This edible berry is very ubiquitous in many areas. Even so, many people don't realize it's edible. It remains edible even into mid Winter.(Smilax rotundifolia) www.eattheplanet.org

The greenbrier is an all season plant as well. The berries in the late fall/winter are edible as you said. The soft shoots in the spring and summer are edible raw or cooked, and the tubar is loaded with starch, cook like a baked potato.

Got a mess of it in my side yard. Just harvested some berries, blanched them, de-seededm then cooked the skins in salted honey with a little water. Let thicken and spread on some toast. Not bad!

Can we propagate the greenbriar smilax rotundifolia via stem cuttings?
@EatThePlanet5 жыл бұрын
Good question, I would guess you could, especially from the main stem tip as opposed to lateral buds. I have not tried it though.

@@EatThePlanet I am trying to propagate it by cuttings of the stems. I have planted approx 475 cuttings so far. Different time of the cuttings different seasons, different places. I have read somewhere that was done such a test and 55% success rate. Cuttings which i planted november i see that are wilted but when i pull the up from the soil the bottom part which was in the soil is steel green and fresh.

@@LORDVADER357 hopefully you get a decent success rate. That's interesting stuff. Keep me updated if you don't mind

I love greenbriar shoots, but didn't know the berries were edible. Where did you learn about it?

I use this website pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Smilax+rotundifolia its a huge database, but not so user friendly unless you're looking for something specific. 2 things clued me in to the fact that greenbrier berries are edible. Typically this website will just tell you they are but they often are missing information for certain minor details like that for a specific species. pfaf doesn't say greenbrier berries are edible but they claim no hazards associated with the plant at all and other species of the same genus do claim edible berries such as pfaf.org/user/plant.aspx?latinname=Smilax+bona-nox . I didn't see any known hazards at all for any plants in this genus. Also I have been eating the berries for a few years with no negative side effects at all.

@Eat The Planet to me thats Not a very convincing way to find an edible plant. maybe you could mention that next time. i find pfaf to be not very reliable. i once found it listing Hydrangea leaves as edible, but when i checked the source it was a book that was noted "book of dubious information" . idk as much as i would like to eat stuff i try to rely on citings of indiginous or traditional uses as only many generations are able to gather enough knowledge about effects of specific foods.
