@Roytulin
@Roytulin 3 жыл бұрын
Actually no. The ground escape slides function as life rafts when ditched. It is not designed for rough sea conitions, but the airframe (and the slide) will not have survived if the sea was not calm. The probability of an orgnaised evacuation after ditching is low in commercial aeroplanes, as they are not built to withstand water impact in non-perfect sea conditions, and will likely roll and yaw fairly violently and disintegrate, which is the reason seat cushions and a variety of containers on board float and are fire resistant. For various reasons, the escape slides generally do not carry survival supplies. The reasons include fire risk, impact puncture risk, supplies likely available either from the intact cabin or containers come loose from the wreckage, and expected quick rescue due to variety of locator and tracking beacons and likely airborne response. This all comes down to what is the limiting factor for survival in an accident and the expected mode of failure, which are very different between aeroplanes and ships.

@@USSAnimeNCC- Not really a nightmare, safety features are designed around what limits survival. In air accidents this is the landing, and so the focus is to make you survive the landing. In ships, I believe (I am not certain) this is the evacuation and the lifeboat ride, and so lifeboats are well stocked and crew organisation training is emphasised. As for what Tony is saying it doesn’t make sense to me either so I don’t know.

It's worth mentioning that needing to abandon the ship is EXTREMELY rare in the passenger cruise industry. Emergencies of any kind are rare, and almost never mean the ship, itself is disabled or sinking. Even if there is a reason to leave the ship there will be plenty of time and no reason to panic. The crew is well-trained and it will be orderly and well-organized. And if you study history, even a ship SINKING doesn't usually happen quickly. Plenty of ships in naval battles get completely disabled, even destroyed, but stay afloat or take hours or even days to sink. As someone who worked in the cruise industry, received extensive emergency training, and was in charge of a muster station (the FIRST place you go if there's an emergency) and a lifeboat, this video was solid and spot-on. I enjoyed watching it.

If anyone is interested, the cat's eye reflector is what's called a retro reflector. You've seen them on road signs and car tail lights. Three flat planes intersecting at eight angles like that will ALWAYS send any light that hits them back on a parallel path. You'll notice that naval buoys all have one on top. They're not shiny because they don't need to be, but because of those reflectors, those tiny buoys have huge radar signatures. They show up like lighthouses on radar screens even though they might be barely visible from the bridge of a ship. A channel called Technology Connections has a good video about them if you're interested.

Believe me when I say hypothermia comes on quickly and being at sea in a lifeboat is still very precarious. I hope no one has to ever face this situation but if you do pay attention to the ship’s safety policy and know where the lifeboats are and how to deploy them. It’s just like airlines and knowing what to do in an emergency. Safe travels everyone.

Rough seas can make tethering boats together very dangerous. The ropes can actually pull the cleats off the lifeboats leaving a potentially large hole in the side of the lifeboat. One of these with 40+ people is quite heavy and 2 tethered together will create huge dynamic forces....the sailors operating them will try and keep th3 other lifeboats in sight but radar can be used to locate boats

Getting launched from a lifeboat is pretty scary when you hear the release mechanisme going off and then you feel like your in the air for 4 to 5 seconds that is something you do not want to experince when you must use it.
@foty8679
@foty8679 3 жыл бұрын
You wont fall 4 or 5 seconds though. More like 1 second, it may feel longer. They tend to place life boats quite low. Water is quite hard then you hit it, if you travel 4 or 5 seconds you would fall like 40 meters which would not be something that feels not "correct" it would be very painfull and people would propably brake bones.
@HDrobveelben
@HDrobveelben 3 жыл бұрын
@@foty8679 I think I made it very clear it is the feeling of being in the air for 4 or 5 seconds not the real amount of being in the air which would be closer to 1 or 2 seconds but being inside a fallboat can give you a warped sense of time.

This was a very interesting video, as usual. One question though. Do you know what the penalties are for companies trying to save cash and not properly equip the life boats as mandated by law? I have a feeling there's quite a few companies who would cheap out on this if they think they can get away with it. Maybe my perspective is skewed negatively based on US companies basically being immune to any real penalties.

@Chiao2011
@Chiao2011 3 жыл бұрын
There is a policing system called Port State Control, in which nations have the authority to inspect all foreign merchant vessels entering their territorial waters and check if they are compliant with relevant regulations. In a single PSC inspection, the most severe consequence for a foreign vessel failing to comply with all the rules applicable to her is a detention. You're not allowed to sail until you rectify all the deficiencies found during this inspection. You'll start burning cash if you don't solve this situation quick and that itself is quite a heavy punishment. All the unsatisfying result from the inspections will go into public records. If you have a long rap sheet, you'll get more of this inspection than others. And also, if a vessel fails constantly on these PSC inspections, she might end up being rejected by the class society, which works as a notary who certifies the condition of vessels. Without their certification, a vessel won't be able to do international trades anymore. Side note: US is not immune to this system and so are ships flying US flags. In fact, USCG is considered one of the leading agencies in the business.

I learned from another maritime channel (Chief Makoi) that not every ship gets inspected due to manpower limitations but if port authorities come aboard and something isn't up to code, the ship isn't going anywhere until it's fixed and stiff penalties will probably be applied. This would be especially true for safety/survival equipment (likely to always be checked during an inspection) and I don't think many companies would take that risk.

The one SAR case I actually went on was a disabled vsl at Frank’s Tract (a common enough event). There were already other vsls on scene rending aid. Tug (the coxswain) tells us all to keep a sharp eye out, but there were a bunch of vsls off to our left and they kept my interest, not even sure why since they were working, when I saw a red flare fly off into the sky… I may not have been terribly Coastie about HOW I called it out (ehem, first case right) but I got Tug’s attention alright, I even was able to tell him it was the middle boat (from our perspective). Ya, they work. Really well.

Great video, so well presented and easy to follow. Got to Cox the lifeboat on my sea survival course many moons ago, all I can remember though is not to wrap the cord that releases it around your hand when you pull it (unless you want no fingers) and that it stank of diesel fumes 🤢. Thankfully I only did a year working at sea before moving to aviation. Do lifeboats not have the trusty Reverse Osmosis Pump like the life rafts? Constantly pumping away on the ROP was always taught as the thing you got the most shocked survivor to do to keep them occupied.
