I'd also like to add, when choosing the capacity of your raft I'd add plus 2 or more depending on vessel, crew and passengers: for example you carry 6 people aboard get a raft that holds 8 or 12

The painter is NEVER tied off indirectly to the vessel, it is tied to hydro release with weak link. This will assure the raft will automatically deploy and not be draged to the bottom with the vessel.

Quite famously, my good friend, the utility of a life raft will increase the further _away_ from the beach you are. Whether that applies in every direction, I'm not sure. But the usefulness of any type of raft on solid land seems rather suspicious to me, at first glance. But I try to keep an open mind. :-)

There is a gadget called "Quench" that turns seawater into drinking water and there are things like lasers that people have used improperly to bother pilots which is against the law but if you see a helicopter looking for you, a laser goes all the way into the sky. There are also alarms and things like Apple Watches. I watched a video of a pilot who crashed his small plane into the ocean but he had a cell phone and called for help.
@wishingb58592 жыл бұрын
I would think multiple alarms and GPS gadgets might be good. They are small but some of them will put out an alarm for 2 hours which could help if something comes nearby after you are weak.

@SDeww7 жыл бұрын
misterfunnybones "The captain goes down with the ship." maybe when in the navy, but it is a misconception that a captain should go down with hes ship. A captain should be the last person leaving hes ship, when he is a professional and not a amature captain!. like for example in italy with that cruiseship the costa concordia, the captain was one of the first people to leave hes ship, 23 people died the captain was arrested for causing deaths by being reckless, and he was charged with leaving hes ship early, cause he wanted to drive the ship passed a village to show off, it struck a rock at 21:45 he left hes ship at 23:30, whilst the last liferaft left at 03:00. he got sentenced to 16 years prison.. the misconception comes from brave Navy captains that had their sinks sunk and would not leave befor the last of their crew was off/ in safety, and when a ship sinks it 80% of the time sinks fast and thus if your the last one left onboard looking for your crew, you will go down with the ship!. its not and never has been about in essence commiting suicide, either the captain was already dead when the ship sunk, and thus taking him with it, or a captain wanting to make sure all hes crew was safe, and off the boat, and than going under, only in hollywood movies would a captain go down with hes ship for honour (with one exception the japanse).

I have thought of ideas that would help, taking pontoons that hook onto the outside of the boat to keep it afloat, stopping sining, so people can at least stand on deck without it sinking, and what about making a pop up giant round metallic piece to put out aside where they are to reflect a large amount of light causing them to be seen. I have not seen any studies done on what reflective materials can be seen from the air, or what materials reflect light the best,xbut a study needs to be done. Use the best reflective materials to make a giant round flat piece, about the size and look of the top of a trampoline, but the center be of reflective material, and made the item something that can be fixed Ted when not in use, and piece it together in an emergency. Ultimately a water proof radio to call out with is best, too bad that is not in the emergency life raft!!!! That and a water desalinization item to make clean water.
@kd5you15 жыл бұрын
i thought about that too, but the pontoons would have to be excessively large to be effective at keeping the boat afloat. You can always add a waterproof radio to the lifeboat or make a ditch bag that contains the radio and enough supplies to last a week.

A quick question: the raft is attached by default to the vessel with a painter to avoid drifting the raft away from the vessel while engaging. But if the vessel is sinking, it'll pull the raft with it under the water. Is there a place to untie the raft from the vessel, or is it somehow automatic? Just wondering...
@moteroargentino79443 жыл бұрын
The raft is attached to the deck solely to activate the inflation system, not to prevent drifting. The way it works is if you launch it by hand, you can pull to release the gas manually. If the ship goes down too quickly and you don't have time to launch it, the hidrostatic release unit will automatically do it at a certain depth. Once released, the raft will float and pull the string, triggering the inflation which will increase the buoyancy and the tension will break a weak link set for this purpose, freeing the raft from the vessel and ascending to the surface.
