With both chicks able to somewhat hold their little heads up, Brit offers bites of food to them. SR7 hatched May 1st at 6:50 pm and SR8 hatched May 2nd at 10:58 am. Both are doing nicely gaining strength as the day progressed. Brit is a first time mom and she learned quickly during her first day as a mom eagle. That is evident from this last feeding of the day before she tucked them in for the night. And the chicks are learning too and beginning to understand that beak coming at them offers food.
Here is a quote from JudyB, Hancock Wildlife admin, describing the day's events. "The little ones are very cute, and Mom Brit has actually figured out how to try to offer food to the older chick, who is trying to stay upright long enough to grab it - fun to watch her instincts kick in since she was first grabbing a bit of food, looking at the chick, looking around - and then eating the little bite. It looked to me as if she knew she should be doing something with the food and the peeping chick, but wasn't quite sure what; happily the chick did know and was trying to peck at her beak, and eventually it worked."
Thank you, Hancock Wildlife Foundation for allowing us the privilege to follow Brit and Rey throughout their nesting season this year. Join us as we follow this magnificent eagle pair this year.
