The ultimate fear… for a studio is to be stuck in the niche market of survival horror. Don’t worry! With these helpful tips, any game company big or small can create a smash hit survival horror game with zero effort. I hear there is no competition for zombie games.
No honest thoughts yet as I am out of energy just trying to get this video out. I’ll update my honest thoughts later. Until then, watch out for jump scares.

I want an "open" survival horror game where the road out of the scary town is completely unobstructed and you can totally leave any time you want, you're just never explicitly told you can leave. You even get a special ending if you leave, "Congratulations, you did the sensible thing!"

While I like how J.P. always shits on all sorts of love triangles, I think it's important to remember that the plot device _by itself_ is not necessarily bad. Some of the greatest pieces of storytelling included love triangles, most notably Star Wars and don't tell me it wasn't lots of fun to listen to Luke and Han's constant bickering slowly transforming into a genuine friendship in spite of competing over the same woman. Jealousy is a natural human emotion and emotions are something that should be explored in art. The problem with this device is that it's hardly ever used to its full potential. More often than not we have a woman two guys lose their minds for, even though there's nothing suggesting that she actually possess any traits that would make her in any way attractive. The woman will also almost never make up her mind, instead relying on plot convenience to get rid of the guy not favored by the fandom (granted, Star Wars is guilty of that true, by asspulling the Leia's your sister reveal) so it doesn't look like she is being a bitch by rejecting a guy-Lord knows only the most despicable cunts out there ever do that. I think that Avatar did it best while also not overplaying it, as attested by the sharp divide between the fans as to whether Aang or Zuko should win over Katara in the end. Both these characters had something to go for, something that would make the audiences root for them and Katara herself was a very well fleshed out figure rather than just a pretty picture. So yeah, don't take J.P.'s rants too seriously. Two people competing over a single individual is something that happens in real life all the time and thus should be reflected in fiction. Just when you do, make sure you avoid the most glaring clichés. The best way to do it would be to just first create your characters and only _then_ start thinking which of them should be hooked up with which, based on their respective personalities. One of the most interesting thought experiments I've ever tried when thinking of a story was just to sort of create the basic elements and then let your imagination flow and see what would happen if, say, these two seemingly unrelated characters stumbled across one another at some point. Sometimes just letting your intuition take the reign is the best indicator of what your readers would enjoy as well.

Setting: EA headquarters Plot: you are a developer who was kidnapped by the corporation after it recently merged with Activision. The corporate staff tells you to create a game but they constantly change it to generate more money. When at the end of a 40 day crunch developing the game they realise you won't turn profit equal to 1000x the development costs, they send you to the dungeons where you will be hunted by the other studios which were left to die.

Listen, J.P, you clearly don't understand zombies. Zombies are the most powerful creature ever created. They have every single advantage in the book. Slow-moving, braindead, rotting bodies with minimal cognitive function, nonexistent communication amongst its fellow species members, and a reproduction method that requires them to go up against an apex predator capable of using metal weaponry, armor, and firearms. And let's face it - the first places to be overrun are going to be locations where lots of armed police officers and military members patrol. I mean, how the hell is anyone supposed to kill a zombie, let alone someone with the latest in long-range firearm technology combined with disciplined military training and the advantage of having a slow-moving predictable target? It's only _natural_ that sewers would be large enough to contain hordes of living creatures and plenty of weapons and ammunition - just ask anyone who lives in a city, there's practically an entire city under every city. Plus, of _course_ mental hospitals are going to be one of the first places to go. They only have tough steel bars to keep people from breaking out the windows and escaping - how's that supposed to stop the shambling corpse of someone who needed a pair of scissors to open a bag of potato chips in life? That's why they have to constantly -buff- add weaknesses to zombies like spitting acid, bulging muscles the size of the Hulk, super speed, or even invisibility. I mean, those are totally unique abilities and haven't been done before by other monsters, demons, robots, or alien lifeforms.

Undertale's musical appreciation on KZfaq was completely warranted though. That stuff was great!

@yarpen26 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, slasher movies _are_ part of the horror genre. Just because they tend to suck does not make them any less horrorish. What defines a horror story in general is that it's at the very least supposed to rely on the audiences feeling a single extreme emotion all the way through, namely suspense. In a way they share this with comedies which in turn rely on humor. In both these instances the plot is of somewhat secondary importance: as long as the audiences experience lots of the given emotion, it can be considered a success. Now, whether is actually _does_ happen is another story altogether. And so, the likes of Friday the 13th may be shit (and I mean _all_ of these movies, including the original) that don't even hold a candle to Carpenter's The Thing but they are still horror movies nonetheless.

One of the best jump scares I ever ran across was in the gamecube remake of the first Resident Evil. Fairly early on you run across a hallway right before a safe room. As you described, the room goes eerily quiet, and the camera focuses on the windows, nakedly telegraphing that zombies absolutely would be coming through that window. I stepped into the room prepared for what was to come, and nothing happened. I walked through, saved my progress, and went on about my merry way. The game was structured such that you visited that safe room repeatedly, as there were several things that had to happen in the area. Each time, the jump scare was telegraphed, and each time nothing happened, until I'd grown so complacent that I didn't even notice the camera angle/background noise, as that was just an empty hallway. That was when the zombies finally came through the window; scared the shit out of me.

The thing about fanfiction is that it isn't a genre in its own right. The things that are wrong with fanfiction are mostly just things that are wrong with unskilled writing; get a good author involved who knows their shit and these things disappear. Granted, it is a thing with its own quirks to some extent, so maybe an episode on fanfiction could work, but most of the things that _seem_ like quirks of fanfiction would just show up in other self-published amateur writing if you came across it in the first place.

I'm not gonna lie: the nursery rhymes sang in a monotone voice with children whispering in the background never fails to send chills down my spine, especially if the setting is an abandoned hospital, asylum, or orphanage. There's just something extra gut-wrenching when the previous victims of an entity are children.

Buuuuuut RE2 explains why the RPD was full with weird traps and statues and it also explains why the police force failed. The Chief Brian Irons was in league with Umbrella and installed the puzzles during a renovation so that no one could find the entrance to the Umbrella Lab and he was also giving his Police Officers, who all trusted him, false orders and disorganised them, he even killed some of them himself. It's all in the notes and files you find. But hey that would be another good terrible writing advice, everyone just loves to leave helpful notes and files around

Thank god James Cameron broke away from the stepping-stone sequel to make it so the 3rd installment can be ignored all together (T2, Aliens). Same with Visceral (Dead Space 2) before EA destroyed their freedom and eventually them all together. But I will hold hope for BioWare, no matter how hard the CDPROBSIDIAN cultists shame me for believing.

No, don't you get it? The bad voice acting makes the survival horror games good because bad quality is funny, according to everyone who likes the Resident Evil games. Who cares if it means that the games have utterly failed at their designed goal of being quality atmospheric horror, and have instead become sources of comedy? You can't criticize it because some people enjoy poor voice acting, and if you point out the terrible plots and voice acting then you're just a no fun wet blanket, games shouldn't endeavor to have well thought out plots! As long as someone enjoys the game then it is free of criticism for utterly failing to be what it was trying to be. Anyway, thanks for restraining yourself and not putting in any jumpscares in the video.

Dang. Of course you can point out a terrible plot if a game tries to make storytelling its main attrraction. The main point of a game is to be fun and memorable (and be a game but people will argue with that idea more often nowadays), whether it be found in the terrible story elements or the game play alone. Now, if you are trying to give a game a deep storyline over good gameplay, there will usually be a high chance of low replay-ability. Plus it's fine to point out terrible voice acting. Why do you think there is a classic mode to Freedom Planet?
@Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 6 жыл бұрын
I would argue that Resident Evil games had neither good storyline nor good gameplay given the use of tank controls, but that's very much opinions, and a bit of hyperbole. I just am personally frustrated when I cannot for the life of me understand the appeal of, say, Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid, which so very clearly fail to be what they set out to be, but everyone and their dog it seems enjoys them in spite of, no, because of those very reasons that make them intolerable to me. If you're going to insert a plot into your game like Resident Evil does, and have a complex cast of characters and motivations, then by god I say you open yourself up to criticism over your story and voice acting. Some people might enjoy the bad voice acting and insane story, but I don't believe that makes it free from criticism regarding its success at being what it claims to be: a horror game. If it just wanted to be solely about the gameplay, it could have been 100% gameplay without plot.

XFlo Yeah, shitty, sluggish, stiff camera and controls terrify me. In the end what's scary about going into a room where there's sum zombie that just walks up to you and hits you till dead. The layout isn't tense or scary, it's sluggish. When it's not doing that, it's: "Oh no, big scary monstur is trying to kill me!!!" System Shock is a better SH game (not 1 tho. That one sucked). The player is not some helpless bitch, or a Demigod (unless you u really used psionic builds and exploits out the ass). The horror isn't the monsters it's the fact that despite your best efforts, you are woefully under equipped to deal with this threat. Your priority is to survive until you can finally face your fears and cast them down into the dirt. RE just feels like shit. The camera angles make aiming and movement a pain, the shooting is stiff, it's just awkward. I don't feel like I'm challenging these monsters at my best, I feel like the game itself is fighting me. RE4 was kinda better but even then I wasn't really scared. You let my guy do all the Kung Fu and Judo, while letting me shoot thrown boards out of midair? We sure this isn't just a Matrix simulator?

muddyviolet Gaming while wont I could take a crack at it. Step one you have to decide on what type of müder to focus. Is it the type a where the clues are so obvious that anyone paying attention has it solved so fast that you wonder if everyone in the story has brain damage. Or type b. Where the clues are something that the reader couldn’t have known even if he reread the book since you pulled something out of your ass, Now all you need is to find out where the muder victim is. In the love triangle since the victim is always in some sort of love triangle we have done our job and can go home.
