not wanting to interrupt my labor, I tossed a couple of nuts on the floor. She walked right by them and took her spot on my knee, made her usual eye contact and finger squeeze. Companionship was as important as food. To show off for a friend, I stuck a peanut in my mouth. She hopped up on my shoulder and gently took her prize while placing soft paws on my cheeks.

I am not a “professional” in any official way, but sometimes I am amazed at how little the scientists and “experts” seem to know and understand in some documentaries.. I find myself almost yelling at the screen like a sporting event or bad horror film lol I am very glad that more and more people have started trying to understand and appreciate these magnificent creatures, though. I am always in awe at how incredibly smart squirrels are and how their personalities are all so unique.

I found a teeny baby CA ground squirrel on my home from work about a year ago. No teeth, just hobbled because she was so little. I scooped in my helmet as she was using a busy asphalt road as cover and it worried me. Went back when she was safe in my house but no sign of momma. But today, I have a fiesty, funny, loving, cuddly, and sometimes lol destructive, ground squirrel that shares my room with me, and she brightens my world. Such wonderful animals.

Same here - with leftover veggie peels and grapes and other scraps. Lately, one squirrel has been leaving just one big tree nut on the cushion of our outdoor bench by the house where we typically sit and watch all the wildlife. Are squirrels gifters? Because it seems intentional. We have actually seen the squirrel jump up, drop it off and then leave.

A few years ago when I was frequently in the woods or even squirrel hunting I learned to mimic squirrel chirps barks and growls and coupled with holding my arm up, forearm bent, and snapping my hand back and forth got a pretty good facsimile of the tail motions of squirrels- i could get a half dozen squirels riled up, hanging from tree trunks or branches, all barking and growling at me, while I kept up pissing them off more and more- they would completely ignore each other cause they would be so angry at me and on two occasions they scared the hell out of me by suddenly charging and jumping at me screaming-- as soon as I broke character and moved or maybe lowered my arm, they'd all freeze a second, cthen haul ass back up the nearest trunk or whatever-its like they realized that hand bobbing or waving or whatever was connected to me- and they'd been so intently focused on the motion and sounds they didn't even notice the human standing right there!! Same deal with anole lizards when they head bob- start bobbing your index finger in the same motion up and down and the males will start the head bob and red throat display. If you know what i mean cool but if you don't then you just don't.

Feeding squirrels 1 year started with unsalted peanuts & hazelnuts. Now i give them walnuts, almonds & the favorite of all pecan. Green grapes & apple pieces. Squirrel nerds. 😂 I am only here because I found a dead squirrel outside of my door. No signs of attack, just dead. I think my roommate is poisoning them because we have so many acorn trees in the yard, and he’s trying to garden. I asked him about this because I have pets. I don’t want them running around in a yard full of poison. He never answered my question, which I sent by text. Moving out ASAP.

we call all squirrels Petey, and we always make it a point to hand them a snack, no matter where we see them! in Busch Gardens they always say dont feed the birds, but we do feed the squirrels. they depend on the food the people drop, and the park does not feed them. it would be different if they had trees and plants for the squirrels to eat, but they dont. in my 56 years i have not seen a mean squirrels, though i have seen greedy ones. when i am at the theme parks, i get french fries and fruits with my meals, and i get water. i wash the salt and syrups off the food and feed the squirrels, and leave them pods of water on the plants or on the trees.

Great documentary and congratulations on all the details. It saddens me that they are killing the gray squirrels, even though I understand it’s to preserve the red ones It is us humans that have taken over every piece of real estate that we could sell, or move into, and in doing so, in advertently, or intentionally, forced the animal residence out. Then we become indignant about our right to be present ?! Glad to see that the gentleman changed his mind and decided to coexist with his gray squirrel friends and his garden and not blow them Up😢!

Red squirrels seem like trouble. While the Greys do enjoy chasing each other and squabbling, when a Red showed up a few years ago, he tore the joint up, chased the Greys unmercifully, which just seemed so wrong given he was so much smaller. Also within a day of his arrival we found two holes in our screen door, something we've essentially never worried about with the Greys. My guess is that Red Squirrels are responsible for a lot more damage than Greys. That said I feel bad for the Brits losing their Red Squirrels but can't feel very good about killing the Greys as a solution!

Just found this video - LOVE IT! Now for the TLDR part: I Love Love Love those "Rats with a better outfit". I have grown up, and spent almost my entire life in a semi-urban environment (in Louisville, Kentucky USA), with grey squirrels. However - we also have a species of flying squirrel here too, although they are ver small, and nocturnal... so most people don't even know they exist here, and few indeed have ever seen one. I love to garden, and squirrels can be a most trying adversary... but, like the man said - it's about co-existence. Once you realize that a squirrel is just being a squirrel, and you stop trying to change it - you will be so much better off. A squirrel is going to do squirrely things - period. So - especially with the internet - it is extremely easy to read up on, and get an understanding of their behavior/s. Adapt accordingly. --> The best way to survive a fight..... is to never get in one. Let them be squirrels... and your life will be so much easier and less stressful. There are also Possums (another AMAZINGLY GREAT and Beneficial to humans but severely misunderstood animal - and the only native marsupial in my area) / Raccoons / Red Tailed Foxes / Brown Tailed Hawks / Grey Rabbits / Mice / MANY species of Birds / Worms / Insects / Spiders / Beetles - one of the things that are truly a pest and worthy of warfare are the Japanese Beetles which can and do often devastate entire areas of my gardens (and the Emerald Ash Borers) / Wasps / Honey Bees / Carpenter Bees / Hornets / Cicadas (the years they emerge) / Butterflies / Moths - including Humming Bird Moths (another of my all time favorite visitors, I even grow Moon Flowers every year just to attract them) - all of these are in my yard throughout the year. Anyway - the point is - do a little research and know what is sharing your habitat with you - it will make your life so much Easier / Less Stressful / and honestly Much More Interesting and Entertaining. As a parting note - and imho one of the greatest things ever --> If you eat peanut butter - you need to (and should) clean those jars out before recycling them.... and even if you don't recycle - you shouldn't let that last stuck on bit go to waste in the trash bin... that's perfectly good food! ---> Do yourself a HUGE Favor - the next time you have an empty jar, with some stuck to the sides - instead of washing it down the drain, or throwing it out - Put it - without the lid) out in your yard.... a few yards away from the house (it will possibly attract ants, and you don't want them telling every other ant that close to the house is food - trust me on that)..... put that jar out in the yard where you can see it from a window inside, and sit back and enjoy the show. --->>> Squirrels are rodents, and like mice and other rodents - peanut butter is literally a mind-bindingly irresistible treat. They are coo-coo for it! There are very very few things more sidesplittingly hilariously entertaining than watching a full grown squirrel climb all the way inside a peanut butter jar licking the stuck on banquet off the sides, especially if two discover it and end up competing for it, watching a squirrel drag a peanut butter jar as big as itself across the yard in it's mouth, especially if it's a heavy glass jar, while trying to fend off other would be squirrely thieves is (at least for me) an adventure in breathless, doubled over, pain in the sides laughter.... plus if you are close enough to see it - how many people can say they have ever seen a squirrel's tongue?!?!?! It is HYSTERICAL!!!

@@danielauster3320 Well yeah, pretty much like a lot of things. That old saying, A little work will go a long way towards keeping the squirrels from making you nuts. A bb gun too if you're a halfway good shot, but then you're left with the task of either cleaning up or eating a dead rodent or having the stench of rotting carcasses waft through your yard for the next few days.

I started feeding them to keep them off my bird feeder. 1has scars all over her body and missing left front leg that hampers her climbing .I felt for her as a real trooper as she chases the other squirrels and eats out of my hand. Her name is Lucky. I also have chipmunks eating out of my hand andboth cometo my window andbang their bodies against it for my attention. my large cat knows they are friends and does not chase them but watches them the chipmunks and birds and they walk within a couple of feet with little fear .I have seen 15 species of birds . At the foot of a mountain i also have black bears and raccoons , skunks ,possums and deer that come on my back porch looking for leftovers. and my hippie cat sit and watches all of them come and go on HIS turf.Being part ferrel and possibly born in wild he is simply amazing especially when he stands his ground within 4 feet oh his throne.Only problem is coyotes and fisher cats.Feeder comes in at sunset to avoid bears. I couldnt omit these critters even tho were talkin bout squirrels when i feel all are intermingled .

That guy in that garden whining about the squirrels there is exactly why I hate humans. The squirrels were there before his annoying butt and yet he feels he is king of the world and animals need to give way for him. I love all animals and thankfully when the human pest is gone animals will still be here long after.

If squirrels are bothering your garden then just set up a feeder on the outside of your gardens. Multiple. They really are wonderful little creatures you just need to learn how to co exist. If you always offer black sunflower seeds in bird feeders they will never touch your garden. And if they do eat some of your garden still, then offer them some food scrapes or damaged vegetables. It’s not just your home, they’ve lived in that area a lot longer then you have. Compromise

No squirrels in Australia. The zoo in Perth had Indian squirrels running around in and outside the zoo, but it seems that they got rid of them all. They worry about squirrels being pests to the agricultural/horticulture industries. btw I notice our pet guinea pigs won't go into open spaces and move under cover all the time when outside.
