Advice from experience: put the candle in a zip baggie. In a hot car or having the can in the summer sun too long and the wax can melt and make a mess of everything inside. Even if deformed in the bag, the wax and wick are still very useful.

A good message in this video: have something. Too many people get stuck on "as soon as I have enough money to get everything I want" rather than starting with the basics. Having a small kit won't prepare you for everything, but having nothing prepares you for nothing.

In the U.S. go to a paint store (not Home Depot or Lowe's) to get a NEW unused 1 quart or 1 Gallon METAL paint can. They are both steel, un-lined, and the gallon size has a wire bail. Both seal up nicely. I don't know about European paint cans, but they would be 1 L. and 4 or 5 L. Johann

You put together a pretty good kit, Lilly. I've been making my own survival kits for several years, and you have most of the basics covered. May I suggest: punch a couple of small holes at the top of the can to facilitate making the 'bail' handle you spoke of. You can cover them with duct tape to maintain waterproofness. Also, instead of sugar packets, I carry several large-diamter drinking straws, cut to a length to fit, filled with honey and sealed at the ends. Honey is easier for your body to use, has healthy enzymes, and is a natural (mild) anti-biotic which can be used to treat small wounds. And honey doesn't go bad (although it will crystalize when chilled...but it can be melted again).
@hfortenberry
@hfortenberry 4 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion about the honey but one correction, sugar does not go bad either. So sugar and honey will keep nicely.

4:00 Love your channel, Lily, and the experiences you share. When I was a boy (+- 55 years ago) my Scoutmaster also made us carry a candle. As you say, a candle is quite bulky, so he taught us a neat trick. We learned to shave away a bit of the wax on two opposite sides of the candle, making it flatter and much thinner. Then we took a normal school ruler, wooden of course, and broke it across at the 15cm (6") mark. We then put the candle between the two ruler bits and wrapped some twine around it to hold it all together. (these days one could use duct tape). This means the candle won't break, and you also get some emergency kindling. A candle is a great fire starter once you have a small weak flame in your tinder, and it won't go out easily. Before departing on any outing or camp, your candle was inspected carefully for safety reasons. I hope you find this interesting.
@BanZandar
@BanZandar 7 жыл бұрын
I would suggest adding a Space Blanket for emergency shelter or thermal covering to keep warm in cooler weather. And a Bandana which can be used to no only cover you head but can also be used as a sling, bandage, water filter, ect. It's much like a Shemagh but smaller in size making it easy to pack. and if you can add some Ziplock bags as well. Makes it easy to keep everything in the kit together when you are using the tin to cook or boil water for drinking. You should also add some Aluminum foil as a way to gather water and maybe even cook with as a fire shield.
@DreadnoughtAdventure
@DreadnoughtAdventure 7 жыл бұрын
A ziplock bag can also be water-purification with enough sunlight, or just keeping the water after it's been boiled in the can.
@BanZandar
@BanZandar 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. I normally don't add all those extra ideas as you can do many things with ziplock bags. I like to leave it up to the imagination of the user. I also add Bailing Wire to kits as there are sometimes when you need a heavier wire. Makes it so I don't have to waste Brass/copper wire when I'm making Snares.
@wickedmuffin76
@wickedmuffin76 7 жыл бұрын
I was also going to comment on adding some kind of bag to contain the kit when the can is in use for something else. Also adds water resistance and possibly a dry/clean surface to set thing down on. That always baffles me about those "survival in a water bottle" kits, what do you do if you need the bottle?
@L3monsta
@L3monsta 7 жыл бұрын
You can also use ziplock bags to start fires if you really need
@BanZandar
@BanZandar 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can also use a bag to start a fire by first filling it with water and using it like a magnifying glass. And those survival kit in a bottle should be made out of metal so you can boil water with it.
@gregsummers7350

Good simple ideas. May I suggest a neck cord for the whistle and fire steel. Put cooking oil on metal items to prevent rusting and wrap with clip wrap. When all the items are in the can pour in meal extender (rice / buckwheat / pasta) to fill in all the voids with a zip lock bag on top to hold the meal extender. Soup stock powder / cubes help make a bush meal better. Thanks Greg.

Hi Lilly !! I was reading the comments and *Danni* mentioned about bringing a net instead of fishing line. but I think it all depends in what you're proficient with, for instance I personally don't know how to use a net efficiently enough , so I couldn't even catch a cold with it but I am ok with a fishing line , but a net can also be used for carrying stuff you gather along the way , like wild edibles , firewood ,etc...or make a small game trap. The one thing I would add to the can ,(or put the can in it ) is a lady's stoking , and here is why, it can be used as rough filter , a bag , you can pull a string from it and wrap it and tight it around your bait on the hook so it wouldn't fall apart ( especially if you have a limited supply of bait ), it's very strong you can hung stuff from it and it won't brake ( ofcource once you tight a knot with it there's no chance in hell that you be able to undo it ) , and god forbids something bad happens it can be made into a tourniquet an arm sling or to tight a splinter, but the best thing of all is.... it can be used as a sleeping hat...!!! so when you wake up in the morning probably looking more tired than when you whet to sleep your hair will loo k amazing...!!! lol... great video as allways !!!

Hey Lily, thanks for the video. I want to add that there is a product called "multi-purposes bracelet" which often has a small compass, thermometer, flint and striker, tiny compartment for fishing lines, hooks, sinkers and obviously, paracords from the bracelet. From the Largest fresh water lake(Lake Superior) in the world to the tallest cliffs in Ontario, also the oldest fossils in North America.....Stromotolites! It is my opinion that a survival kit's contents are dependant on your location. For example where I live in the British Lake District the main survival requirements are protection from rain, snow, wind chill and hypothermia. Water is plentiful and you are probably never more than a few miles from habitation. I pack a survival blanket, extra food (usually nuts and chocolate), a headlamp and a spare fleece. I also carry a whistle for signalling. For me snare wire, fishing kit and fire lighting items are useless. In other environments no doubt they prove very useful. My main rescue tool is leaving a pre planned route and time of return with someone reliable.

Great video and kit. Just a quick tip, most people use a whistle wrong...when you blow the whistle, you're supposed to plug your ears with your fingers so the loud noise does not cause your ears to ring, and reduce your ability to hear some one responding to your whistle. If you think about it, if someone can hear you a half a mile away blowing a whistle, how hard is it on your ears when they're 6 inches away from the whistle? Just a thought. Keep up the great work.

Wrapping the duct tape around the outside of the can might save space inside, as well as being aesthetically pleasing. You could also wrap your cordage around the outside. I'd also use Ziploc bags to store your first aid stuff, maybe put the dextrose in another bag. It would help to keep things organized, and protect against water damage. Is your metal container sized to match the amount of water that one of your purification tablets can treat?

As a soldier whose been shot at and seen soldiers go down thanks to bullet wounds it takes more knowledge then just what people say to fully treat a wound most people freak out and are incoherent

Neat! Now if you can have a truly wide-mouthed plastic bottle with screw-on cap (large peanut butter bottle-jar), it can truly be watertight and floatable as well. I just put all my small and dry survival gear into my smallest 3-4 quart stainless steel pressure cooker and it keeps everything bundled and dry and one package carry in the ruck.

Hey Lillly, I noticed you mentioned that the whistle you used has a pea, have you tried the FOX40 CMG or just the FOX40 pea-less whistles? I use them exclusively in my work (which requires a LOUD whistle) on a carrier flight deck, and you can not beat this type of whistle for loudness and all weather usefulness.

I suggest adding a plastic "kitchen size" trash bag and a smaller zip closing bag. These fold flat and would not take much space or weight.

I like to make a small cloth sack to contain all the items that are in the can. So when you use the can for water you have something to store the other items in.

I've read that food cans have a plastic lining that can leak BPA, especially when heated. BPA exposure is a cancer risk. Maybe one of those lil cup sized camping pots can fit in there. You could put holes into the can and turn it into a hobo stove instead.

You are one incredible woman Lilly and I thoroughly enjoy watching your vids. Excellent idea about the can, I use something similar in my vehicles using a stainless steel single walled thermous bottle. Thank you for sharing so much bushcraft and survival knowledge.
