More and more I've come to admire Andre's "Everyman" F-150. Not too basic, not too decked out. And it can really go. Sir, I wouldn't change a thing. Even those standard wheels are part of the truck's considerable appeal. Great, great choice.

I'd put a bigger cooling system in it like the Tundra has. That is really my only gripe with the Ecoboost is that, when pushed hard, they get hot. Intercooler and radiator upgrades are needed if you tow in the Rockies year round as shown in the video where they got Andre's powerboost to hit derate mode due to the coolant temps. My 2014 F150 Ecoboost hit limp mode the first time I ever towed my 5500 lb travel trailer coming back from a trip in Idaho on a 100F day. I quickly learned that if its over 85F and I was towing at high elevation I would have to do a tap dance on climbs to keep it cool. Now I am running a Mishimoto radiator, CVF intercooler and a Setrab oil cooler and it seems to be ok, but I bet I could still get it hot if I were in really rough conditions.

Would have been much closer I think, unless ram is doing something to make the engine run better at elevation and able to keep it from losing as much power. If its load based tuning like Ford uses then its possible it doesn't run at maximum power potential at sea level and then they allow it to at elevation. My Ecoboost almost never fully opens its throttle body all the way because the engine is not actually ever making its maximum possible power. It could make 450+ hp but ford limits it to 365 in the tuning, so it keep the throttle closed up to limit how much air the turbos stuff in.

It's all fun and games until the manufacturers think this stuff is important to their buyers and we get more and more expensive trucks because companies are trying to keep up in the quarter mile. Me? Give me a truck that pulls my trailer up a hill without having to join the line of Big Rigs with their 4-ways on, make it so it doesn't break, and price it so I don't have to get a second mortgage to pay for it. If somebody else's truck is faster? Well, I stopped caring about that in high school.

TRX would win, I am almost certain of it. Yes the TRX is a LOT heaver than the SRT-10 but it has WAY more power and far superior transmission. The old SRT-10 could only be had with a 6-Speed manual which even the best drivers aren't going to be able to shift fast enough to keep up with a modern automatic or a clunky old 4-Speed auto.

I'm still impressed with Andre's hybrid F-150. It did surprisingly well against the TRX. The Tundra seems to come across as being dialed back. I wonder if Toyota has it tuned that way for long term reliability?
@ZealofSparta
@ZealofSparta 2 жыл бұрын
I think Toyota know the people that will buy a Tundra will already do so and dialing it back just slightly to make it last much longer is a good thing to retain those customers. It is still plenty of power for the job unlike the old 4.0 in the 4Runner and should do the deed for years to come.
@MrJcjet
@MrJcjet 2 жыл бұрын
Same engine in the LC300 is about 25hp more. That's not a lot. But there are for sure different tunes. The Tundra is tuned for 87 octane. So it's a little milder. But the tundra turbo 6 is totally different from the Ford in design. Ford is a high revving short stroke wide bore engine. The Toyota is a narrow bore long stroke low revving engine. I don't think the tundra will ever end up being a race car type experience. It's just not an engine that is built to race. It's built to produce power at low rpms. So it wouldn't be a good engine in a sports car like Ford uses the same 3.5 EB engine for.

Ford put pretty large turbos on the 2018+ 3.5L Ecoboost, to the point that they can maintain the full factory HP right up to 11,000+ feet if they wanted. My guess is that truck is making all of the 430hp its rated for. The Ram on the other hand is supercharged. The supercharged motor will lose power with altitude just like a NA motor since the blower speed is always relative to the crank speed. The Ram was down like 15-17% on power here, putting it in the 585-600 hp range. While still more than the Powerboost, it also weights 1000 lbs more and has 35's to spool up.
@Jay-me7gw
@Jay-me7gw 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the Tundra is dialed back. Its a HEAVY truck. 5600 lbs for a non-hybrid mid-level trim is considerably higher than an F150 or Silverado. That Tundra weighs about the same as Andre's powerboost and has 40 less hp and doesn't get the instant torque off the line from the electric motor. That should have been an easy win for the Powerboost on paper and it kinda was. The Ram 1500(not TRX) was kind of a ringer. It was faster than it should have been i think

@MrJcjet
@MrJcjet 2 жыл бұрын
I think you'd need to go back to the 07 era Tundras that came in single cab short bed with a supercharger. They would run 4.4 second 0-60 according to motortrend tests. TRX is still faster. But that's probably the quickest Tundra ever.
@LionRunner
@LionRunner 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJcjet Wow, that is very impressive. TRD supercharger is exact same as Magnuson? (is it the same thing?)
@MrJcjet
@MrJcjet 2 жыл бұрын
@@LionRunner Basically the same thing. The tune was different when Toyota was doing it. The Magnusson tune is 550hp now, I think it was only 505hp when Toyota was selling them. I think the actual physical parts are the same though. Keep in mind though that that was also a single cab short bed 2wd truck that Toyota doesn't sell anymore. I've actually never seen one in person. I don't think they sold more than a handful. The TRX is a crew cab 4x4 that sells pretty well. So I'm not sure it's really a fair comparison. Anyway - I think that was the fastest Tundra ever. It just wasn't a very good truck for anything else, and it wasn't a very good sport car either. So pretty useless other than some quick 0-60 times.
@LionRunner
@LionRunner 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJcjet I bet its a fun truck with 505 stock or 550 those who fixed after market. With the new twin turbo hybrid I'm not sure if owners can fix supercharger any more since that electric motor is sandwiched to the transmission. Its always nice to have some good power while keeping the reliability. I'm also curious to see (if by any chance) hybrid battery has 0% charge how it will impact since gas motor is now not directly connected.
@MrJcjet
@MrJcjet 2 жыл бұрын
@@LionRunner I think the only aftermarket options will be tunes for this engine. It's too complex and uses custom in-house turbo units manufactured by Toyota. The tuners think 650hp is about the limit for the engine tunes. But I'd guess we won't see much more than 500ish hp from the engine because of the internal design. It'll never be a race truck. Just a good towing and quiet highway cruiser.
